GH2 is out of stock in most shops
  • It seems that B&H, Adorama, and Amazon have discontinued selling the GH2.

  • Well, one member here got the new one from Samy's I posted about above for $679. I've noticed a trend from conversations which is hopeful. A good number of folks have GH2's that they've almost NEVER used. That can be a good thing down the road.

  • The price of GH2 on ebay is the rise it seems, a used GH2 body was sold for $600 recently

  • Sadly for me I was waiting for the price to drop. Next thing I knew it was listed as discontinued at BH. I ended up buying a used one on ebay for the same price as a new one...hah.

  • Development:

Last week I put a GH2 on hold w/Samy's Camera. The price is $679.00 new body only. Yesterday, a friend sold me his brand new never used same for $550 (I tried to talk him into keeping it. He said he never used it.) Meaning, the on hold Samy's GH2, will be on hold until tomorrow, and I won't be buying it, unless I'm really crazy.

If anyone here wants it, you can shoot me a PM and I'll give your the order number and sales reps name, so you can have what is perhaps one of the last reliable dealer new GH2 camera's around.

  • @neededandwanted What you said!

I swore I wasn't going to buy a GH3 because of the consumer warranty....but did (and I bought a 3rd party warranty) because it does do a lot the GH2 doesn't. The Hacked GH2 is still the winner right now IMO, but I'm convinced Vitally will (and I suspect already has) hack it and it will be heads above the GH2.

It's a wait and see game now!

    I did keep my 2 GH2's though.

  • Let's put it this way with my GH2 and contemplating buying a GH3 I figured I was fine, liked the GH2 better, etc. When my producer offered to buy me a GH3...let's just say my opinion changed somewhat haha.

I don't claim to understand Panasonic's roadmap at all. GF1 was a hit, so they followed it with 5 (!) generations of successors that threw away a bit more soul with each rev. GH3 (which I don't own yet so naturally it's PHAYLE) seems like a better GH2 all around but it's really a different beast entirely, a much larger and heavier Canon DSLR style body. To me the beauty of the GH2, which even unhacked gives great image, is its small, lightweight stealthiness. It is absolutely a prosumer camera, the best of the breed. GH3 to me is a pro camera, which despite the panting of the spec rap video crowd "about to shoot my first feature so wuts the best patch", is not always the best choice. Give me a GH2 and a few Canon FDs in a Domke satchel any day over a C300 and all the assorted support crap that comes along with it for even basic operation.

Until we see a GH3 hacked, we are not going to know its full capabilities or limitations. And until Panny makes enough of them to sell, and gets a chance to do their own initial firmware updates we can't really do much more than complain about SD card access door problems.

One thing we have learned is that contrary to the fact that we all keep telling each other that we are a minority and Panasonic really designs and sells the top of the line cameras to Harriet Housecoat and Joe Sixpack for vacation photos, this time it was pro and semipro users that snapped them up. At $1300 without a lens, and selling out original production based on anticipation, rather than recommendations and seeing them in stores, I think WE bought all of them.

Which is just as well, since they seemed to have listened to what WE wanted, and incorporated most of our wish list.

But since all of the GH3s are gone, and Panny has admitted that they aren't making any more GH2s, what ARE they making? Are we just waiting for the slow boat to get here?

In the meantime, I have two "extra" GH2s and I'll start the bidding at one MILLion dollars...

  • Yup, keep telling yourselves the hacked GH2 is better than the GH3. Just like how the hacked GH1 was better than the GH2. And please do pipe up, Lone Guy Claiming To Have Bought a GH3 but returned it cause it amn't as filmick as his Driftwooden GH2. You and Lone Guy Who Claims Hacked GH1 Mo' Filmick Than Film Its Own Dadburned Self should get together, see where it goes.

Anyway, thank god for things that never change, like the noon day sun, mint juleps in spring, and overheatedgeekboyfora auto-dis of the New and As-Yet-Unacquired.

  • The GH2 has a lot going for it that the GH3 doesn't quite have. It has similar quality to the GH3 (better in some areas), it's smaller, it has multi-aspect sensor, less moire, Francis Ford Coppola's approval, and of course, the hack.

  • Probably GH2 is even than better the GH3

  • Actually the GH3 has not taken off in a big way. I know people are still looking for a GH2. I put my set on sale just to test the market. People were actually interested at $900, body alone. Looks like we have a scarce commodity in our hands.

  • I noticed that Amazon.com had set a "buy" price as of March 16th of $600. Yes, Amazon is offering to buy my GH2s for $600USD each

So, buying bunch GHs bodies on sale and reselling them to Amazon could be good investment.

  • Something weird happened with GH2 prices today. I noticed that Amazon.com had set a "buy" price as of March 16th of $600. Yes, Amazon is offering to buy my GH2s for $600USD each.

AND Amazon has only one new one for sale -- for over $1,800! Used ones with and without lenses are going for $799 to $2500.

So, all of the new GH2s have been sold and the GH3 remains sold out. I feel like I am in the desert with the last case of bottled water.

  • I bought a used GH2, Pany Battery, Generic Battery, 14-42 lens, 45-200 lens, cheap 8 GB SD card and a camera case for $500 about 4 months ago so I'd say yep.

  • Do you think the average price of a used or new GH2 will rise slightly due to the scarcity?

  • If anyone is looking for a used one, there's a few on Craigslist in LA used right now. I think one is going for $500 for the body.

  • Chatting with a Panasonic rep at wppi the other day- it's official- they're done making the gh2! Moving to support the gh3. Which is dumb because thy cant make them fast enough to keep them in stock everywhere. The life cycle of cameras is so stupidly short these days. When did the gh2 come out? 2 yrs now?

  • @jasantana, yer I was rather annoyed about it. Unfortunately it was from an online store, they are asking me if I would like to wait for the GH3, so I'm going to see how could of a deal they can do me.

  • I just grabbed last month new GH2 body with small OIS lens for bargain price :-) glad I did it

  • @Sw1tchBlad3s, Oh, that would be a drag. Was it Samy's?

  • I found out the hard way, I ordered one the other day, the website said it was in stock, they even took my money when I ordered it. Three days later and hadn't heard anything regarding shipping so I emailed the site I purchased it from, and they contacted me back saying that it was discontinued.

  • I just learned that Samy's Camera has a few GH2's in stock. (That's weird, I ordered on today, and they said they had a few in stock, now I see they're "backordered" again as was the case yesterday. Hmm... )

  • @pundit, does starting to record them using a remote trigger create the iso bug? I didn't realize that. I believe if you search the forums Dr.Dave has written about his 3d work with 2x gh2s and has advice symultareously triggering record.

  • I bought two more GH2 bodies from B&H when they were $499. It was obvious the GH2 was nearing the end and B&H wanted to move stock to make way for the GH3. Owning a three cam setup may seem like overkill under normal circumstances but for the price I just couldn't pass it up.

Now I just need to figure out away to remotely start and stop them recording simultaneously without invoking the ISO bug! ;)
