I developed a Picture Control for use inside the camera with a custom curve for improve dynamic range with good results straight out of camera (it is not a flat or log profile). Also can be used in NX Studio software for convert raw photos into jpg. It can be also combined with Active D-Lighting inside camera for even more dynamic range.

The Picture Control was saved in the D5300 format, but there is also a curve file which can be imported to Nikon Picture Control Utility Software and be saved into other formats for other Nikon cameras.

To use this Picture Control inside the camera you need to load it into the Picture Control Utility Software and click in "Save To Card" (you need a memory card formated in camera and pluged in the computer)

I believe that it can be great if you want to color grade using film simulation softwares and plugins like Magic Bullet Film or FilmConvert or others.
