Nikon D5300 and other APS-C cameras are great for 1080p video.
I developed a Picture Control for use inside the camera with a custom curve for improve dynamic range with good results straight out of camera (it is not a flat or log profile). Also can be used in NX Studio software for convert raw photos into jpg. It can be also combined with Active D-Lighting inside camera for even more dynamic range.
The Picture Control was saved in the D5300 format, but there is also a curve file which can be imported to Nikon Picture Control Utility Software and be saved into other formats for other Nikon cameras.
To use this Picture Control inside the camera you need to load it into the Picture Control Utility Software and click in "Save To Card" (you need a memory card formated in camera and pluged in the computer)
I believe that it can be great if you want to color grade using film simulation softwares and plugins like Magic Bullet Film or FilmConvert or others.

Thanks! I'll go for the D5300 in that case. How long do you reckon is the wait for the price drop?
Whether you are buying new or used, it would pay to wait a few weeks for the D5300 price drop. The D5500 has been announced and apparently the only difference is a touchscreen.
Yes I think the absence of FPN justifies the extra cash for D5300. I have both D5200 and D5300 (I upgrade my D5200 for a D5300 just for FPN) FPN isn’t a big problem like moire or aliasing but it’s still annoying. Sometimes I shoot with 2 cameras (D5300, D5200) It’s very easy to match the pictures. These two pictures are the same. But this f.. FPN on the D5200 !
Hi,
Would you recommend the D5300 over the D5200 for video? I know they're pretty similar and I don't need 60fps or any of the other new features. I just wonder if the absence of fixed pattern noise in the D5300 justifies the extra cash? Or should I save some money and go for the D5200?
Thanks!
Are you able to post some video comparisons of D5300 internal vs HDMI-external? The stills you posted didn't show a huge difference to me (not worth the cost of a Ninja anyway!).
Don't get a Ninja, buy a Shogun. 1080 P60 video is much better quality than the ones shot at 24-30 fps.
Nikon D5300 sports a newly developed 24.2MP sensor without an AA filter for enhanced sharpness, and Nikon's latest EXPEED 4 processor for better high ISO handling and 1080/60p HD video. The addition of built-in Wi-Fi and GPS (a first for a Nikon DSLR) makes this compact, mid-range DSLR an excellent choice for upgrading beginners and budding enthusiasts alike.

D5300 presents D7100-level image quality in a camera body that's somewhere around $400 cheaper. It produces good quality, highly detailed JPEGs and those who are so inclined will find lots of latitude for adjusting Raw files. Like its predecessor, the D5300's Raw files allow shadows to be opened up without introducing too much in the way of noise. Default JPEG rendering is also pleasant, without any over-sharpening halo artifacts.
The D5300's video quality is just as notable as its still image quality. It offers full 1080/60p resolution, available without the crop mode that the D7100 applies to its highest resolution videos.
Shot with a custom Neutral profile.
@drabo: interesting tests, and surprising. I assume you had video quality set to "high" on the D5300? I think the noise is similar though - the RX10 just has a finer grain structure, which might be because of its full-pixel-readout?

Thanks for the tests.
