Why Panasonic exposure so simple and limited?
  • GH3, GH4 and other high end/professional Panasonic cameras has severe limitation in video exposure options and features. Many pocket cameras and cell phones has more versatile exposure. Why Panasonic has decided to leave many basic exposure tools out of the tool box? Lets look the GH4:

-not showing basic exposure information (aperture, shutter and iso).

-no auto iso in M with EV comp although it has a dedicated EV comp button. In fact I can not find any other reasonable use for that button than EV comp with auto iso in M.

-no iso limit like in photo modes.

    -AE lock button works crippled.

-full auto uses very high shutter speeds.

    -no shutter speed limit.

-all special features like long shutter speeds or slow motion works only after everything (AE+AF) is in manual.

-all Panasonic objectives has stepping aperture.

It cant be a lack of knowledge. Panasonic has limited exposure options in purpose. But why?

  • Aperture and actual ISO are not visible in any movie mode. Aperture and actual ISO are visible in photo mode, including 4K/6K photo

I hope they fix it some day.

  • With those settings...
Aperture and actual ISO are not visible in any movie mode.

I did note that AutoISO target exposure can be adjusted with Exposure Compensation and that AEL seems to hold ISO when AutoISO is engaged. IIRC, I don't think the GH4 worked that way.

Just set the GH5 to shutter priority and auto iso in video mode and see if you can see aperture value or actual iso.

  • If you would list the configuration and the steps you want me to take, I will be happy to do it and let you know what I see.

  • Does the GH5 show exposure info in video modes (shutter, aperture and iso) with new FW update?

  • @caveport - Your last two comments on this thread don't seem very useful. Why not just skip the thread?

  • Still having fun with this topic. I really like the clean display without confusing and constantly changing exposure iinformation.

  • Does the GH5 show exposure information when shooting video with 6k photo? Does the new lenses really adjust aperture smoothly?

  • @Vesku Same as GH4.... cool!

  • GH5 final FW. No exposure info in screen. Just blank shutter value and auto iso.

  • Shouldn't be too hard to implement, the values are there in the Image-app view.

The funny thing is that Panasonic has removed this info from screens for some purpose. Can someone explain what that might be? Showing too much information to user maybe? Even in top model GH5?

  • I'm using the FZ2000/2500 and the exposure info would actually be really useful in tandem with the built-in ND filters. I'm shooting shutter-priority in movie-mode with shutter set to 50 and auto ISO for documentary stuff. Seeing the aperture the camera is choosing would make it really easy to know what ND to dial in when shooting in bright conditions. I remember the DVX-100 used to flash up a warning icon when ND was needed, that would be useful too. Shouldn't be too hard to implement, the values are there in the Image-app view.

  • GH5 seems to have some clever tricks with auto iso. It can smooth exposure with variable aperture lenses.

I wonder if the auto iso can smooth also exposure changes when dialing shutter or aperture in manual mode.

  • Is there exposure values info with current GH5 FW?

  • Time to buy a Sony.......

  • Proof. No exposure info in automatic video modes in GH5.

I think that under stepless aperture they mean that change speed will be slow.

  • Panasonic says the newest lenses can use almost stepless aperture in video. Can someone test with new 12-60mm or other newest lens? The coming 100-300mm II will also use "almost stepless aperture" and DUAL IS 2.

  • @thetrickster

Thanks. So no exposure values in screen when using auto exposure. I hope Panasonic makes it work with final FW. It works in 4k and 6k photo video mode. Makes no sense.

  • @Vesku - I sent you a PM earlier. :)

  • What exposure improvements GH5 has? At least auto iso in M with EV comp. Great!

How about showing exposure values? Shutter speed limit? More FN-options?

  • A logical new way to set exposure for video would be semi-auto exposure (AES=AE single). No brand has figured it yet.

With P, A or S the exposure would be adjusted when starting the clip and then stays unchanged. Auto exp would just give the starting point. The same is possible with AE-lock but is not so easy. It needs constant AE-lock ON/OFF toggles between clips and it is easy to forget ON for next clips.

The same semi-auto would be useful for WB too. WB adjusts in video start and then stays.

Auto focusing has already this option (AFS).

So the camera should have AFS, AES an WBS and proper menu options for that.

There should also be a possibility to program separate AE-lock, AF-lock and WB-lock to FN-buttons.

  • I must test if it has any drawbacks.

One drawback is the AF. Single AF with half shutter is not working with 4k photo. Only continuous AF or manual focus. So only option is to use back button focusing in manual focus if I need the video start with single AF.

Audio is also always 128kb lossy format.

    Always something missing.

  • How stupid of me!

I can shoot video using a 4k photo mode. It shows exposure values like photo modes and and has auto iso in M and auto iso upper limit. It makes just the same video files as normal video.

It is very easy to toggle between S, A, P and M.

I can have two different video mode instantly. One with shutter and other with video button.

I must test if it has any drawbacks.

  • Yes I agree that the wide iso adjustment bar which blocks the other exposure readings and expo meter is unnecessary. Why the iso dialing not just change the iso value just like aperture or shutter speed. Everyone knows that after iso400 comes iso 640 and then iso800 etc. No need to show all the line of isos.

If there must be an iso dialing bar/list in some stylist reason it should be vertical so that it would not block other values (which are not always even showing in video).
