GH3 rumors topic

  • It's almost impossible to achieve critical focus on GH2 using EVF or LCD. Moire-like false color effects of the areas in focus help a bit.

Focus assist is a must for the next model.

  • I actually think that a change of focus has already taken place. Just look at the Canon and Nikon DSLR lines. They are clearly aiming at the Video Photo Journalist market with the features they've added to their top of the line DSLR's. The only issue Panny has is that they don't have a Pro DSLR camera. They most certainly can make the GH3 their Pro cam and spec it out accordingly. It still won't be a proper Video camera and thus there's really no reason not to put a ton of features into it. Some guy that does College sports or other Proper Video camera jobs isn't going to be swayed by a GH3 just cuz Panny adds a Headphone out or improves the DR etc. So IMO there's no legit reason for Panny not to go for the gusto. Even the AF100 was a different tool than the GH2. They don't have to be considered competition for the same market. They need to go in a similar direction as Canon with their C series DSLR's, but only much cheaper and they'll do great in the Mkt place.

  • If Panny could squeeze a couple more stops, offer us cine gamma knee control, improve S/N, and offer 4:2:2...

  • I hope the improve S/N - 4:2:2 would be nice

    • 18 mp
    • 1080 60p or 50p
    • more focus points improvements
    • 4:2:2 color
    • hdmi out uncompressed 4:2:2
    • sensor improvement low noise levels in higher iso
    • auto focus improvement for video
  • gimme the dr of the olympus and i'm on board ! (:

  • @klem007

IF you look at Olympus curves it looks like it is mostly software difference with G3 and GX1.

  • @Mr_Moore: Does my tripod hold it wrong too? :)

  • @svart Heh. Sorry, must have been too vague a reference.

What I meant to say was it sort of took me a few moments to get used to the EVF, too. Once I’d gotten the hang of it, though, I virtually stopped using the LCD display. So, referring to your “all i see is blurred colors” comment, I’ll say maybe you haven’t quite figured out how to position your eye against it.

  • I work fast and have twitchy eyes. I shot for years with SLRs using standard mirror VFs but this GH series EVF just isn't my thing I guess. I'd rather have a much larger LCD than any EVF at all, rather like the new BM camera. But that's just me. I do most of my GH vid stuff with external monitors anyway.

  • @svart, I'm wondering if the problems you're having with the EVF is due to the technology Panasonic uses (which is similar to DLP) where the primary colors are flipped between rapidly, which can lead to color tearing. Some people notice it more than others, and if you're eyes are "active" you will see it more too.

Hopefully panasonic uses a more standard OLED technology which offers a much more stable color image in the GH3.

For me I'd hope for: less skew, clean HDMI that can be more easily recorded, headphone jack, accessory grip that has XLR inputs and external audio controls :) why not! peaking, custom curves

oh ok fine, and cinemaDNG :)

  • @svart I hear you. I agree: (almost) nothing beats a big, hi-res LCD monitor. But if I’m in a situation where I have to choose between the GH2’s LCD and EVF, I always opt for the latter.

  • Well if one can choose freely an external monitor is better for getting the focus spot on. That is not always the case though, part of the benefit of a dslr is the light weight (possible to carry around anywhere) and there is really no reason not to have a very good LCD screen and a very good EVF on such a camera..

  • i want some nice real gh3 gear-porn pictures to drewl upon

  • Panasonic, give me line-in and AGC bypass so that I can use external recorder to capture, level and monitor the sound without syncing in post. And I'll call it quits. You don't thread on your pro market niche with extra audio features on a prosumer camera. We get the ability to have decent sound via 3rd party solution. Everybody's happy.

  • So, best still camera.

  • Aside from what other people have asked for.

I would absolutely love if the GH3 had a higher height multiaspect sensor, as tall as a APS-C sensor. This would allow 1:1 aspect ratio and full usage of the lens image circle in this aspect.

Also new aspect crops such as 5:4, 2.39:1, 1.85:1 and one last one, the usage of the whole sensor, with no cropping what so ever, vignetting be damned

Also allow multiaspect selection in video modes too.

Ex Tele modes that were perfect crops for common lens ie 2/3rds

This would turn the GH3 into a monster, heck if we could to the last 2 with the GH2 via firmware it would be monster

  • Hi!

I think GH camera it's a great camera with a very nice look but the rolling shutter is extreme. Without this problem could be really amazing camera. I also read on M43 the rumor of the global shutter but seems that's not real. I would much better dynamic range, and for that matter to dream a RAW video format or better video codec, but this would be so much! Of course, 1080 at 60p, better ISO... Like still camera needs to be very much faster.

I love my GH13. I take this opportunity to thanks Vitality Kiselev for his work!!! Was very exciting to see the progress of your hack.

Panasonic has done something great. I hope it stays that way.

Looks like the Bolex D16 will be also a excellent camera.

    Regards,

    • 10 bit 422
    • remote and mic separate inputs
    • more advance remote control (shutter speed, wb, iso, fn,...)
    • stabilized body
    • hi res lcd
    • custom ex-tele mode
  • Little previews of GH3 features:

Panasonic is the latest camera manufacturer to get in on the Wi-Fi app game — it's just launched Lumix Remote for iOS and Android. The app only works with the FX90 compact camera for now, which will need a firmware upgrade in order to talk to Lumix Remote, but once that's done you'll have a few more ways to use the camera's Wi-Fi chip. Your phone's screen can be used as both a zooming viewfinder and a shutter release, and there's a separate mode designed to help you take a self portrait.

I am 98% sure that we'll see Wi-Fi direct in GH3, also most probably we'll get USB 3.0.

  • GH3 wishful thinking: What about a different file system, something that can go over the 4gb fat crap and make spanning issues obsolete(maybe)?

  • If it's true Wi-Fi direct, then that will be awsome. That means you don't have to connect to a wireless access point to talk to the camera. Just use a compatable device with the camera then you're good to go. My big 720p display smartphone will now be of a good use.

  • @Luxis I am not sure how likely that is. I mean, even the RED scarlet just spans into 4GB files and it is using custom SSD drives. Still, I am not saying no to it if they can make it work. :)

    @Vitaliy_Kiselev Cool. :)

  • I think by the nature of technology, a CMOS sensor today can have greater dynamic range, less noise than the technology available 2 years ago. So, GH-3 with a bit more DR is expected. I like the Panasonic Engineers. They clearly like to implement some cool features. So I can imagine some new stuff. The Wi-Fi would be nice if we could use it like tethering on Can/Nikon.

Remember, The GH-3, which most likely won't be in regular people's hands until December or January. Will have a life span into 2014 or 2015. So 1080p 60p would really need to be included to be competitive over the life cycle of the GH-3.

Also, there will be more powerful processors.

My guess, like Canon raising the price on the 5D III, A GH-3 will have a higher starting price point.

Understanding the market will give better clues as to the GH-3s specs. The Olympus M43 is a mighty attractive package, lacking the super duper video ability of the GH-x. I can imagine Panny doesn't want Olympus to stay on top of the M43 market. The Gh-3 will try to surpass most of the specs of the Oly.

I wish we could have a Micro SATA connector and go right out to a SSD. In the menu you can choose ext SSD or internal SD recoding
