Official Panasonic GH3 topic

  • @Tobsen as u said we should at least have 720p modes @ 120fps in gh3.

  • @Kihlian sony fs700 is gonna add its new firmware with 240 fps 1080p and 4k 24fps 25fps and 30fps support.

  • @thepalalias i agree if we get succeed with 15000 mah battery it would sure be the one to take in seriously. for production we need at least 6 hours of battery backup. company like panasonic must realize this. sony has 12000 mah batteries. most third party batteries for sony works amazing.canon 5ds and 7ds do have backup third party batteries for 8 hours continuous shooting. yes regarding the sensor its so true. do you know the d600 nikon has an hdmi uncompressed 10bit 4:2:2 out?? panasonic is actually very slow compared to its competitors.

i suspect still the rolling shutter problem is not reduced or solved. i know even sony fs700 has rolling shutters when it comes to pan. but it is very minimal. gh2 has it like a something from mars. did u heard any news about an improvement on this side.

  • @christianhubbard 720p 120fps...would be nice as well. let's see how many people jump on board.

    4:2:2

    720p 120fps

    peaking

  • @christianhubbard +1 even 120fps is not so up to date for today. 250 fps was already implemented on the Sony hdr-ax2000e (must say had bad quality)

  • @mrgroove

I totally overlooked your comment about you having been in close contact with Panasonic and gave them some ideas. What did you suggest? 4:2:2 as well? If so, what did they say?

Are you still in contact with Panasonic????

  • Can we add 720p 120fps to that? Even if it's only a burst mode. It's really a must have for all the sports I shoot.

  • @Toben, @mrgroove said he did. So @mrgroove if we can get a petition going for 4:2:2, can you relay that info to the GH3 team that it's a must have?

  • @HillTop1 Fastest way: find somebody that consulted them and make him our door opener to Panasonic. Emails etc don't work. They said they talked to a number of GH2 users and tried to incorporate their suggestions into the GH3. Who were those people? Raise your hands, please! Another way: social media?

  • @Tobsen, there gotta be an effective way of letting the GH3 team hear and know about the need for 4:2:2. That's something I was betting that they will/must have on the GH3.

  • @rajamalik +1 4:2:2 in camera and 10 bit. The price with 12-35 is crazy I hope it drop very soon.

  • @rajamalik Battery is not still the same. It increased by over 500 maH (don't remember the exact number off the top of my head).

But if it works as well with the ATC 15,000 maH add-on as the GH2 seems to be (still testing) then we could have a way around that. So far indications are that it should easily run for well over 5 hours - I have not had a chance to test it much yet.

But with the grip and 2 of the new batteries we should be looking at at least 3:30 to 4 hours or more.

As far as the higher bitrates: I think they are better for the hacks. Panasonic is doing better than their competitors at 50P and 60P (28 mbps Sony?) and these bitrates are stable. We cannot even get dependable spanning except on a very specific range of cards - so unless Panasonic was ready to release specially branded cards, raising the bitrates too far would have alienated a lot of users that could not get it to work with their cards.

And let us not forget how good SMBU v1 looked about a year ago at very similar GOP1 bitrates.

BUT, if VK can have similar success with the GH3 as the previous ones, higher bitrates for those willing to work at it should be possible again. I think that may be the way to go.

Honestly, I think there is much more reason to be outraged about the sensor change. Why did they stop using multi-aspect? It is very, very frustrating.

  • 2-4 more stops?!

  • I am not happy. I was so excited about the release of the GH3 and now I started looking at Nikons! What happened? I mean I like so many of those new features and I think that the GH3 could be a real step up from the original stock GH2 (we cannot count the hacked versions). Driftwood and LPowell gave us a hint of what the cam could put out if hacked, but man....4:2:0? Probably we pumped our hopes and expectations way too high (thanks to all the rumors) and now we feel the fall. I don't know...just my thoughts....

    Facebook petition? Maybe childish.

  • I spoke to many Panasonic Guys about the GH3.

Nobody knew about the Dynamic Range. Shame.

I shot almost identical videos with my GH2 and their GH3 - using the same lens (they gave me one 12-35mm f2.8) and same shutter/f-stop. Well, judging by histogram and eyesight (GH3 has no zebra as of yet, and also not the semi-zebra of the GH2 - firmware is 0.4 at the moment) -

it seems to have some 2-4 stops more DR.

really hard to tell. But my GH2 clearly had white clipping while the GH3 didn't seem to.

It was not allowed to use my own sd card to keep the videos. also worth mentioning: there was occasional stutter in the video capture/there was dropped frames. accessing the menu while hdmi attached leads to playback menu which can not be left. :-D

Well done, guys^^ - well, it IS Beta and there are only 10 GH3s out there at the moment, they told me.

  • @blackspot

How is it that with all the incredible talent out there Panasonic provide a test GH3 to someone who's obviously struggling to know what to do with it?

  • @Manu4Vendetta

I'm confused by that girl - a mix between Marion Cotillard and Eva Green lol

  • No focus peaking :-(

  • @mlysbakken @Amadeus5D2

    1. RGB (4:4:4) is super standard for video production.now a days 4:2:2 is very essential, especially when it comes to digital film making. we aren't craving for RGB. at least companies like panasonic should consider 4:2:2.

    2. iFrames is only for 1080 24P no iframe recording possible using 50p and 60p option this is a bullshit. 72mbit iframe 24p is good but why its 72mbit while canon 5d mk3 already released a camera with 90mbit iframe on 24p modes??? cant it reach over 90mbit or panasonic purposefully leaving such to hackers to push it too high???

    3. battery is still the same 1850mah with battery grip we can load 2 batteries which can only keep the camera running for 2 hours and 30 minutes is also the worst thing. sony hav 8000 mah batteries for its most cameras. there are third party batteries for sony which gives 12000 mah with proper battery indicator code support.why panasonic is so amateur??. still i am looking for better batteries for my gh2s (which could work without damaging my camera). panasonic seems to always look for hackers to promote their cameras free of charge. if they provide proper camera why we need a hack. gh1 hacked, gh2 hacked, gh3 sure will get nicely. look for 240mbit 24p 176mbit 60p and 50p all iframes soon from driftwood. Panasonic must learn.

  • I have an idea. If VK just announce " No more hackargentina for Pana", gh3 price would drop and we'll all happy :-)

  • @Manu4Vendetta

Yet another blurry GH3 clip. :/

  • Another test in low ligth with a prototype from Emmanuel Pampuri. ISO 1600 and 3200.

  • when you compare US prices with European prices in the camera market it is usually 1:1 - because the cams are substantially cheaper in the US

true, but the advantage is that the product are usually more available in Europe, neither the GH2 nor the Voigtlander 25mm were out of stock for long here.

  • I'll send Panasonic an email tonight regarding 4:2:2 ;)
