  • @philiplipetz Well said.. It's the same sensor manufacturer plus it would be smart of them to keep the sensor the same size as the BMCC, everybody would of cancel there BMCC Pre-orders and jump on this little Beast.. It makes perfect business sense. To me the S16 size Sensor is just fine, they made it 1/3 the price of the BMCC with all the goodies. Same 1080p resolution, this is a gift having ProRess 422 & RAW in such a small body.

  • Because this sensor is only a slice from the BMCC sensor that is smaller than m4/3, and because with a known sensor they could reuse the BMCC software and lower the cost of the camera.

  • @Flacnvinyl, my guess is they went smaller because of heat and processing for such a small body and SDXC cards. It could also be in order to differentiate it from their other models.

  • Have they explained why they chose to go with the Super 16mm sensor instead of a M43 sensor?

  • Exact the same Cinegon i had too ;( I sold it last year! The silver Cinegons would not cover the s16.

  • @Tungee78: The Schneider Cinegon 10mm f1.8 will cover the sensor of the BMPCC. It is designed for 1" sensors with 16mm diameter. There are different versions of that lens with different coverages. I had one, but sold it unfortunatly. This is the one I had:

  • Tested a Kern Switar 25mm f1.4 today, a 16mm lens with very good reputation. Other than the 10mm, this one covers S-16 without vignetting. It is very sharp in the center, but outside of the 16mm area it get's quite soft. But it's so tiny and well made, I really love it!

I don't have the 16mm for testing, it may just be close to vignetting by a very tight margin.

But you might be better of with those Tevidons made for 1". After all, they were made by Zeiss (east) to spy on their fellow citizens…

  • Schneider Cinegon wont cover also ;(

  • 8-16 is amazing in gh2.

  • Has anyone used the Sigma 8-16 on the GH2 and would it translate well to the Pocket Cam?

  • I use to compare the digital image age with automobile early years from the end of XIX century and begining of XX century.

All we live today is development, development... great thing is things are going fast.

When sdxc cards become 2TB and fast, RAW cameras will start to pop up from big manufacturers with big sensors for cheap... the standard for video/cine production to the masses.

BMD is very pioneer in what they are doing.

  • Now tested the Tevidon 1:2 / 10mm and I can confirm that it covers S-16 with a safe margin. Distortion is pretty low, the center is very sharp, corners only so-so.

Please don't battle with me for the 16 and 25 on Ebay ;-)

  • BMPCC will have similar 1080p resolution as the BMCC, sensor is from the same company..

  • BMPCC is said to be of the same family of sensor as the BMCC, so this may be the nexus link between the two different sensors, same maker.

Edit: @fatpig, not sure if the specs exceed the BMPCC or the features the BMPCC offers are not utilising the sensor specs, if indeed the CIS_1910f is the proposed BMPCC sensor? I am not that technical with specs, etc. Interesting times we live (or dream, within a dream)...

  • seems to be a lot more performant than the BMPCC sensor, dont you think?

  • If not already mentioned, I ask, is this perhaps the BMPCC sensor? http://www.fairchildimaging.com/files/data_sheet_cis_1910f_0.pdf

  • I've decided that I'll preorder the bmpcc. I've never pre-ordered before, so I'm unfamiliar with the logistics.

B&H website says expected availability is July 25. Does that listed date usually change based in the # of preorders? (If B&H has too many orders, will they update that expected date?)

In other words, am I better off preordering from a less popular store since 90% of the commenters on blogs say they preordered from B&H and I don't want to be #9999 on the B&H list if I can be #50 on another good store's list, assuming they also get a supply of the first shipment from BMD.

  • I'm really debating on preordering this camera. But I might invest my money in two Voigtländer lenes the 17.5 and the upcoming 44mm.

I wonder if they could make a sensor that is actually a MFT size, maybe next time.

The 4k also looks good and canon glass seems to be much cheaper. Hmmm decisions decisions.

My number 1# reason is for the ProRes I wonder how ProRes on this will stack up to hacked Gh2 intra footage. I will use raw occasionally but mostly for personal projects that don't have deadlines.

  • If you don't need very wide and already have a few good manual lenses for MFT, it might be reasonable to get one or two cheap 1" TV lenses for wide, shoot on the Pocket for a while and sell it cheap when the next gen is available.

  • I still say that the way to think of the Pocket Cinema for Normal to Telephoto use and leave the wide shots for another camera. It's end up being cheaper to use another camera for establishing wide shots or landscape shots. Heck it seems to me that a GoPro Hero3 would be perfect for that use or a GH with wide angle or a cheap Nikon D5200 would be good.

  • I see, thanks. Looking forward to seeing some video.

As for lenses, I'll stick w/ manual MFT. I'm not investing in c-mount or s16.

  • @TGDude

Since its a cropped part of the same 2.5K sensor the look and colors should be the same, but the grain should increase a little and the sharpness should decrease a little. The aliasing and moire should be less if not non existent due to the 1-1 photocyte to pixel ratio. All that technical stuff aside I'm sure they will look very close and most people probably won't be able to tell the difference.

  • How much are you willing to spend on lenses? After you answer this, then you can decide which one to get. Then later after BM abandons the S16 sensor, what are you gonna do with your c-mount and s16 lenses? Wrap them up in candy wrapper and give them out?
