4K has BIG ISSUES - 1.6x crop
EOS M50 will be first APS-C compact camera in the Canon lineup to shoot 4K.
Are you saying that there is a 1.6x crop on top of the already 1.6x crop APS-C sensor? If not, what is the problem?
Yes, 1.6x is crop from APS-C sensor.
@Vitaliy_Kiselev Yes I know, but what is the problem with the crop on this camera in 4k mode? Is there an additional crop, or does it use the full sensor?
I used bad wording, it is additional 1.6x crop.
I'm very disappointed in this camera. No uhd P50 mode, only 8 bit 4:2:0, lower bit rate (unless this is h265). I'm waiting to checkout Canon xc20. This camera needs a hack, unfortunately.
This camera is US$780 body only.
You could buy nearly four Z Cam E1 for that amount.
Or you could buy a Nikon D7500 for this (just went on sale btw, dropped down to this price. Well, only a hundred dollars more: https://nikonrumors.com/2018/04/11/new-low-price-refurbished-nikon-d7500-camera-for-899.aspx/. Seems the D7500 is not only a much better stills camera, but a better video image too).
Or you could buy a Panasonic G7 with a lens and still have hundreds spare. Or get a Panasonic G85 with a lens for only a hundred dollars more.
Whichever way I look at this then the M50 doesn't make sense. If Canon slashes its price in half then we could start talking.

It perfectly make sense, as in real life if you use AF in video it is much better than everything mentioned.
My understanding is that Dual Pixel AF system is disabled in 4K. Big crop factor. IQ clearly worse than the G7. But, Canon is crawling along....they are just a step or two away.
It still works for prefocus, in 1080p it works (90% of real work).

Just 90% won't notice.
As for Canon. They just jumped too far with AF, and not counted on fast slowdown of LSI progress and so fast design price rise.
Review
Canon made lots of noise about the camera's 4K capability, but "forgot" to mention several important caveats that render it at best difficult to use, at worse almost impossible. As the first Canon mirrorless camera to offer 4K recording, the EOS M50 is simply a disappointment. If you only want or need to shoot in 1080p, though, things look a lot better, and combined with the excellent stills quality, the EOS M50 becomes a serious proposition again, especially given the surprisingly affordable price-tag.
