Bad design: Dyson vacuum cleaners and upright battery cleaners in general
  • Firm many years ago made the trend of making cheap plastic stuff with hi-tech look.

Nothing is made to last, nothing is fixable and any parts are very expensive.

As they had big profits it allowed them to use lot of presstitutes (and also ads).

  • Biggest Dyson design issue - location of HEPA filters

    image

As far as I understand such location allows to show better numbers during measurements (if you have very high load and very little leaks at input that is not realistic in real life).

Also such approach allows to reduce motor life.

Another reason can be that motor design requires high air load to function good and HEPA filter at output provide such load (similar to how closed case is used for acoustic speakers).

Note that Dyson motor design happened in the time of "we have more filters" marketing craze. And most of AC medium to top cleaners had 2-3 HEPA filters. To overcome inefficiency they just cranked up power, same as Dyson did in their AC cleaners. But for battery system they needed to remove one HEPA filter and it made more sense to remove filter at proper location to increase profits.

  • One more note on Dyson another marketing gimmick - multiple small holes making cyclones

Main idea - make filters replacement very rare.

It is another reason why Dyson can't put HEPA filter before motor as any other sane manufacturer.

Hence nice picture in reality looks such:

    image

    More videos on cyclones

Issues can be severe (as some models did not come with pre motor filter even!)

And Dyson itself in V10 materials showed that they play little role in real airflow

    image

As using such filter makes this gimmick fully useless, as it works only for tiny particles and totally useless for real dirt.

Proper washable HEPA filter is around 5x more efficient, 20x cheaper and prolong motor life around 3-4 times.

    Small video showing this gimmick

  • Samsung copied sick approach to filtering by Dyson

This happens as managers don't want to take any responsibility, as making copy of market leader fully offload such from them.

Takes not only overall general design, but also brush and lot of other things are very close.

Even bad idea of custom connector, wrongly placed, for charger is copies (but invented their own connector, idiots)

  • Dyson situation in Asia is bad

In China it is big Xiaomi machine and lot of other top manufacturers that attack Dyson on cordless upright market and already pushed it into top, elite sector, while recognition among middle class is falling steadily.

    In Korea

Samsung Electronics has formed a two-runner race with LG Electronics after outclassing Dyson, which broke a new ground in the Korean wireless vacuum cleaner market.

Samsung Electronics' market share for wireless vacuum cleaners has risen to the upper 40 percent range in the offline market. The company has formed a two-way race with LG Electronics, the No. 1 player, by beating Dyson, which once boasted a market share of more than 80 percent. LG Electronics' offline share is known to be close to 50 percent.

The size of Korea's premium wireless vacuum cleaner market has increased by 30 to 40 percent per year since Dyson entered the market in 2015. Annual sales are expected to surge to 1.8 million units in 2020 from 500,000 units in 2016.

When Dyson introduced the V6 model, a premium wireless vacuum cleaner with more than 100W in power, consumers were excited about the convenience, suction power and high-performance brushes of wireless vacuum cleaners. Between 2016 and 2017, Dyson's market share in Korea reached 80 percent. However, as Dyson lost ground due to after-sales service and quality issues, Korean brands began to expand their market shares. LG Electronics changed the game in 2018 by releasing the Code Zero with a water mop function. Samsung Electronics has also been rapidly expanding its market share since the release of the Samsung Jet in 2019.

Samsung Electronics' Jet Wireless Vacuum Cleaner enjoyed rapid growth in 2020. For six months from March in 2020, sales of Samsung jets have quadrupled compared with the same period of 2019. The popularity of the Jet model was elevated thanks to the automatic dust control system "Clean Station," which uses difference in air pressure inside to allow customers to easily empty dust from a dust can. LG and Dyson products do not have this function. The development team at Samsung focused on consumers' concerns over dust rather than on enhancing vacuum cleaner performance. After mulling over saving consumers worries about inhaling dust during the entire process of using a vacuum cleaner, Samsung succeeded in developing the model.

Contrary to Dyson here dirt can be only inside canister (HEPA blocks its passage to motor). And you don't need to disassembly half the cleaner to remove it.

Second cyclone actually works contrary to 80% of Chinese cleaners, just remember to clean dust from inside.
