  • UK and Germany resisting US Huawei ban:

In "Serious Blow" To US, Britain Concludes Huawei Is "Manageable Risk" To 5G Rollout

The UK, however, hinted that it would refuse to endorse Washington's "with us or against us line" when Alex Younger, head of MI6, the UK secret intelligence service, on Friday indicated that Britain might take a softer line on Huawei than the US, saying the issue was too complex to simply ban the company. He said it was “a more complicated issue than in or out” and countries had “a sovereign right to work through the answer to all of this”.

Germany tells America to verpissen off over Huawei 5G cyber-Sicherheitsbedenken

Germany is expected to snub US pressure to cut Huawei out of its next-generation 5G networks, rejecting claims that the Chinese manufacturer is a security risk.

According to German media reports, a weekend meeting of the German cabinet dug into the issue and effectively rejected America efforts to impose a global ban on the company. The meeting considered a report by its own security services that said it has failed to find any evidence of spying. That report reflects a early indication by UK security services that they have been unable to find any evidence that Huawei is installing backdoors in its products, something that is credible given that GCHQ has access to Huawei's source code. A final report is expected this spring.

  • Rural U.S. Carriers Resist Proposed Ban Aimed at Huawei

Rural U.S. carriers, many of whom have built their networks on low-cost Chinese gear, have been quietly lobbying against such a ban.

“We’ve obviously been in touch with the administration to make sure they understand whatever they do in that [order] doesn’t have the unintended consequence of hurting rural America,” said Carri Bennet, general counsel of the Rural Wireless Association, a trade group of smaller carriers. “What nobody in the administration or government or Congress seems to have looked at is how pervasive is all this gear in our networks.”

CANADA: Huawei ban could hurt wireless networks ... Telus says

Telus Corp. chief executive Darren Entwistle warned Thursday that banning Huawei Technologies Inc. equipment from Canada’s 5G networks could weaken wireless network performance and increase costs.

The Vancouver-based telecom, which uses the Chinese telecom’s equipment extensively in its 3G and 4G networks, reported it would face a “material, non-recurring, incremental” cost increase if the federal government bans Huawei gear from the next-generation network. A prohibition of Huawei technology without compensation could potentially delay 5G network deployment, according to Telus’ quarterly report.

“Our partnership with Huawei over the past decade has been fruitful for Canada and fruitful for Canadians,” he said. “Canada’s wireless networks are consistently the most capable in the world. Our Huawei partnership has allowed us to be exceptionally innovative with our network deployment taking into account the realities of Canada’s vast geography and demographics.”

  • @jleo

    Thanks for useful stuff.

  • Truth is 5G is going to coexist with 4G/LTE networks for the very long term future. Folks are spinning as if 5G is everything or the end to all things, no there is going to be 6G and so on. Just because you are rolling out 5G does not mean that your core and metro networks are going to change, most of those will stay. And if security is a concern, you can always go with somebody else's core, metro or subscriber management. Most Tier 1 operators' public networks are multi vendors in any case, sure you may lose some flow through or end to end operations management but those can be dealt with.

  • @ghkqn

5G actually will be complete nightmare, as even with 4G we had lot of different bands, now we can have situation that in one country frequency range will be totally different from other country.

And not only this, all this ranges are not yet set and can change, making your 5G phone useless (in its 5G capabilities).

Polar Codes are the solution of a problem related to the construction of coding schemes that send information at a rate better suited to the capacity of communication channels. The problem had remained unresolved ever since the field of information theory was first established by Claude Shannon in 1948.

  • Canada: Telus to launch 5G network with Huawei by the end of 2020 Feb 13,2020

Telus Corp. will launch a 5G network in Canada later this year using Huawei Technologies Co gear, Telus’ CFO said Thursday. “We’re going to launch 5G with Huawei out of the gate,” Doug French said in an interview with the Financial Post, after the Canadian telecom reported fourth-quarter earnings. “We will continue to work with the government to make sure we meet all their standards, but we don’t see anything slowing us down at the moment.”

