Beginners: Help me find specific settings topic
  • Hi, new poster here.

Hoping someone could help me narrow down my choices among the plethora of patches on here.

I mainly need a patch that would help me best with event capturing/running and gunning. (i.e. weddings, commercial events, concerts, etc.)

    I'm looking for:

    • Clean skin tone

    • Low-light performance

    • Reasonably sized files

    • Fluid motion

    • A decent 720p setting (for 60p slow-mo)

    • Stability

The lens I'll be using most of the time will be the Voigtlander 25mm f/0.95.

Also, just to put it out there. I am also interested in a patch that would work great for footage with a lot of action for a music video project.

These are the patches I've tried out and tested so far:

    @cbrandin 44M/32M(spanning) GOP12 AQ4

    @bkmcwd 66M/50M GOP3 AQ3

    @balazer Cake 2.0

I appreciate any help/advice from anyone. Thank you.

  • What patch is the best for fast motion camera without strob effect at 24p?

  • Thanks @mrbill I have been using a setting which produced - for static shots around 38mbps (variable) I think its one of the earlier version of cluster.

    And I am shooting 25p.

I was fine with the current settings, although I wound not mind pushing it higher as the new episode I am editing at the moment does not have enough dynamic range for colour correction. It was an evening and had to push the ISO to 400. The shot was backlit by the evening sun and I had no other artificial light source or reflector to bounce the light on the subject' face.

That is why I am on lookout for new settings, also I have invested in bmpcc recently as well to avoid situations like this.

  • If you need to shoot at a 'broadcast' frame rate - i.e. using hbr mode, then you've got lots of options. I settled for flowmotion 2.2 as it had a good balance of being reliable but producing great images. If you're ok with a 24fps delivery, then the highest quality patch you can shoot with will be one of Driftwood's - lots of people like Moon, versions 5 and 7. Try these for starters.

  • Hi there,

I am looking for Ptool setting recommendation for shooting documentaries (for TV).

My criteria is stability, bitrate at least 50Mbps but not more than 80Mbps and good for colour grading (All I Frame?).

    Any suggestions?

    many thanks

  • My setup

    • GH2
    • Panasonic Lumix 20mm
    • Glidecam HD1000
    • Rode Videomic
    • SanDisk Extreme SDHC 32 GB 45 MB/s Class 10

    • I would like to shoot big landscapes while walking/running with the steadycam. Mostly with the sun.

    • I would like to shoot in 720p60 for smaller file size and slowmotion where I want.
    • If I have to buy another card, I will.
  • Hi,

im not sure wich hack is probably the best for me. I own the gh2 with the Nokton 17.5 mm and the sd card for 95mbs recording. I need stable recording times between 1 hour and 1,5 hours. My wish is to get less noise and more room to grade with davinci resolve lite.

Sry for the bad english. It's not my main language

    Greetings from germany -Matthias

  • Hey everybody! First of all I want to thank everybody involved in this forum and hacking the GH-Series! I've been silently reading here for about a year now and I think I've probably learned more than in some of my Filmlessons at the University. So, as my upcoming Projects are getting bigger, I'd like to finally hack my GH2. But I'm slightly overwhelmed by the quantity of hacks out there, and thus having read a lot I still can't figure out which fits me best. I hope I can get here a clue of what hacks have been reliable for my purposes. I shoot mainly narrative shorts, well-lit and color graded afterwards. I am searching for a better overall image quality, more detail in the shadows and less noise (or at least less digital-looking) and artefacts when grading. I use a 32Gb and a 16GB SanDisk Extreme 45MB/s and preferably the hack should work with those. About Spanning I'm concerned that the camera stops recording when covering a Master-shot. So it'd be best if spanning works or the datarate isn't xtreme (so that I can record at least around 8 minutes before the 4Gb limit is reached, that should be enough time to cover the longest scenes). I -only- use 24p so I don't care about what's happening to the other mode, but in 24p it's important that the hack is reliable.

So, what are your opinions and experiences?

