SANITY X - High Bitrate Version of Sanity

    I just did a quick test of Sanity X 24H on a sandisk 64GB 45MB/s. I was filming a computer screen showing a realtime demo of some 3D graphics engine. ISO 3200 (for lotsa noise) and ex tele crop zoom mode was activated. I let it record for an hour and it did fine.

    Fantastic! That's a serious torture test. ETC mode is much more taxing on the codec than normal mode.

    If Sanity X DOESN'T have Pasadena (@Ralph_B is this true?) then yes, I would recommend Pasadena. I use Pasadena because without it the steps between the audio level settings are too great. One is too quiet, the other is too loud. Pasadena evens it out a bit.

    I Had the same pb as Axier while shooting a interview. My Camera was stable but sometimes after 15 sc of recording it froze showing a error message: The recording was stopped because of the speed of the memory card. I used a Transcend 32 Gb, class 10, 600x (90mb/S). Same thing with a San disk 16GB 30mb/S... Any ideas about what I might be doing wrong ?

    Try a different card. I know that sounds heartless, but it's the only practical thing to do. People don't understand that the performance of SD cards is not always what it seems. Here's an example of a Sandisk 64GB 80M card.

    Wow! That's scary, huh? Look at those momentary dips. If you happened to hit a valley like that while recording, you could very well get a write error.

    Sanity X is stable. SD cards are not.

    Thanks, I suspected that but I had faith in the Transcend cards...

    I thought I had faith in Sandisk, but there you have it. You can't assume anything in this business.

    Here's some documentation shot in Sanity X 24H mode. I compiled the shots in a rush, no post-processing whatsoever has been done. Lots of shadows/darks, gradients and blown highlights for you to check.

    Projectors are DLP's, hence the color banding and flickering.

    Lens is PanaLeica 25mm.

    I tried Sanity X for very first time in ETC mode. Just terrible! Drastic moving waves of noise even at ISO160.

    I have to film a theater show. I want to use my GH2 in one long shot, in program "P", Iso 2000, in autofocus, with a sd card 64go 90MB and in HBR. Do you think that it will span well? If not, wich hack do you advise me? Thanks

    Spanning should work with a card that fast, but you should alaways do a test first, to be sure.

    Hi Ralph. Im comparing your sanity x patch to cake 2.3. Im getting higher bit rates with sanity x but Im also getting more record time with it as well. Using gh2 720p sh. using same scenes with both patches. any insight?

    Sanity is a variable bitrate patch, so the bitrate is constantly changing depending on the complexity of the scene. This is one way it attains it's high efficiency. It also makes it impossible to compare to other hacks simply based on bitrate. You really have to look at the image quality. One technical advantage of variable bitrate is it enables Sanity to have very high bitrate I frames. This directly translates into better image quality.

    thank you for your reply ralph. is sanity x better than cake 2.3 in your humble opinion. does it look better in 720p. not trying to start a war with you mad scientists lol but tell me is it better?

    Sorry, not going there. You really have to do your own tests. The only thing I'll say is that at low ISO's and in good light, all the hacks will provide a great picture. But at higher ISO's in low light, you will begin to see differences, particularly in the shadows. Also, pay attention to how the noise itself is rendered.

    @Ralph_B Hy, I had download sanity X in my GH2. Last with Sanity 3 I had 4 hours left, now with Sanity X (+ Pasadena) I have 6 hours. Is it OK?

    Yes, it's OK and normal. Sanity X and Sanity 5.1 are variable bitrate patches and far more efficient than Sanity 3. You will get more footage on a card and the quality will actually be better!

    I'm a big fan of S5.1 and used it many times without any issues. Thought I'd try SX for a specialist shoot- and started getting camera freezes and complaints about card speed (Sandisk 32gb 45mb/s). Fortunately it was only testing, not the actual client shoot. We were filming under special lighting conditions that allow changing light frequencies across the whole RGB spectrum. Could this have been a factor? Have tried to jam the camera running sx filming normal exteriors and interiors but it seems ok. We will continue testing under the lab conditions with s5.1 and sx but was interested in your opinion. I know the San 32/45 card has had issues in past but they've always been fine for us - until now. So is it sx, is it the card or is it the extreme lighting conditions? I'll let you know if we find anything conclusive.

    Hard to say what's the cause. Isolated glitches can definitely arise from the card. Did you see my post above?

    They can also occur from the GH2 itself, hack or no hack. Before the hack and running stock, my camera quit recording without warning many times. All I could do is shrug my shoulders and hit the record button again. I doubt the problem is Sanity X because it survived the very severe torture tests I put it through.

    I have been using Sanity X for 2 weeks and I notice something strange. First I tried Flow Motion and the bit rate was 100M, after I tried Sanity 3 and the bit rate was 33M and now with Sanity X all my shots are in 25M bit rate. I have filmed in HBR. You say that the bit rate in variable but I didn't notice it. Are you sure that the bit rate change? And in wich conditions? Thanks

    Comparing bitrates between various patches is meaningless because each patch is designed differently. Image quality and stability are what's important. Trust your eyes and don't worry about bitrates. Seriously.
