Canon 5D Mark III topic

"And worse, they must not show simple fact that all lines of lenses will require total change."

    I liked your interpretation.
Could you please expand on what you mean here? Lenses are too bulky and would have to shrink in size as the 5dm3 body did? Because the world of gear is diminishing, right

  • Way too little bang for too much buck. Underwhelmed. The 5DX will be considerably more megapriced with the megapixels between MkIII and 1DX price. I think we can make that conclusion before its released.

  • I have a 5D Mark II, ...I can say only BS...

  • @Bueller: Actually I got it wrong.. 51 times more powerful than the Digic 4 (apparently).

A lot more power to play with for the magic lantern guys. It's enough to replace codecs/up the rate massively, run 4:4:4, high bit depths (14-bit from RAW - greater than what you can put over HDMI if someone wanted that), or run 4K even etc. If the memory bus could handle the rates that is, and of course if they could ever get that in depth with ML. Wouldn't hold my breath on it happening, but the hardware potential is all there now.

Here's hoping at the very least Canon have put in a proper down scaling filter instead of skipping.

It's also nice to have a greater than S35 sensor.. all those still manual lenses can be used to their full potential and provide their full FOV.

I haven't seen anything on the Canon site about HDMI, just others saying there's none.

  • Without HDMI available, recording time is limited to 29' 59''. Its not an live recordings option also...

  • Not bad, Intra frame ;-) No HDMI out bit of a bomb. Still its a good camera/HDSLR at full frame. I'll probably get one!

  • No HDMI output. Definitely it's no an option to consider

  • @cinemon I don’t see anything really special in those videos compared with the things cheaper cameras are capable of.

edit: Mmm, i sounded a bit harsh, I was talking about IQ mostly.

  • the movie samples speak for them self : http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/samples/eos5dmk3/

    especially mario&nette

  • "Yes, but who cares if the Digic 5 is faster if they didn't include the 50/60p mode? Look at the Nikon, uncompressed HDMI, AF, etc...."

Does make a very large difference in terms of skew and artifacts. Clearly it will be a much cleaner output, though not perfect.

I think all in all it would be a worthy update for a professional, especially considering that the resale value of the 5D2 is not going to drop as much in price as the last time.

  • One year ago I was torn between two options: Buying the 5D Mark II, a professional stills camera that shot beautiful video sadly plagued with serious issues or go the GH2 route, a tiny but decent stills camera that shot video sometimes not as beautiful out of the box but much less problematic. Finally I went the GH2 route because I couldn’t deal with moire an aliasing (the perceived resolution didn’t bother me that much) and I’m glad I did: The GH2 (specially the hacked one) is one hell of a movie camera and I do mostly fine-art and street photography so the RAW files from the camera with a little time in post are good enough 95% of the time.

But for those with a hybrid approach who also need a professional stills camera, I can see this 5D Mark III as a really enticing machine. Also the gentle highlight roll-off and superior dynamic range without the damn moire and aliasing issues are enough to make this an interesting filmmaking device.

  • What's wrong with them, no uncompressed 1080p samples. On the other hand I am sure that there will be tons by the end of the month.

  • Yes, but who cares if the Digic 5 is faster if they didn't include the 50/60p mode? Look at the Nikon, uncompressed HDMI, AF, etc....

Canon did a great 5Dm2 4 years ago - since then, they are sleeping and others not only catch up, but got in front..

It obviously is a great still camera though.

  • I mean instead of a 5D3, getting a HyperDeck Shuttle 2 for my GH2 etc etc.

In any case the Digic 5+ is apparently 17 times faster than the Digic IV (5D II), and Canon did say somewhere that the 5D II is powerful enough to handle 1080p60.

That is a tremendous amount of potential that will go untapped (out of the box) according to the specs.

  • Continuing what made the 5D Mark II so popular... The camera compresses video as either I-frame-only or as IPB, for two variations of the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC codec

  • "" I may as well buy a HyperDeck Shuttle 2 I think."

Are you sure that HDMI out is clean? If not, Hyperdeck Shuttle is unusable

  • 91mbs AVC Intra for 25p is very enticing, though I may as well buy a HyperDeck Shuttle 2 I think.

  • Considering all the rush which was made about this camera before release its not a big change against the 5Dm2. All in all - only addition to video is that it does not stop recording after 4GB... bitrates etc - you can still have that with Magic lantern these days on older DSLR's so I don't count this as any plus. No even mentioning the absence of 50p... of which a cheap Sony NEX5n is capable. Another fail from Canon...

  • Although the specs on the 5DM3 appear incremental, I think they are significant. Bitrates, recording times, and audio appeal to my immediate purposes, and perhaps timecode, future features and ML will be useful. Apparently there are internal improvements, too, which I don't really fathom, but as a video shooter the consumer specs are decent.

I think Canon was wise to not overshadow their other products by putting everything into the 5DM3, and I don't see the Nikon D800 as a threat since 5DM2 users, with all their EF lenses, will likely migrate to the logical path of 5DM3. Of course, I won't buy any of this new stuff right away since I'm OK with Panasonic and Vitaliy hacks. Furthermore, I often shoot continuously, so I don't like 30 minute limits, although that's a huge improvement over 12 minutes.

  • @alcomposer "If I were RED I would be very worried about Panasonic - Canon etc..." They are, or why do you think they gave up on the 3K for 3K U$ Scarlet? Took the only way out: upwards.

This Canon is not going to scare Scarlet-X. BTW, they are calling their cameras DSMC (Digital Stills and Motion Camera). And no way I'll invest into any mirror camera again with all those great tiny hi-res screens coming up. I sold my 5D MII for the GH2 and a nice bunch of vintage lenses the day VK hacked it. Why build complex mechanics with a large flange distance when you can go all electronics? It's cheaper and superior, for motion in particular.

VK is right (of course) regarding RED – small company they are – being behind in electronics. But the big corporations are giving us all the miracles sitting in their labs in very small steps, so we buy a new camera every year… BTW, they do this to everybody: remember the F23 when Sony said 2/3 is good for the movies? There goes a quarter million. Then comes the F35, another quarter million. At lest the F65 is cheaper. You need to be very fast to make that much money in time. RED, OTOH, is taking their 'prototypes' back for a full refund after 3 years.

I don't see anything like a Scarlet-X coming from Panasonic or Canon or Sony this year or the next.

So, who can make his/her money from it, go for a Scarlet or even Epic. For the others (same for me with my privately owned camera) go GH2 until something really better is coming.

  • Do these bit rates include PCM audio, too

    Yep, of course.

  • @Vitaliy_Kiselev

    Main video specs

Do these bit rates include PCM audio, too? Then we need to subtract ~1.5 Mbit/s from those numbers. Insignificant, perhaps, but still . . .

  • I like this post from the man himself who caused the original online dust-up

    http://blog.vincentlaforet.com/2012/03/01/canon-5d-mkiii-my-thoughts/

I love how he pretty much says what we know without directly saying it- it still is missing key features it really should have by now...

Conclusion: it's nice, but check out the C300 or the future EOS Cinema line, keep what you got, or compare to Nikon!

    I like the honesty!
