Coronavirus: Masks and respirators discussion

  • The CDC announced an order late Friday that will require people to wear a face mask while using any form of public transportation, including buses, trains, taxis, airplanes, boats, subways or ride-share vehicles while traveling into, within and out of the US.

The order goes into effect at 11:59 p.m. Monday.

Masks must be worn while waiting, boarding, traveling and disembarking, it said. The coverings need to be at least two or more layers of breathable fabric secured to the head with ties, ear loops or elastic bands — and scarves and bandanas do not count, the order says.

The CDC said it reserves the right to enforce the order through criminal penalties, but it “strongly encourages and anticipates widespread voluntary compliance” and expects support from other federal agencies to implement the order.

  • 'war as politics by another means'....we can now add .... "pandemics as politics by other means"....and look whose coming out on top.

  • At 48 minutes into the WaPo discussion below, Fauci was asked about double-masking. His response, given his recent flip-flopping may surprise you.

Having said that double-masking "didn't make a difference", he appears to flip-flop back saying that the CDC is investigating "whether two masks may be better than one" and added that "it makes common sense" ... and added that the reason they have not recommended it until now is that "they are a science-based organization."

Right wing sites going rounds with fake "double mask" thing that they invented themselfs. Fauci is also seems to be idiot placed specially.

Original CDC statement talked about double layered masks (for reference - most simple masks are triple layered) to just remove lot of cheap bad stuff made after COVID start by advanced "free market forces".

  • Double masks scam in media continues

Now with main media telling you that it is pointless to wear two masks.

Either it comes from "smart" idea to sell now two masks instead of one or ti is just approach to discredit any masks use.

Note that all main media still fully ignore proper masks and never suggest them.

  • YouTube has suspended Sen. Rand Paul from the platform after he claimed in a video that "cloth masks don't work" with regard to the spread of COVID-19.

Paul violated YouTube's policy on coronavirus medical misinformation. YouTube prohibits videos containing "claims that masks do not play a role in preventing the contraction or transmission of COVID-19.”

“Most of the masks you get over the counter don’t work. They don’t prevent infection,” Paul said in the now-deleted video. Paul also cited real and actual science while claiming cloth masks don't work. However, he noted that N-95 masks are effective in protecting against COVID-19 infection.

N95 masks main issue is sealing. And usual cloth masks are horrible in this regard.

The dynamic respirator changes the size of the pores in response to changing conditions, making it easier for the wearer to breathe; A transparent tube connects the mask to a portable device that communicates with a computer.

The prototype mask, developed by a group of Korean scientists, includes two porous filter membranes - one on each side of the wearer's face - that are composed of electrospinned elastomer nanofibers.

Each disc-shaped membrane is surrounded and connected to a pneumatic ring-shaped tension mechanism. This "stretcher" is in turn connected to a lightweight portable device containing an air sensor, an air pump, and a microcontroller chip. The device itself is wirelessly connected to an external computer on which artificial intelligence software is installed.

When the sensor detects a high concentration of harmful particles in the air, as well as a relatively normal breathing rate of the user, the computer activates the pump. This causes the stretching ring to inflate and become thicker, which allows the membrane attached to it to remain relaxed. As a result, the pores of the membrane remain the smallest, ensuring the maximum degree of filtration.

However, if the sensor detects cleaner air - along with more intense breathing, for example, which might accompany relatively COVID-safe outdoor exercise - the software prompts the device to deflate. Thus, they become thinner, while stretching the membrane. As a result, the pore size increases, which makes breathing easier.

What's more, tests carried out on volunteers showed that even when the pores became large enough to significantly improve the breathability of the mask, the air filtration efficiency dropped by only six percent.

Further, it is planned to make the technology lighter, more compact and less cumbersome, for which it would be advisable to abandon the pump and switch to a non-pneumatic tensioning mechanism.

An article about the research led by Seoul National University Seung Hwan Ko was recently published in the ACS Nano journal.

  • Due to the spread of the omicron strain of coronavirus in Latvia, it was decided to extend the emergency situation until February 28, Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins said.

At a press conference, Minister of Health Daniel Pavluts explained that today the coalition supported the proposal of the Ministry of Health to use medical masks and FFP-2 respirators instead of cloth masks.

It is just horrible as 100% of masks must be proper FFP3.

Razer company now plans to release a Zephyr Pro version of the mask in 2022. It will have all the features of the standard model, including the dual-fan active filtration system with N95 filters and RGB lighting, and add voice amplification.

  • N95 masks are skyrocketing in price as a result of a new potential recommendation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC is considering changing its official recommendation to higher quality masks, like N95 and KN95 masks.

As a result, prices of these masks have surged at marketplaces like Amazon.com, a new Bloomberg report revealed on Wednesday. A pack of 40 KN95 masks is now about $79.99, up from $16.99 in late November. A 50-pack of Kimberly-Clark N95 masks was priced at $57 compared to $23 in October.

As Omicron tears through the United States, many people are abandoning their old cloth masks in favor of higher quality masks.

Just almost two years passed. Do we need another 2 years to move to proper P3 and N99-100 masks?
