Kowa USA - Torrance , CA ..... Road trip anyone?
  • There's a lot of talk of how SLR Magic is a rebranded Kowa CCTV lens. These are links to Kowa USA dealers and Headquarters:
    http://www.kowa-usa.com/frontend/contact.asp
    http://www.kowa-usa.com/frontend/store.asp (select opto-electronic)
http://www.kowa-usa.com/frontend/proddisp.asp?co=10000380 -these models, 1" sensor lenses

The dealer in Kyle, TX is closest to me....it's 3:00am as I type this....assuming he has some in stock, and he lets me come down and video it, the soonest I could have a video up is around 30hrs...IF I had a c mount adapter. So, realistic best case is 3-4 days... after ordering a c-mount adapter off Amazon.

Could somebody beat me too the punch? :)

You can try to contact Dan K on twitter. He made a trip to buy these lenses in Singapore to try only to find out:

    1) You need to special order it 2) It cost double the price of our lens at over $1K 3) The store manager told him it would not work and there will be focus issues and the mount won't fit and even if it does it will not cover the sensor.

There is no need to make the trip. Just tell them your image sensor is 17.3mmx13mm on the GH2 and they will be able to tell you the 1" lens (12.8mmx 9.6mm) will never cover the sensor at 12mm angle of view. Our 12mm 1.6 is designed with the GH2 multi aspect ratio sensor in mind. There are 4/3 Machine Vision lenses BUT there is no electronic shutter mechanism inside of a Machine Camera and there is also no lens mount in the way. You will need to take your mFT lens mount off and also sand off your electronic shutter to have a large enough opening to even FIT 4/3 machine vision lenses into the GH2. Last but not least, the AF-100 has a built-in ND filter that does not allow lenses going into the lens mount. Lenses that can "fit" into the GH2 does not necessary work with the AF-100. The 12mm 1.6 is compatible with the AF-100 and will not cause any damages.

However, if you still wish to make the trip it would probably be good for all as you can prove on all the points above.

  • Sorry. I totally dropped the ball on this one! I'll try to make it down this week and report back.

  • We have worked really hard on this lens and we really hope the bashing of the 12mm 1.6 lens as a machine vision lens will end. We read some feel that it is a 8mm with telephoto adapter. Some say it is a 25mm with wide angle adapter. Some say it is the 12.5 CCTV featured in EOSHD website http://www.eoshd.com/content/tag/computar-12-5mm

As you can see in that demo if you crop the GH2 sensor to 2.35:1 you will get slight vignetting only for the 12.5mm CCTV lens. However, our image coverage is way beyond that because we designed the lens from ground up due to feedback of mFT photographers. If anyone continue to buy these lenses for mFT they will just keep on wasting their money on lenses that do not cover the GH2 multi aspect sensor.

We recently received many emails asking how our lens will perform on the BMCC mFT mount with 2.3x crop and we made a demo photo. We added the mFT frame of the OM-D and the multi aspect GH2 frame as well and you can see it is clearly not even close to the CCTV alternatives on the market.

A short note to add. Some say it seems the lens almost cannot cover the sensor area. Actually the crops are suppose to be lower positioned. Helge from 3D-Kraft.de bought an adapter online to try our mFT lens on his NEX-7. The problem you see is due to adapter alignment and the opening is not perfectly centered.

I hope this is clear for everyone and we get some credit for the hard work put into the SLR Magic 12mm 1.6 lens.

  • @P4INKiller I think we all forgot. @TheMonk did you get the lens and if so, how is it? If not or you didn't get it could you say why por favor?

  • So, no follow-up?

  • @zcream @CRFilms #FCGU

Ordered the c-mount. Unfortunately, it'll get here right before Thanksgiving. I'll knock it out asap when I get back. I'll call Kowa and see if I can get on someone's good side to see what magic I can work!
  • @TheMonk , sorry I forgot what this thread was originally about. Don't think Kowa has F0.95 lenses. I was originally interested in the 1" machine vision lenses, specifically these:

    http://www.kowa-usa.com/frontend/proddisp.asp?co=10000380

They range from 8mm to 75mm and are all F1.4. WAY cheaper than the XC 4/3 lenses, but any lense they'd let you put on, go for it.
  • $9 from Ebay... Maybe cheaper!
  • @CRFilm Buy the cheapest c-mount adapter off ebay. It will screw on over at least a couple of threads but not all the way.
Dont worry, it will only affect focusing distance, not the sensor coverage. Take a pic of anything and post it here so we can check coverage.
  • @TheMonk I have no Idea what adapter because I have no C Mount lenses. I'd like to see the F0.95 lenses. If they fit or can be made to fit, those would be the cheapest lenses of that speed.
  • @CRFilms

I just got my GH2 so I'm revisiting this thread. I looked up the Kowa location and it turns out that they are literally up the street from me.

What C mount would you recommend?
    Is this a good option?

Tell me what lenses you want me to test and I'll go down and shoot it as soon as I receive my adapter.
  • @TheMonk Yes, if you could make a video on it, that would be awesome.
  • Actually, I live in Torrance. I might be able to work something out if anyone is still interested.
  • I was under the impression that it was supposed to be an 8mm Kowa with a tele adapter.
  • The Kowa XC lenses could be the best(no one has tested) and ETC mode sucks on the Gh cameras, unless it high noon
  • @RandyCatanach Yeah, but with the GH2 you can do the crop, the GH1 can't that's why I'm interested in this. Even if somebody did the test and the 16mm=35mm worked, I probably wouldn't get one new. You can get a Canon FD 1.4 for around $80-90.

Or I'd try and shoot the moon and go for a Goyo F0.95 lens(what they say the Noktor 50mm is a rebadged version of). The 50mm is around $700 and the 25mm is under $400, but don't know if it will cover since it's also a 1" lens.

The Kowa 4/3" XC lenses are around $1000....so for that money, just go for a real Nokton. Under a certain $, I just want the cheapest that's good enough, but if I have to spend serious cash, then I'll go for the best.
  • @CRFilms hmm i think on a gh2 it wouldn't be as tall but would be wider. so that particular lens would still vignette but yeah, as @zcream pointed out i guess it's actually a different lens. might want to pursue the newer model lens still.
  • @RandyCatanach That is not the current Kowa 12.5mm lens. Its an older version from a vidicon camera. That about 30-40 years old.
    Look at the posters comments.
The new version of the 12.5mm lens - which has been discontinued too, may still cover the sensor.
  • I saw that, and that's a still pic...is that pic the same size as video? If so there's still 16mm, 25mm 35mm and 50mm all f1.4.
  • @Vitaliy_Kiselev CRFilms seemed quit convinced with the possibility so i thought i'd save him and any other users with the same thought some trouble
  • I doubt that here someone seriously thought that Kowa 12.5mm and Noktor are the same lens :-)
  • @CRFilms a quick google search of kowa 12.5mm and i came up with this.

    http://www.mu-43.com/f40/kowa-12-5mm-f1-4-c-mount-ep2-5027/

i understood what you were getting at by comparing the computar 8mm and 12mm (which everybody else couldn't seem to comprehend) but they're probably made for different size sensors.

sorry to disappoint but the slr magic lens isn't a kowa.
  • f2 is slow... when you are used to shooting with RPP and MasterPrimes also Lomos that act EXACTLY like masterprimes... I agree that the XC line should be tested but they are just WAY too much...
  • Firstly - F2 is not slow. Secondly - yeah we should test their new XC line.
