  • am i right in remembering people saying that the voigtlander 17.5 fits well with the samyangs? have the voigt and am thinking ahead to complementing it in a set...

  • @rajamalik I shot a series of ads with the Nikon 105mm, it's a fabulous lens. It's good for character portraits if you are doing narrative work.

@dreinz Definitely the Zeiss 85mm f/1.4, but I dont have the means to get one now, so Samyang is a stop gap.

  • Tokina AT-X 287 Pro 28-70mm f2.8 ?? is it the same one like x270.

  • @dreinz @kazuo good list. Thank you people. what about 100+ mm primes. nikon 105mm and nikon 135mm these 2 lenses are bokeh special lens. are they good??

  • @Kazuo

I forgot to mention I'm a GH2 user. I don't really have any experience with Cine Lenses or Zeiss. I currently have 14-140mm and Canon FD 50mm F1.4.

    You prefer Samyang 85mm f/1.4 over the Contax Zeiss 85mm f1.4 ($650)?

I was thinking going down the road of Rokinon or Nikon setups. What do you think about going down either of these paths?

    Thanks

  • @dreinz

Your Zeiss setup most resembles the kit I started out with. But i have since sold my Nokton 25mm, so now what i have is as follows:

    • Zeiss 20mm f/2.8
    • Zeiss 28mm f/2
    • Zeiss 50mm f/1.4
    • Zeiss Makro 60mm f/2.8
    • Zeiss 28-85mm f/3.3-4 (zoom lens is most useful for run and gun)
    • Angenieux 45-90mm f/2.8 (lovely zoom, vintage lens, tack sharp for the first Leica R zoom in history)
    • Samyang 85mm f/1.4 (probably the only Samyang worth keeping)

All in all, my lens set up costs around $7500 at today's market rates

  • Looking for peoples thoughts/experiences on the various Lens Setups I have researched and organized here. Looking for a lens kit that will cover a range of shooting scenarios (Interview Business Videos, Narrative Work and Non-Wedding Events). I prefer to shoot manually and its only for video work (no photos).

    Zeiss Setup -

    • Contax Zeiss 85mm f/1.4 | $650
    • Contax Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 | $370
    • Voigtlander 25mm f/0.95 | $1200
    • Olympus 12mm f/2.0 | $800
    • Tokina AT-X 270 Pro 28-70mm f2.8 | $290
    • Total: $3490

    Rokinon Cine Lens Setup

    • Rokinon 85mm T1.5 Cine Lens| $350
    • Rokinon 35mm T1.5 Cine Lens | $550
    • Rokinon 14mm T3.1 Cine Lens | $450
    • Tokina AT-X 270 Pro 28-70mm f2.8 | $290
    • Total: $1640

    Nikon Setup

    • Nikon AF 85mm f/1.8 | $460
    • Nikon 50mm f/1.4 AI-S | $170
    • Nikon 28mm f/2.0 AI-S | $320 or Nikon 24mm f/2.0 AI-S | $400
    • Tokina AT-X 270 Pro 28-70mm f2.8 | $290
    • Total: $1240/$1320

    Canon FD Setup - Canon FD 85mm f/1.8 S.S.C Lens | $250 - Canon FD 50mm 1.4 | $130 - Canon FD 35mm F2 | $250 - Tokina AT-X 270 Pro 28-70mm f2.8 | $290 - Total: $920

I couldn't find any appropriate wide lenses for the Canon FD or Nikon setups.

  • Olympus M.Zuiko ED 45mm f/1.8 should be high on the list for anyone doing M4/3 portrait-size shots. While there's no Samyang at that focal length, there's very little competition.

  • On 135 f2 ?

  • jason i accept,..u r rite,... i had such problem in my d5100 too,..the best lens worked worse sometimes,..handling and people to people it changes i believe...

  • u mean the super dooper Voightlander 25mm f0.95 Nokton lens

  • Maybe you should consider getting all Voightlander Nokton lenes that way all your footage will match.

  • oh thats cool, information....... hai let me ask u something,.. do canon fd 85mm 1.2 L manual older generation lens does fantastic than any other 85mm lenses?? is it true??? does it has any proof that canon is the best in 85mm especially this f1.2 model??

  • SLR magic hyperprime 50mm f0.95 for Micro Four thirds is a awful CCTV lens, really soft and crappy.

The SLR Magic Hyperprime 50mm 0.95 for M-Mount is supposed to be almost as good as the $11,000 Lecia Noctilux, but it is not out yet.

    Check it out. stevehuffphoto.com

  • oh,... i can afford it,...if its the best,..not so much but ok if its best,.i mostly prefer if its much cheaper and comparatively good with these expensive glasses. can minoltaand takumar can get such grade,... i beleive magic hyperprime 50mm f0.95 reaches the comparative standard with nokton,...but they are all above $1000

  • No but you can them for way cheaper.

  • these 2 lenses Minolta 50mm 1.4, Super Takumar 50mm 1.4 ,..can do better bokeh than nokton 50mm f1.1 lens???

  • For 50mm I would take a look at the Minolta 50mm 1.4 or the Super Takumar 50mm 1.4 radioactive lens.

  • you can always get a rokkor 50mm 1.7 for about 30 bucks on ebay... its a great lens with nice bokeh. Used it with GH2 on my short documentary, which even won an award in germany. :)

  • Lumix 14mm 2.5 + optionally DMW-GWC1

    Leica 25mm 1.4 DG or Nokton 25mm 0.95

    M.Zuiko 45mm 1.8 or Nokton 58mm 1.4

    Lumix 14-140 or 45-175

  • @chaos123x yes even i would recommend the same "nokton 25mm 0.95 is superb in f2 setting it gives sharper picture too"

see i speculated only in 85mm tag. canon L 85mm 1.2 or zeiss 85mm 1.4 or nikon 85mm 1.4,..lot in mind,..but i preferred to stick with old canon 85mm 1.2 i dont know exactly which is the best. but there are few videos with 85mm 1.2 canon and gh2,..here is one,...

  • Thanks for dropping knowledge spacewig I did not know that.

As for the OP I would reccomend spending the big money on the 25mm Nokton and then hunting around thrift stores, farmers markets, and craigslist for old FD and other vintage glass that you can get for a bargain.

My friend got a whole set of Minolta primes all for $80 the first thrift shop he checked. When he got home the lenses covered his entire coffee table!!

  • @Chaos123x

Didn't want to post in this quasi-schizophrenic thread but wanted to correct you: The 12mm in not strictly focus by wire. When you pull down on the focus barrel it becomes a regular stopped focus lens. Hence the distance scale on the shaft (revealed when the barrel is set to manual focus position).

  • That Nokton is a beautiful lens. I like that bathroom video. Too bad out of my price range.

Svart, I ended up getting a Vivitar 28mm f2.8 for $55, a Konica Hexanon 40mm f1.8 for $77 and a Sigma 24mm f2.8 for $50. The Vivitar has a Canon FD mount, so I ordered one one of those adapters from Rainbow Imaging. I guess I'll have to wait to see what adapters will work with the other two. I paid a little more than I probably should have for the Vivitar and Konica, since I did see them cheaper, but I wanted them in very good condition. The Sigma I think I got a decent deal on, since I saw two similar for about $160, but we'll see what condition its in when it arrives. There may be a reason for that cheaper price. I'll post a video testing them out when I get them delivered and set up. I'm dying to check out that Konica in some low light settings.

  • You can find nikon 50 and 24mm lenses on ebay for a lot cheaper than those prices..
