I've tested my Settings with: SanDisk Extreme SDHC Class 10 32 GB -> No Spawning at 4GB, recording stops... SanDisk Extreme SDHC UHS-I 32 GB -> 4GB Spawning works...!
Both using the exactly some modified Firmware. UHS-I looks like: And the normal Class 10 looks like: ...except, that im using 32GB @ 30 MB/s Versions...!
Test it with this; http://crystalmark.info/software/CrystalDiskMark/index-e.html And your card reader, and see how fast it really is. 45MB/sec is faster than most camera's can write. It's also faster than USB 2.0, I believe, can read/write. I'm not saying these camera's are a problem-I'm saying they are misleading people into believing that they will get 30, or 45mb/sec read/write speeds. The truth is, you probably won't come near that.
Yes, they suck!!! Here is a comparison I did between the old Extreme III 30mb/sec cards, and the new UHS-I; "I know some of you are trying to find the fastest memory cards for your Panasonic GH1s and 2's, as well as some other video camera's.
So, I recently placed an order from a major online retailer for 2 Sandisk 32GB SDHC Extreme III, 30MB/Sec memory cards. The picture online showed the older style memory cards, without the HD Video, or UHS-I printed on the card, and that's what I wanted.
What I got, where the UHS-I, HD Video memory cards. I was pissed. Now why?? Well, there is something that Sandisk probably does not want you to be aware of. Their newer, Extreme SDHC UHS-I cards are slower, than the older Extreme III cards. And not by a little, but by a lot.
Keep in mind that UHS-I was developed to increase speed in devices capable of using this new feature/memory controller. I don't have one of those camera's. I also don't have USB 3.0-so this new feature is lost on me.
So, here's what I did; I decided to test the "new" cards, against an older, Sandisk 16GB Extreme III, 30MB/Sec card. And, just for fun, I also tested a much older Kingston 16GB Class 4 card.
The card reader was a newly bought Sandisk ImageMate(model 199A), which is optimized for reading Sandisk cards. The computer is a PC running Vista 64. I used Crystal Diskmark, as my bench test, running 5 tests, each with 100mb. Each card was formatted in the card reader with standard sectors in FAT32 before the test. I should also note, that my brand new card reader died, shortly after performing the tests-so it's being returned, as well as the "new" 32GB cards.
The results; Sandisk 16GB Extreme III SDHC 30MB/sec card;
Sequential-Read=29.02MB/Sec Write=26.26MB/Sec
Sandisk 32GB Extreme SDHC UHS-I
Sequential-Read=20.89MB/Sec Write=19.41MB/Sec
Kingston 16GB Class 4 SDHC
Sequential-Read=20.90MB/Sec Write=12.28
And, just for fun, the read write speed of my SD800 Panasonic video camera, used as a memory card reader, with the 16GB ExtremeIII cards was; Read=16MB/Sec Write=14MB/sec.
So, why are the "new" memory cards not performing at 30MB/Second like the old cards?? Good question. Why am I paying for the new UHS-I technology, when clearly, a Kingston Class 4 card is nearly the same speed, and I'm sure a Kingston Class 6 card would be identical.
Keep in mind that the class rating is a minimum, and it's normal for most cards to exceed this. Also keep in mind that USB2.0 is limited in it's speed as well.
I am returning the "new" Sandisk cards tomorrow, along with the broken memory card reader. I will probably purchase the cheapest class 10 cards I can find."
It will show if the card is a fake (eg. lower size and just reprogrammed to report the larger size, meaning data gets corrupted as you fill it up), and also the average read/write times. It completely fills the card and then verifies the contents. I just had a fake 'Class 6 32GB' microSD card, that was actually a 1GB Class2 card. Ebay is flooded with these (domestically and overseas). It came with a bad quality SD adapter, the card had to be forced into it, and it still didn't work - and apparently the genuine Sandisks don't even ship with an adapter.
Bear in mind that the speeds may be limited by the card reader - I have a fast Sandisk reader that gives me the full speed of my 32GB 30MB/s Extremes, but many card readers crap out around 7MB/s.
I'm sure a lot of sellers are fully aware they're selling fakes - but the reprogramming is a nasty trick, many sellers put a few small files on the card and it seems to work, but they don't fill it up enough to discover it's been reprogrammed - and even if they do they just assume that particular card is bad, and sell it as 'faulty' on Ebay.
If you look on B&H they have a deal where if you buy 2 or more 16GB cards they are significantly cheaper than you get anywhere else. You can also see that there are 2 versions on their site, One I believe is a newer generation with a change in decal to accommodate all of the SDHC camcorders as it displays an hour time like the mini-dv tapes, making it easier for consumers to make buying decisions based on size.
The seller didn't repond to me until I reported the issue to ebay resolution center. I sent the package to the address he told me. That was 2 weeks ago. From DC to NYC. USPS failed to deliver on June 2nd.The seller must have been notified multiple times to pick it up. Never picked up. eBay kept asking me if the issue was resolved. I waited and waited... but gave up. I explained the situation, and it was escalated today, and eBay customer support determined to give me a full refund.
Small note to readers of this topic. >"I escalated the issue, and ebay gave me a full refund including shipping cost." Do not do it, unless cruicial. Because 98-99% of sellers are good people and something can go wrong or you think that it went wrong. Communicate with seller and calm down.
Why can't you verified it? There's a nice service for Sandisk users on their site to check if the card is real. I did it in the past with a card from eBay and it was fake... I just had to send a pictures of the card...
Only after I opened up a case against the ebay seller, he accepted the full refund request. It took him 4 days to respond. He might be selling genuine Sandisk cards, but the slow response didn't give me good assurance. At least I'm not giving him any negative feedback since I can't really verify it.
Reference Tesselator's two SDHD Class 10 Extreme photos above: Called Sandisk tech support and inquired about them and the person I talked to stated that the "HD Video" version's performance is the same as the other. The "HDVideo" card is new and supposed to utilize the latest software. I asked him which card he would use and he stated either one as the performance is the same.
Hmmm... this is getting interesting. I got no response from the ebay seller and opened up a case against them through ebay resolution center. If no response from them, ebay will give me a full refund. Since I don't know where to ship it, I might just keep the card until they respond. I have little doubt that the seller has been selling counterfeit goods.
I did check up on the german amazon page, and find both versions available, the prices are significantly different, and the technical specifications are confusing.... at the "HD video" marked card is specified at 20 MB/s even the printing says 30 MB/s.... yes confusing... too many employees being " overeducated-nonskilled" and spending too much time on facebook and in other forums instead of caring about the work they get payed for.... ;-)