  • Hey I just bought a 32gb 95mb/s extreme pro card for my GH2 and currently have the No Adverse Hack installed http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/953/gh2-settings-vault-most-popular-settings-in-one-place/p1&#Item_5 However I noticed that while No Adverse is basically one of the safest hacks around to use I was wondering if there were any better suited for the 95mb/s card to give it more of a reason for purchasing it. I feel like I could use the No Adverse Hack along with my Transcend 32gb that I bought originally along with my GH2.

Know any cool hacks I should try and use on the 95mb/s that I can get atleast 1 and half to 2 hours of footage with?

Btw I just noticed with some of my footage in Premiere Pro CS5 it gave me a weird green and red screen when previewing videos. I ended up closing the program, ejecting the memory card(had the files imported from the card, and was running it off that; hopefully that was the problem) the imported the files to my computer and then reimported them and everything seems to be fine but I feel like this problem will return. Should I download something to convert the files or is there another solution?

  • I have not been around these forums in a long time. What's the general consensus for a great all around 24P setting that wont lock up or freeze? Like to use it making commercials and corporate videos so it has to be reliable.

    I have 64gb 95mbs extreme pro cards.

Also what about a 720p 60 setting for slow motion?

  • @luekio I like Intavenus v2. Many like Intravenus v1 or Boom. Many also like Moon v5. There's a topic on this site somewhere that has a lot of the different settings.

  • Looking for a settings recommendation for 24p narrative film making. Image quality is king, file size not a concern, short takes are fine. Have a sandisk extreme pro 96 card. Thanks!

  • @FrankAbyss

tips for shooting under these circumstances

Polarizing filter will help you a lot.

  • @FrankAbyss did you try the Flowmotion by LPowell?

  • The most reliably ever tested Driftwood settings (including iA and iDynamic modes) were Cluster 6 Series: Nebula or DREWnet released last year - check earlier Driftwood threads.

  • I have installed the "No adverse affects" hack; the way to tell if the hack has been taken by the camera is to look at the recording times on the SD card, before and after any hack's installation (set to 24P Cinema mode); after any hack, it's my understanding that the recording times shown on the card will be less (because the files resulting from any hack have higher bit rates and hence will show less (lower) recording times.

And I can say from experiments over this last week since installing this particular hack, recording in 720p/60 will yield footage that can be slowed well (I use Final Cut Studio).

  • Hello All, I have a GH2 and I'm new to videography.

All my videos revolve around water, mostly ocean. I shoot mostly fishing-oriented clips (lots of reflections, very, very bright). I shoot in 720 to have a more fluid video when it needs to be shown in slower motion. (ie sailfish/ dolphin making a series of jumps).

Can anyone recommend the best/most stable hack for that type of application (least amount of artifacts, more precise details during "action" shoots, less blurry frames ? Thanks!

ps if any pros want to share tips for shooting under these circumstances, I'm all ears!

  • I shoot mostly skateboarding and sports, im using flowmotion 2.02 right now i think, any other good hacks out there that i should be testing out? I have 16gbSDXC 95mbs card.

    Thanks for any advice.

  • I think I have installed the "No adverse affects" hack; the camera had firmware 1.1 installed on delivery, and I followed all the directions for adding this hack to it in Ptool, and loading onto card, following mpgxsvcd's excellent video. The update looked like it was doing something (took ~45" or more to complete). What's the quickest/simplest way to check that the hack is installed? I did read all the GH2 FAQs before posting. What I am hoping for is a setting or function that does not appear in the Panasonic 1.1 firmware, but does in "No adverse affects".

  • Hi, all. I've finally acquired a fast memory card (the Sandisk Extreme pro, 32 gig), which means that I can probably handle one of the higher-bitrate hacks. I'd like to give the card a good shakedown, so I have a few questions. Such as:

Which of the higher-bitrate hacks would be best to try out? Flow Motion failed with a slower card, so I could try that one, but is there another that offers lesser macroblocking?

Any suggestions as to what I should photograph, to really stress the cameras?

