FEEDBACK ASKED: Working as a camerawoman and editor on music videos

  • Nice images in challenging conditions :-)

  • This has been my next challenge. Something I used to try to avoid: filming at night! But now I'm working with a new hack. Moon T8, which is my nr. 1 now. I've been able to push the ISO till 1600 in some situations. It's not perfect but I am very much satisfied + what matters most to me is, a happy client and an audience who enjoys it.

Any feedback is welcome of course!

    Cheers,

    D.

  • Still curious to know what you think of my latest video! Any constructive feedback?

  • Hi all!

I'm posting a new video in this topic, so you can see my progress and give feedback. I'm quickly getting the hang of editing and already have a routine. Also for filming and grading.

    My next challenge will be:

    • More in-depth color grading
    • Working with Davinci Resolve
    • Shooting at night
    • Building better storyline

I still find it difficult to build a solid storyline also because of the type of projects I do, mostly are low budget. So I improvise as much as possible.

What do you suggest to make a more challenging storyline on a low budget? Would love to hear your tips.

    Cheers,

    D.

  • Shot this one, handheld indoor with no additional lighting. Had some difficulty with the grading and cleaning up the grain. But I think the result is pretty ok! What do you guys think? Feedback? Comments?

  • Hey @mrbill! Thank you for your great feedback. Interesting documentary as well, never hear of her before. I can kinda relate to some of her views.

    Cheers,

    D.

  • This promo directors work might interest you - part of a series I edited for UK transmission

  • It's great. Like the random stuff in there as well as the performance footage - it's what gives the artist (and your promo) character. Your shot contrast is working really well too

  • Hi! I have some new work up. Wonder what you guys think of it and if you have any feedback.

    What I tried doing different in this video is;

    • Make a more interesting storyline
    • Wider angles and full body shots
    • Heavier color grading

    Cheers,

    D.

  • Shot this one in late 2014. It was pretty much a guerrilla shoot. Used the same lenses and gear on this one too.

  • I forgot to ask @caveport what type editing of techniques or camera motion would you recommend to make it visually more interesting for an audience?

    Cheers,

    D

  • Hi @caveport thanks for your feedback, I don't take them as harsh at all. (:

I must state though I find much of it, to be more taste than constructive feedback. But! I agree that film making is a never visual ending journey + thinking about the audience as well. I am not planning to give up any day soon!

    Cheers,

    D

  • New video comments: editing style does not suit the song. It looks like you did not storyboard the video. The slower edited sections are nice and work better. The fast cuts/glitch edits are unnecessary. Too many different styles in the colour grading and colour effects. Pick a style for the video and use it in a consistent way. I don't mean to be harsh, trying to help you focus on the important things. Golden rule is to make the video with the audience experience in mind. Don't please yourself, please the audience. Take them on a visual journey. Find some videos you like and analyse then to see why they please you. Use them as starting points for your own ideas. Film making is a never ending journey, don't give up! xxx

  • @stucameraman1 that's ok! Thank you very much, feedback noted. (:

  • Hi sorry i was at work and was reading posts and working and reading and working... i couldnt play the vids due to my works internet firewall was trying for ages... Ive just now watched the vids and they are very nice...very clinical lighting wise, clear...the 2nd video reminds me of the lighting style of the scifi series HELIX with the f2 or f1.6 prime lenses (watch it in HD). overall very well shot!

  • @stucameraman1 Great purchase. I don't mean to sound rude, but this is not post related. As I posted this to ask feedback on the videos I've posted. (:

  • I recently bought a Samyang 10mm F2.8 to use with my GH4 and GH2 and im very happy with the amount of light it takes in and the semi shallow depth of field. It does NOT give a fish eye look just a very nice wide angle. Being very sharp you will need focus peaking ON if shooting in 4k on a GH4 or with the great Hacks on the GH2. I was researching using older Cine lenses around the 12.5mm f2 range but couldn't find any in my price range. So i took the plunge and bought the Samyang from Parks Cameras central london. Also if you want to add a bit of production value you could always shoot A N A M O R P H I C! My personal choice but very tricky with hitting focus! check out my recent 4k Carl Zeiss Anamorphic test

  • 12mm lenses - Samyang/Rokinon 12mm cine lens looks great and shouldn't break the bank. My next purchase for sure

  • I've recently finished a new video. Where some of you're feedback can be found in.

    Enjoy.

PS: more feedback is welcome of course.

  • That's a good one! Thanks for the tip @jamesjjs :)

  • Great job @dlzn beautiful imagery..

  • Or an rj speedbooster (had good experience with this one - http://www.ebay.com/itm/RJ-Nikon-F-G-reducer-speed-booster-turbo-adapter-m43-mft-GH4-GF6-GX1-EM5-BMPCC-/141330102387?pt=FR_Photo_cam%C3%A9scopes_Bagues_d_adaption&hash=item20e7ee3873) - coupled with a cheap 14 or 16mm lens - you get a cheap wides and about a stop brighter!

  • any 12mm lens recomendations btw? @mrbill
