Panasonic GX80, GX85, or even GX7 Mark II in Japan

  • GX85+12-32mm or +20mm f1.7:

  • When I see something like this, I have to step back and realize how far technology has brought us. Back in '05, I volunteered at SXSW, which allowed me full access to the latest stuff. I had been hoping for years that video technology could get close to film. In '05, it still had not. Except for a touch of moire' in one shot, this video demonstrates that an ordinary consumer can now shoot motion pictures of a quality previously available only to cinematographers working in 35mm film.

  • Hey, I am no ordinary consumer, I am an extraordinary consumer! :)

  • Like I said, any extraordinary consumer. You heard me, right?

  • Will the 14-42 3.5-5.6 work with the dual IS? I got contradictory information from Panasonic. The chat person said yes, but the compatibility chart said "with lens firmware update". There is no firmware update listed for this lens (H-FS1442A, the later version).

  • GX85 + 12-32mm + 35-100mm pancakes:

  • I discovered a minor issue today that spoiled my plans. I had a client who wanted to preview still images on location as I shot them. I thought no problem I'll use the HDMI out and just like video send them to a video village monitor. Slight problem when you plug in the HDMI cable it locks the camera in 16:9 mode even in stills mode you can't change it it's greyed out. I found no way around it if someone knows how to force it to 4:3 while using HDMI out for preview please share.

    Cool video, Mark!

  • Does this camera (automatically?) stabilise Olympus zoom lenses?

  • @Mark041 great shot of the Cathedral facade.

  • Thanks. That façade shows the value of good 4K.

  • 12-32mm and 35-100mm Lumix pancakes.

  • 12-32mm only.

  • GX85 with Panasonic Nocticron and SLR Anamorphot 1.33x.

  • GX85 + Nocticron for what it's good for: Night shots!

Very nice. Have you tried these Christmas figures using GH4 and V-log and rendering HDR?

  • The main annoyance of shooting with the GX85 is the electronic viewfinder. It’s a field-sequential LCD panel, which means it’s susceptible to some very distracting color anomalies. The EVF on the GX85 sucks compared to what you’ll get in the GX8, or for that matter the Olympus PEN-F or really any other electronic viewfinder on the market today. And while the 16:9 aspect ratio is fine when you’re shooting video, if you want to frame a still image at 4:3, the image in the already-small EVF gets even smaller.

Even with the flawed EVF, you’re still getting a lot of camera for $700. In fact the GX85, despite a couple shortcomings, is one of the year’s best Micro Four Thirds camera releases.

  • Wedding video I just finished up with the GX85 as my A camera

  • I found my GX80 used for 300€ and it's a major upgrade from my G6. The things i've noticed up until now - the IBIS is really nice, and the screen is also really improved compared to my G6. It makes working with shallow depth of field way easier! I did not check out 4k yet. But really well spend 300 bucks.

We ask, therefore, that Panasonic introduce a firmware update to include a "log" profile or a Cinelike-V or Cinelike-D profile to Panasonic GX85,