I'd also like to test spanning, sound recording, and whether exhausting the battery will damage the recording. I'll probably just aim the camera out my window for a full day for these.

    Suggestions?

  • Newbie question:

I make instructional videos only; no art. I need decent slo-mo, at human movement scale only (no bullets hitting lightbulbs). Running, jumping, etc. I do not want to do any correction in post (to the footage, I mean, talking about lifting shadows, changing exposure). I just want the best 720p for my needs, straight out of camera directly.

All I need is the cleanest rendition of human movement, and only at 720p. I have GH2, second system sound, Panny 25/1.4, CV 12/5.6 on adapter, and Lumix 14/2.5, ancillary gear.

I have watched footage from Sanity, Driftwood, and others; I would very much like other's input on this. The camera will only be used for video; I shoot other gear for stills. TIA, KL

  • @Kev
I see balazer answered you most of questions quicker than I was typing :-) Yes, mind that 1MB/s = 8Mbit/s. And read this part of Faqs regarding the SD cards:

    http://www.personal-view.com/faqs/gh2-hack/gh2-hack-faq

And what I can tell you from my own experience, Balazer's patch "Cake v2.3" might be good one for your needs. Try it and see yourself. That patch spanned just every time on my GH2 and IQ is also excellent

  • @Kev, check the topic titles here and you should find something to suit your needs: http://personal-view.com/talks/categories/hack-top-settings

The GH2's 1080i mode is really 1080i. HBR mode is progressive video formatted as interlaced. http://www.personal-view.com/faqs/gh2-usage/gh2-usage

Don't confuse bits and bytes. Your cards are rated for 45 MB (megabytes) per second, and can do around 20 MB per second even without UHS mode. That's well over 100 Mbps (million bits per second).

  • Hi This is my first post. I've had trouble trying to find the right patch for my uses.

I have two annoying sandisk 32gb extreme 45mbps (and four 8 gig sandisk extreme pro 45mbps) cards and I was looking for a patch that would let me span when shooting 25pHBR and not eat up all the space in my card. ( I do a lot of gigs and weddings with very long takes). I understand that the cards I have are only effectively 22.5mbps because of the gh2's issues with UHS-I. Also I was wondering is the 50i really 50i or is it progressive in an interlaced wrapper like the gh1? If that's the case then I reckon I could make do with that and convert to progressive in post. Might give me more freedom with patches. Any help would be great. I've already tried Sanity but it didn't span with my cards. Got decent record time though.

I guess I'm looking for a patch that is optimised for 25pHBR (or 50i if I can convert it to 25p without any issues) that will span on a sandisk extreme 32gb 45mbps and will still leave me with plenty of space on the card. I also need 720 50p but they'd be for shots no more than a couple of mins.

  • @256colour Kae's patch is indeed old, it was using Panasonic's firmware ver 1.0 - you can read more about that FW version and patches for it in the Faqs:
    http://www.personal-view.com/faqs/gh2-hack/gh2-hack-faq
Otherwise, the link on the mostright column up "top settings" will track you easy to many stable patches.

@panda82 After loading the choosen patch into Ptool you can save the hacked firmware to any SD card and flash it. But for recordings, better use the cards with speed recommended by Nick Driftwood. Slower cards than recommended will usually not work well- either spanning problems or camera freezing will occur. Class 6 won't work for most of driftwood's patches. Read his first post related to the patch you attend to try.

  • Hi. There has been a lot of talk about high bitrate hacks as most of new topics have been mostly about those. I've been using quite old patch from 2011, Kae's 3gop patch which should be about 60M at 24H if i´m right.

I've been browsing a lot of topics here, but haven't found no patches at all around that bitrate and if i have found, like the two on the first post in this topic. Can't seem to find any info if stable or not. I might try the cbrandin 44M/32M(spanning) GOP12 AQ4.

There was some appealing look to Kae's 3gop patch, maybe i´m imagining things. Are there any other new stable patches around that bitrate? Or maybe even lower, when going to record events.
