    Check x570 boards prices (I mean top ones, and they are much simpler and weaker).

    All main board makers specially requested AMD to help them hike the prices to the roof.

    We now have same cartel where you can't buy chipset even for repairs.

    If any company could just buy all main motherboard chips like chipset and multicontrollers (it is more easy, but also restricted) - we will see big failure of Taiwanese cartel.

    None of current Chinese companies are allowed to make their own mainboards due to lack of chipsets supply (they only use desoldered chips from old boards).

    Issue with VRM is that it is extremely packed on small space, making it very inefficient in heat spreading.

  • New socket name is sTRX4

    Only change will be reshuffling of some contacts to prevent compatibility, similar to that AMD made to Ryzen 1st gen on X570 (special modification of BIOS preventing them working!)

    Chipset difference to x399

    CPU actually still has 64 PCI-Express lines, not gen 4.0 x

    • 48 lanes toward PCI-Express x16 slots (x16/x16/x16) or x16/x8/x8/x16
    • 8 lanes toward chipset-bus. AMD is using an extra-wide PCI-Express 4.0 x8 pipe between the CPU and the TRX40 chipset, it is totally idiotic decision, look further
    • 8 general purpose lanes, usually used for 2x M.2 NVMe slots (but can be x4 PCIe x1 motherboard slots, or even additional SATA ports)

    AMD made 8 lines connection to chipset for sole reason - break compatibility with x399 due to Taiwan makers request and their greedy investors.

    The AMD TRX40 chipset is almost 100% X570, just PCI-Express gen 4.0 is configured differently to accommodate the wider x8 chipset-bus.

    • 8 lanes used by chipset-bus
    • 8 general purpose lanes. For external onboard devices such as GbE or WLAN controllers, additional USB controllers, or even wired out as slots.
    • 4 lanes configurable as four SATA 6 Gbps ports, general purpose lanes for slots, or an M.2/U.2 NVMe connection with x4 wiring.
    • Another 4 lanes configurable as four SATA 6 Gbps ports, general purpose lanes for slots, or an M.2/U.2 NVMe connection with x4 wiring.

    As you can see it is ZERO reason to put 8 PCIe lines (and they are v4.0!) to such chipset and with CPU having so much PCIe lines by itself.

    It is some kind of AMD abortion, just reuse of horribly underpowered x570 chipset.

    This last slide is also very interesting an and it means that AMD is actually specially limit Threadripper chips by releasing TRX40 chipset, as IO die is actually 8 memory channel capable.

  • Current Threadripper rumors are that we can never see 64 core version.

    Or it can be restricted to workstation TRX80 chipset.

    Also rumors are that AMD had some management fight and brainstorming how to make new chips incompatible with x399. Only logical reason for it is weaker VRM on many x399 boards that max out at 250-280 watts already. All else is just plain maid up things, like fake doubling of PCIe lines to chipset that no one asked for.

    Real TDP will also be exorbitant, rumors are that you'll need specially made waterblock for efficient cooling.

    Rumors are that AMD decided to hike price 50% up to $3000.

    In 2020 Intel and AMD must finally change positions in HEDT market, where each and every AMD offer will be more expensive for the same performance (but will consume less power, that is important for large render farms and such).
