C Mount Lenses for m43

    Hi guys,

    I wanted to know if anyone has experience with C Mount Lenses. I was looking at some different lenses and really don't understand the difference between the CCTV, 16mm, 2/3" C Mount Lenses and if they can work with the GH1.
    I also noticed that they make mention of some Lenses being 1" or 1/2". What does this mean for use with a GH1?

    Is there any lenses like this that can do, for example, 70 to 120mm at f2.8 or faster (so I can use it with the 12.5-75mm instead of one long lens like the 16 to 160mm) ? I've been fooking for something like that for easier portability (especially handheld) ?

    Any 2/3" TV lens will be o.k. on the GH2 in ETC mode, if you can mount it. E.g., 12.5-75 mm lenses are 2/3", but not all of them have mounts that will fit into a C-Mount to Micro Four Thirds adapter.     Balazer, which one of those lens you mentioned earlyer would you recommend for run & gun shootings and for live events indoor and outdoor filmed with a GH2 (weddings, sports, festivals, stage works, vlogs, etc) ?

    I record live performances with Panasonic 100-300 lens and am looking for something of the same or wider focal length range but with motorized zoom. Can someone recommend me a C mount TV lens for that purpose? And is it a wise idea in general? I mean there must be some drawback I'm not aware of, like for instance I don't understand is there a way to have AF on such lens or is it all manual beyond the zoom lever etc

    The 11-110 and 12.5-75 mm lenses are for the 2/3" format. They won't cover 4k on the GH4. 1" format lenses will. You can usually guess the format of a TV zoom lens just by looking at the range of focal lengths. Most 1" lenses start at 15-20 mm, e.g. 18-108, 16-160, 15-150, 15-90, 16-100, 16-96, 17-102, 20-100, 22.5-90, 25-100, 25-350, and have maximum apertures between f/1.5 and f/2.3. The 18-108 f/2.5 is a notable exception: it's a 2/3" inch. Fujinon 1" lens models start with C, and Canon 1" lens models start with V. Canon TV-16 lenses are also 1". J is Canon's 2/3". H is Fujinon's 2/3".

    Picked up a Cosmicar 12.5mm/1.8, doesnt quite cover my GH2, covers my friends GH4 and looks good, just freehanding it atm, waiting for adapter, but it looks great.

    Wanted opinions on the 1.8 zooms,

    The computar TV zoom lens, 11-110mm/1.8, is this okay on the GH4 in 4K?

    Same with Canon J6 12.5-75mm/1.8

    See the sensor coverage table at http://www.personal-view.com/faqs/gh2-usage/gh2-usage . The 8 mm format matches 720 ETC mode or slightly larger.

    I don't have a GH4. The GH2, GH3, and GH4 all have the same pixel pitch, so you can test on any of them by shooting stills and cropping.

    The Canon Canon J6x11-II is a cheap CCTV lens, made by Spacecom I'm guessing. (same as Rainbow zooms). The Spacecom/Rainbow zoom lenses are o.k. - not great.

    I don't have the Canon J10x11 f/1.6, but I do have its brother, the J10x11 f/1.8. It's a very good lens. They are for 2/3-inch single-tube Sony shoulder cameras, circa 1980. http://www.smecc.org/sony_lens_manual_0_-_1982.htm Look for a macro ring on your lens. If it has one, it can be used as a backfocus adjustment so you don't need to shim. But you may still need to remove shims and/or o-rings from under the mount so that it will screw down far enough to allow room for a Micro Four Thirds adapter.

    I would love to see samples of the 2.5K using 2/3" lenses!
    I have the Canon J6x11-II 11.5-69mm f1.4 that I've been wondering how it would work on the GH4.
    And I just acquired a Canon J10x11 11-110mm F1.6 that I'm more excited about now!

    Plus my Rainbow 8-48 f1.0 will still work great in ETC mode!

    The GH4's effective sensor area in 3840 x 2160 UHD mode is 16.52 mm diagonally. Compare that to various C-mount format diagonals:

    • 1-inch: 16.00 mm. 97% coverage - an almost perfect match.

    • 16 mm: 12.70 mm. 77% coverage - crop to 2880 x 1620 in post

    • 2/3-inch: 11.00 mm. 67% coverage - crop to 2560 x 1440 in post

    • 1/2-inch: 8.00 mm. 48% coverage - use 1080 ETC mode. (same as the GH2 and GH3)

    I have all of the sensor coverage percentages in the FAQ at http://www.personal-view.com/faqs/gh2-usage/gh2-usage .

    So you get better-than-HD resolution with lots of easily found TV and cine lenses. And trust me, many of these lenses are easily delivering that resolution, at least in the center. (not always in the corners) The GH4 lets you take advantage of C-mount lenses better than any other camera.

    2/3-inch 6x zoom 12.5-75 mm f/1.8 lenses are easy to find and easy to adapt to Micro Four Thirds. Just search eBay for "12.5-75 1.8 lens". Suitable 1-inch zoom lenses are harder to find. For those not familiar, TV zoom lenses are almost all two-touch, parfocal, and have a constant f-number across the zoom range. Those are great things for shooting video. Usually you'll need to shim a C-mount lens to make it parfocal, because C-mount adapters are almost all shorter than they should be. Metabones claims their adapters have the correct flange focal distance, but I haven't tried.

    +1 Looks like it has a light vignette in some shots. Save a little more & buy yourself a Nikkor 35mm F2 and be happy.
