All the big players in the 1080 recording market will need to push 4k just like the TV makers do. That is my bet. If you build it they will come.
Of course they will. Problem is that things become more costly and complex and they are not sure if it'll pay off as customers can pass on first generation of 4K products until wide gamut 4K/60p 12bit will be available.
@RatLabProductions Cool - hopefully they'll make a reasonably priced one.
@matt_gh2 I'm with you ... hoping someone comes up with something to record from that HDMI that would cost less than the "brick" ... cool and useful as that would be, it's a CHUNK of change. Yeesh.
@rNeil Yep - maybe something pops by May.
Now on the pre-order list too via Amazon. BTW, what ever became of the 4K -> 1080P 10-bit downsample discussion?
I just tried to pre-order from Amazon.com not possible to ship to Germany :-( would also have loved to get this 4-year "drop" warranty anyone any ideas how I can get a US model to Germany?
Order from B&H, then use one of the specialist 'we ship it' companies?
Speaking of SD cards - I currently record video at 70 mb/s using the Toshiba "Exceria" cards. Very reliable and top notch cards. Much cheaper too.
Maybe they will work with GH4
Andy
B&H charges my card on date of order and not on shpping day like amazon and their warranty is at least twice as expensive as the one on amazon :-(
...until wide gamut 4K/60p 12bit will be available.
I hope I am still alive then.
At least this is the plans of Chinese major TV manufacturers for this year :-) Adding HDMI 2.0 and making all premium TVs 4K with very wide gamuts.
@Vitaliy_Kiselev
Good stuff. I've always been more interested in the evolution of bit depth and over coming banding issues. Both high resolution (4K), high bit depth (12-bit DCP in your home) and perhaps 60p (not so important for playback for me, great for recording), bring on the bandwidth and H.265 or other goodies, 14nm CPU. Watch out for the grey goo?
One of the main things the GH4 has my interest, shoot 4K to extract 2K/1080p 2x anamorphic, and I might improve my bit depth on the scale down of internal 100Mbps recording, if I do it right in AE or other.
Three GH4 cameras will be in the UK for this weekend only for the preview campaign to be held exclusively at three stores for three days at each store.
The preview starts on Thursday 13 March, Friday 14 March and Saturday 15 March, from 10-4pm at Conns Cameras, 54 Clarendon St, Dublin 2.
The previews will continue at the following stores on Friday 14 March, Saturday 15 March and Sunday 16 March 2014 from 10-4pm:
- Jessops, 129-131 Oxford Street, London, W1D 2HU
- Park Cameras, 53-54 Rathbone Place, London, W1T 1JR
Each store will have a working sample of the camera for users to try.
Hopefully, someone will come back with some footage on their own memory cards from those events.
@olli66 adorama was nice, no sales tax, no charges until day shipped and the 3 year warranty is not a bad deal at all.
Amazon now states that the release date is April 30th 2014 in the US. Mine still says that it will ship May 1st and arrive May 2nd.

I'm working around the corner from Park so will try to get down there on Friday with an SD card.

@matt_gh2 I think most of the recording formats can be output to the HDMI port to allow 10bit 4:2:2 in HD as well as 4k. For me this camera is not just about 4k, even though that's what most people are focussing on.
This is exciting and all - but now way will i preorder...gonna wait a bit till the smoke clears, I'll pick one up a few months later
I have a GH2 with the 14-140 Panasonic lens and a few full frame Nikon lenses. I'm trying to get a feel for whether my existing lenses will work well with the GH4 or whether I need to consider purchasing another lens. I realize you can always get something better for each specific situation, but for those of us without an unlimited budget, what lenses are people buying for or planning on using with the GH4 and why?
film by day GH4 by night all day
I have the 14-140 with the GH2, and almost hate it. Shot with a rented 35-100 last week, and it was such a nicer experience... it's probably next on my glass list.
@johnnymossville thanks for the tip, just placed my pre-order with adorama
now the question is which SD card(s) to buy?
regarding lenses, it´s sort of impossible to say exactly what lenses will give that little bit of extra on a camera that is not in the hands of customers yet.. I would hold off investing in lenses until actually having / liking the camera.
I sort of hate lumix glass on lumix cameras. Always look oversharpened, they can really spoil edges of stuff in the frame. If it wasn't for the pocket cinema cam I would most likely have looked to get rid of the 12-35. I might anyway as I'm planning on getting the nice sigma wide angle zoom and add a couple of speedboosters to it. (It will work much better with my set of c/y zeiss primes).
I suggest you check out topics on vintage lenses as there are many around that are insanely good for very low prices, but hold off from buying anything (specifically for the gh4) until you can actually try the stuff you already own.
