Nikon D4s
  • image

Will be available March 6th for $6,499.95.

D4S is a multimedia powerhouse, allowing you to capture stunning and smooth 1080/60p video. Shoot scenes with tremendous depth and sharpness as well as with shallow depth of field or bokeh—and even capture 2MP stills simultaneously while recording video. For video, 2.7x Crop Mode extends the reach of lenses and produces outstanding video quality and detail. D4S adds real-time audio adjustments during recording, selectable sound ranges like Wide Range and Voice Range and improved wind noise reduction on the internal mic. Adjust color settings on the camera's LCD to better match an external monitor. Capture smoother Time Lapse sequences with reduced flicker and improved interval control (up to 9,999 shots), and even simultaneously record to internal CF or the latest high speed XQD cards and an external recording device. Create stories that move us.

  • Changes from Nikon D4s “C” firmware version 1.31 to 1.32

Fixed the following issues, which would in rare cases occur when RAW+JPEG photographs were taken with write-enabled cards inserted in both the XQD and CompactFlash card slots, RAW primary - JPEG secondary selected for Secondary slot function in the SHOOTING MENU, and On selected for Network > Options > Auto send in the SETUP MENU.

    • The camera would sometimes freeze on restart after users had (1) pressed the shutter-release button all the way down without first activating the standby timer and then (2) allowed the timer to expire or turned the camera off without first reactivating the timer.
    • If the shutter-release button was pressed all the way down to begin shooting with the standby timer off, the first shot would sometimes neither be marked for transfer nor uploaded.

  • Firmware update version 1.31

Fixed an issue that occurred with WR-R10 wireless remote controller firmware version 3.00. In rare cases, the camera would fail to display the number of exposures remaining or would take about a minute to power down when the WR-R10 was connected.

  • v1.20 firmware

    • Commander mode can now be selected for Custom Setting e3 (Optional flash) when an optional SB-500 flash unit is attached. *
    • The Auto and Flash white-balance options can now be used with the LED light on the optional SB-500 flash unit.
    • Auto white balance is now more consistent.
    • There is no longer a limit on the number of shots that can be taken in a single burst at shutter speeds of 4 s or faster when a continuous-release mode is selected in exposure mode S or M. *
    • There is no longer a limit on how long the shutter can remain open when “Time” is selected for shutter speed.
    • We have changed how focus points are displayed in the viewfinder if the camera is rotated between “wide” (landscape) and “tall” (portrait) orientations with Focus point and AF-area mode selected for Custom Setting a10 (Store by orientation) and different focus points chosen in each orientation. We have also changed how focus points are displayed in the viewfinder if a lens focus function button is pressed with AF-area mode selected for Custom Setting f19 (Lens focus function buttons).
    • Some help text has been changed.
    • The following issues have been resolved: 
      • If the user focused using the AF-ON button before shooting in continuous-release mode, the frame rate would drop under the following conditions: AF-S selected for focus mode, Single-point AF selected for AF-area mode, Focus selected for Custom Setting a2 (AF-S priority selection), and AF-ON only selected for Custom Setting a4 (AF activation).
      • When an AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E lens was attached, “Err” would be displayed in the top control panel and pictures could not be taken under some exposure conditions.
      • Images would sometimes fail to display correctly during image review if playback zoom was used while the memory-card access lamp was lit.
      • Images would not clear from the display if an optional WR-1 wireless remote controller was used with On selected for Image review in the playback menu.
      • The camera photo info display would not show the correct range for pictures taken with an optional flash unit in distance-priority manual flash mode (GN).
      • When pictures taken using a PC-E lens were viewed in Capture NX-D and other Nikon software, the Metadata would list the lens as type E rather than type D.
      • The photo information display for movies, movie stills, and photos taken with the Silent shutter-release option would sometimes list incorrect values for shutter speed, aperture, and ISO sensitivity.
      • If the camera was connected via HDMI to 4K a compatible TV, neither the camera nor the television would display menus correctly.
      • Volume sometimes could not be adjusted if indicators were hidden during movie playback.
      • If both XQD and CompactFlash cards were inserted in the camera when it was connected to a computer, the computer would not recognize the XQD card.

If you're coming from an enthusiast-grade camera, and you're prepared to accept the added heft of a pro shooter with a body that could hammer in tent pegs, you'll doubtless find it to be a spectacular upgrade. The D4S pairs truly great image quality with superb performance.

Image quality from the Nikon D4S is among the very best in all areas. Image noise is extremely low and dynamic-range is exceptionally high.

  • The Nikon D4S' default tone curve is remarkably similar to that of the Canon 5D Mark III.

Compared to the Nikon D4, the D4S offers a whole stop more shadow detail, while not sacrificing any highlight detail. The D4S' tone curve offers higher contrast in the brighter midtones than its predecessor, along with a more subtle roll-off from near-white to completely 'clipped' regions. Compared to the Sony A7, the D4S also offers a whole stop more shadow detail, but clips to white 2/3 EV earlier.

  • New firmware

    • When Custom Setting f1 (Multi selector center button) > Playback mode was set to View histograms, the histogram was not displayed correctly for the image played back in the monitor, even when the center button on the multi selector was pressed, when the following conditions were met. This issue has been resolved.
      • Image quality was set to NEF (RAW) + JPEG fine, NEF (RAW) + JPEG normal, or NEF (RAW) + JPEG basic.
      • An option other than "Overview data" or "RGB histogram" was selected for photo information displayed with full-frame image playback.
    • With full-frame image playback with "Highlights" or "RGB histogram" display selected, image chroma (saturation) changed with flashing of highlights. This issue has been resolved.
    • When images captured with Color space set to Adobe RGB were enlarged with playback in the monitor, image chroma (saturation) changed. This issue has been resolved.
    • When Rotate tall in the playback menu was set to On, and an image captured in "tall" (portrait) orientation was enlarged slightly (playback zoom-in button pressed once or twice) with monitor playback, the image did not appear to be very sharp or clear. This issue has been resolved.
    • With capture of a Compressed RAW image, followed by a Lossless compressed RAW image, with Image quality set to NEF (RAW), the camera was sometimes unable to correctly record the second RAW image. This issue has been resolved.

  • Nikon D4 adds a number of enhanced features, including quicker continuous shooting with AF/AE, increased speed ethernet, as well as improved video recording. Where there is the most noticeable improvement is in the increase in image quality and specifically noise performance, which gives excellent results right up to ISO25600 and even ISO51200. The improvements have meant the camera's video mode will also shoot at ISO25600, and stills photos can be taken at a whopping ISO setting of ISO406900, giving the camera the highest ISO setting of any Digital SLR available.

The Nikon D4s is an extremely well built and very responsive camera that seems to react instantly to anything you throw at it. Start-up feels instantaneous, there is no shutter lag to speak of and with the right lens mounted, focusing is also very fast. The D4s is about as rugged as it gets, and the ergonomics are first class. There are a multitude of ways to check and modify settings, and you can set up the camera to work just about any way you like.
