Could you attach your settings? Are your settings running stable on your sandisk 45MB/s also on grass or trees?
  • This topic is about testing encoder setting systematically.
Not about finding "best", "stable", etc settings. It is too soon for this.
it is already very hard to read and almost impossible to understand for any new tester.
  • @vitaliy

ok, but how can I test codec settings, if everytime appears a card writing error on detailed scenes?
  • @daidalos

Great job - keep it coming! What do you think: Is 1080p50/60p possible?
  • my testings had been on focus 720p in several testings streets, reported sometimes as interim results for information, additionly tested with impact to other modes
1080p not on focus now - for me
card writing errors do not proceed since you init camera with little shot of 1080i (if ES4 is 29) or 24p (no need of ES4-changing) and do not check any AVCHD FPS item in PTool, respectivly not tested AVCHD FPS with ES4=29 settings; just other settings are in moment focused
  • Anyone tried to lower the bitrate? How does it affect the quality?
  • Is there anyway to fix the vertical scale in Streamparser, it would make it a lot easier for comparisons
  • I have tested ES3 720p.
0011 - let's 1080p24 go on but 720p50 "hangs" and needs pulling out the battery
0110 -neither 1080p24 or 720p50 works. Camera "clicks" on 720p but no file
    0111 - same as 0011.

  • @swen24 @EOSHD
While my Gh2 gets here, would you consider trying a setting with just the Progressive mode checked. (Not 50p but 25P)
    ES4

    0000 1001 (9) 720p
    0000 1000 (8) 1080p24
    0001 0111 (17) 1080i

    0001 1111 - 31 (If you XOR 720P or 1080p with 1080i)
    0000 1111 - 15 (Just last 4 bits XOR)
  • I want to repeat that right now this is waste of time.
You need to use StreamParser as well as Elecard StreamEye.
Carefully plan testing (this means installing camera on tripod and shooting same scene).
  • prejudice. I would like to know if there is a tutorial for PTool 3.60d, how to use it and how to make the changes. I am in Italy I have GH2 and I would like to know how to put the new firmware.
  • 720p50: prepared settings from 3.60 tests, goes with B-frames, I-Frames keep at high level except 2 short times, GOP:3
also with 720p25 - no exceptions, have no daylight now, footage with lowlight

but still card crashes, must initiate with short 1080-footage

  • can't download your 'seti.zip' file
  • same here
  • You're saying it won't download or you can't open it? I just renamed it zip because the server wouldn't take an ini extension. If you can download it, just rename it seti.ini and it should open (on a pc at least).
  • just download the file and change the extension to .ini
  • Great Kae and great settings.

  • Thanks kae.

24H works fine, but FSH and FH let the camera reboot and then there´s the red disk for writing but nothing happens. no reaction of any button, so I have to remove the battery.
  • @Vitaliy

There are some different opinions flying around about the importance of b-frames at the 720p50/60 mode. I don´t know much about it but what i´ve read is that b-frames are important for showing better motion. Can you explain in some simple words whether it is more diserable having b-frames in this 720p50/60 mode or not in terms of getting a better IQ?
  • I believe we should concentrate on "Patches for testers -> AVCHD research -> Encoder Setting x" in order to get working 1080p (other than 1080p24).

"AVCHD Movie Mode -> AVCHD FPS -> 1080p Progressive" enables progressive mode on 1080p but signal comming to encoder is still interlaced. I believe we should play with these values and see if we can enable P-stream from sensor.

BTW, I think B-frames are good and so is long-GOP. I agree with Vitaliy that playing with short-GOP is meaningless. Utilizing high-bitrate on long-GOP B-frame AVCHD stream will yield better image than effectively maiming it by removing B-frames and using very short GOP. Yes, the bitrate wll be high but codec gets very inefficient and is basically similar to MJPEG.

    Regards,
  • I posted it under another topic, but that got closed, so I am posting it here.

Just looking at default values on these encoder settings, I assume

    encoder setting 1 720p + encoder setting 2 720p + encoder setting 3 720p = encoder setting 4 720p

    encoder setting 1 1080i + encoder setting 2 1080i + encoder setting 3 1080i = encoder setting 4 1080i

This pattern, however, doesn't fit with 1080p.

Has anyone tried "Encoder setting 1 720p" from default "2" to "3" and encoder setting 4 720p from "9" to "10"?

Or am I completely off here?
  • What is the current state of research on the 1080i->1080p patch? Has this topic been abandoned?
  • @bdegazio
Don't see how it related to encoder settings research. Use PTool topic next time.
As for patch - patch works, as this is AVCHD encoder patch and encoder produce quite normal 25p picture.
But input to the encoder is not progressive mode, this is why you see garbage on bottom half.
