  • Another Panasonic PR, about ProRes RAW this time.

New ProRes RAW Recording Codecs Support RAW Recording in Panasonic AU-EVA1 and VariCam LT Cameras

NEWARK, NJ (April 5, 2018) -- Panasonic announced today that the AU-EVA1 Compact S35 and the VariCam LT cinema cameras will have support for their RAW data outputs in the new ProRes RAW recording codecs. Native support for ProRes RAW has been introduced in the latest edition of Final Cut Pro X, and Atomos has announced that its Shogun Inferno and Sumo monitor/recorders will record in the new format. In addition to internal recording formats, the EVA1 and VariCam LT can output RAW data for the greatest flexibility in post image adjustment.

“ProRes RAW unleashes the potential of our VariCam LT and AU-EVA1 cinema cameras,” said Mitch Gross, Cinema Product Manager, Panasonic System Solutions Company of North America (PSSNA). “Panasonic likes to provide choices to video professionals. Both the EVA1 and the VariCam LT shoot at multiple resolutions and variable frame rates, and now our RAW output can be captured in a format that’s easy to use. Whether it’s 5.7K resolution or 240fps, our RAW is rich in data but has required a commitment of time and memory space for filmmakers to process and store. Working closely with Panasonic, Atomos enabled ProRes RAW in its recorders, allowing an easy, high quality and complete RAW workflow so professionals can enjoy the powerful capabilities our cameras have to offer.”

With the new EVA2.0 firmware, the EVA1 can output 10-bit Log-encoded RAW data in 5.7K up to 30fps, 4K up to 60fps, and 2K up to 240fps. From the VariCam LT, the Atomos recorders can capture RAW data in 4K up to 60fps and 2K up to 240fps. There are two variable bitrate levels of ProRes RAW being introduced. ProRes RAW HQ and ProRes RAW record at similar data rates as their ProRes video counterparts. This efficiency allows RAW data to be stored in similar memory space as common video files, and Final Cut Pro X can edit and color natively in RAW on a MacBook Pro. ProRes RAW files will also output from Final Cut Pro X to video finishing formats faster than other RAW formats. And Final Cut Pro X now includes increased color correction controls plus support for 3D-LUTs such as Panasonic’s V-Log-to-709 image transform, included in the program.

“Panasonic, Atomos and Apple have combined to deliver an astonishing set of features for end-to-end RAW production – 5.7K30p, 4K60p, 2K240p in 10-bit V-Log recorded on SATA SSDs in ProRes RAW on our Shogun Inferno or Sumo 19,” said Jeromy Young, CEO of Atomos. “We primarily used the EVA1 for ProRes RAW launch testing - it’s the best RAW solution for the price point on the market today.”

Today, Atomos has released the firmware to support EVA1 RAW and VariCam LT RAW to ProRes RAW recording in 4K and 2K resolutions, with 5.7K support scheduled for a May release. Final Cut Pro X with ProRes RAW support is slated to be available for download on Monday, April 9th. The EVA 2.0 firmware with RAW output and VariCam LT v6.0 firmware are available for download now.

  • DJI ProRes RAW Update

April 5th, 2018 -- DJI, the world's leader in creative camera technology, has updated its Zenmuse X7 camera to support the new ProRes RAW standard from Apple. Enabled through firmware updates, the Zenmuse X7 also gains performance enhancements that deliver improved workflows and image quality. These new features increase the power and efficiency of the Zenmuse X7 and reinforce its role in professional filmmaking as the world's first Super35 digital camera designed for aerial cinematography. The firmware updates include:

Apple ProRes RAW Support: A free update for users with the RAW activation package for Inspire 2/Zenmuse X7, ProRes RAW offers the quality and workflow advantages of RAW with the incredible performance of ProRes.

14-Bit Recording: Newly added 14-bit RAW recording mode enables the Zenmuse X7 to capture cleaner scenes with less noise, delivering smoother tones and color transitions while preserving significant detail in both shadows and highlights.

Faster and Lighter Workflow: Enhanced data processing performance makes the Zenmuse X7 more nimble and capable with improvements to its file system and broader operating system compatibility.

"We are thrilled that the Zenmuse X7 has become the first aerial camera to support Apple's new ProRes RAW standard," said Paul Pan, Senior Product Manager at DJI. "Paired with the workflow and imaging improvements announced today, the Zenmuse X7 camera and Inspire 2 drone continue to be an unmatched platform for the most demanding projects in aerial cinematography."

    Apple ProRes RAW Support

ProRes RAW from Apple offers the quality and workflow advantages of RAW with the incredible performance of ProRes. Editors can import, edit and grade pristine footage with RAW data from the camera sensor, providing ultimate flexibility when adjusting highlights and shadows, without slowing down their editing workflow. With the RAW activation package, ProRes RAW files are recorded natively in the Inspire 2/Zenmuse X7 and can be transferred directly to Final Cut Pro X for post production. And ProRes RAW preserves image quality while maintaining smaller file sizes, allowing filmmakers to archive their footage with confidence.

    14-Bit Recording

The new firmware allows filmmakers to record 14-bit CinemaDNG at 6K 23.976 fps, capturing less noise, smoother color transitions and tones while preserving significant detail in both shadows and highlights. With an increase to bit depth recording per pixel that improves overall image quality, filmmakers can rely on the Zenmuse X7 as a significant tool on set, capable of delivering high quality footage even in difficult lighting situations.

    Faster and Lighter Workflow

A lighter and more agile data processing system makes the Zenmuse X7 easier to implement into the set as a valuable tool. As resolution and duration of recording increases the overall file sizes created, the Zenmuse X7 data system has been adapted to manage and process this information more efficiently utilizing the exFAT file system. The newly added format allows larger recordings of up to 32GB to be saved in one single file, streamlining the workflow by eliminating the need to merge smaller files in post processing. The exFAT format not only improves data management but also offers a wider compatibility among macOS and Windows operating systems.

    Availability

The first firmware update offers 14-bit CinemaDNG recording and will be available in late April 2018. A second firmware update offering Apple ProRes RAW support and the newly added exFAT file system will be available in late May 2018. Both firmware updates are free as a download through DJI Assistant 2 or the DJI Go 4 mobile app, while the 14-bit CinemaDNG and ProRes RAW capabilities are only available to those with a CinemaDNG license. For more information on all the new updates, please visit https://www.dji.com/inspire-2/info.
