GH5 Panasonic camera, from anticipation to love or hate

  • Yes, I've started to shoot in 6K mode (well, 5K 16:9) on my GH5 too. As you say, it allows for a 30% punch in/ zoom and still gives you a clean 4K master. However I do notice that it uses a lot more battery power to do so. I'm getting less running time out of the larger GH5 batts than I did out of the smaller GH2/G80 type batts in their respective cameras for 4K output.

  • Just used the GH5 on a project and the 10 bit rocks.

  • The burst of GH5 is up to 12i/s in RAW full def, I would love to see a 24i/s in RAW FHD or RAW 2K in a future firmware update. 10 bits rocks, true, but RAW offer so much latitude when you love to grade. Does the 12 bits RAW is a limitation (compare to the 14 bits of the GH5s) due to LSI, sensor… or do you think it's a choice ?

  • Does anyone know if it is possible to load a complete custom set to the GH5 from a disk? Like if you were going to rent a set of them and then set them up quickly all the same way? Ideally from a phone but a card would be fine. Tx.

  • @Dr Dave I think this link will help you.

  • @G3550D Thanks, at 2:30 or so he shows the save restore feature. Good to know.

  • Panasonic will launch a new major firmware update for the GH5 / GH5S / G9 cameras. No info yet about the possible improvements…

Small rumors are that we can see external raw recording via HDMI using Atomos recorders.

Internal ProRes RAW most probably wont happen.

  • GH5 Firmware Version 2.6 Upcoming

  • Are we not getting the animal focus/joystick things that the GH5s and G9 are getting?

I would love to be able to be Caf face detect mode and just tap the joystick left or right to tell the cam which face to focus on and track. Tapping the screen is a bit clunky and my thumb tends to be right around the joystick when shooting handheld.

I've used Sony camcorders that have this and it's really handy. I've been hoping for this for ages and it seems so close....

  • Disappointing update for GH5 owners.. and I'd imagine GH5 owners outnumber those who bought the G9 and GH5s cameras, doesn't seem like a good move Panasonic.

  • Can anyone recommend a good electronic adapter for GH5 that works with EF mount lenses and doesn't have the speed booster glass? Looking for just a straight adapter that can communicate with the lens and still autofocus (at least in photo mode). Picked up the Viltrox model and it doesn't actually work. Maybe I got a lemon and just need to exchange it? I have the focal reducer version (EF M2) and that one works great. But the EF M1 just gives error messages on every EF lens I've tried it on. It says lens isn't properly connected. FW updates didn't help either. Any advice based on actual personal experience is appreciated.

  • Maybe the reason the GH5 isn't getting everything is because of a hardware limitation. The G9 and GH5s is a bit newer.

The "AF-ON: Near Shift" feature would have definitely came in handy for a shoot I was tasked to do last month.

  • Also if a GH6 is due, they won't want to give away too many new features to existing GH5 owners.

  • I suppose a free full log profile would have been useful, but as I don't use autofocus, the new AF modes wouldn't have made any difference to me anyway.