Huawei Is Winning the Argument in Europe, as the U.S. Fumbles to Develop Alternatives WASHINGTON —Feb. 17, 2020

America’s global campaign to prevent its closest allies from using Huawei, the Chinese telecom giant, in the next generation of wireless networks has largely failed, with foreign leaders publicly rebuffing the United States argument that the firm poses an unmanageable security threat.

Britain has already called the Trump administration’s bluff, betting that officials would back away from their threat to cut off intelligence sharing with any country that used Huawei equipment in its network. Apart from an angry phone call between President Trump and Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Britain appears to be paying no price for its decision to let Huawei into limited parts of its network, under what the British say will be rigorous surveillance.

Germany now appears ready to follow a similar path, despite an endless stream of cajoling and threats by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Defense Secretary Mark T. Esper and other U.S. officials at a global security conference in Munich last weekend.

Huawei 5G products to be made in Europe Xinhua 2 days ago

Chinese technology firm Huawei would manufacture 5G products worth billions of euros annually in the European Union (EU), the company’s representative in Brussels told Xinhua.

Abraham Liu, Huawei’s chief representative to the EU Institutions, said in an interview that the decision came from Huawei’s global industrial setup and long-term commitment to Europe, which has a strong industrial base Huawei’s presence and operation in Europe was boosted at the end of January, when Britain and the European Union, regardless of the US demand to ban Huawei, announced their respective decisions to allow the company to participate in the building of their 5G networks, albeit with some restrictions.

“I believe that’s an important milestone they have achieved. It’s a balance of the political pressure and also their own business interests.” Liu said. Since it set up a research and development center 20 years ago in Sweden, Huawei has been increasingly involved in the world’s largest trading bloc. It now has more than 13,000 employees in Europe, with 73 percent of them are hired locally. Huawei maintains 23 research and development centers across 14 European countries and these figures are growing.

  • Huawei hits 5G critical mass with Germany’s approval

Tide is shifting on Trump's tech war as Germany signals it will allow Chinese tech giant to build part of its 5G network

Germany will allow Huawei to build out part of its 5G network, the business daily Handelsblatt reported last week after viewing a new draft law that the Angela Merkel government will submit to the Bundestag next month. Japan and South Korea politely but firmly refused to exclude the Chinese telecommunications giant from their networks in October. Among the world’s major economies, only the US, UK, India and Taiwan plan to block Huawei 5G equipment. Huawei now has the inside track in the race to develop “Fourth Industrial Revolution” applications that exploit 5G capabilities, including self-programming industrial robots, remote-control mining, “smart city” traffic management, telemedicine, and pandemic control.

In Sweden, home of Huawei’s largest competitor Ericsson, the national telecommunications regulator postponed an auction of 5G spectrum after a Swedish appeals court granted Huawei’s petition to reconsider a government ban on the use of its broadband equipment. Ericsson itself criticized the government ban. China is one of Ericsson’s largest markets, and the firm’s biggest and most modern production facility opened last year in Nanjing. Ericsson is expected to build up to 10% of China’s massive 5G network, with a projected 10 million base stations in place by 2024.

  • Ericsson will leave Sweden if Huawei ban exists, says Ericsson CEO

Börje Ekholm, CEO of telecom equipment maker, Ericsson recently started lobbying against the Swedish government and his text message to a Swedish media oulet revealed that “If the ban on Huawei still exists, Ericsson can leave Sweden”. Sweden plans to ban Huawei from participating in the country’s 5G construction business.

Sweden’s Daily News discloses the text of Borje to Anna Hallberg, Swedish Minister of Commerce, which reads that Ericsson would leave Sweden unless the Sweden government remove the ban on Huawei and ZTE. Ericsson is particularly strong in mobile communications in China, with nearly half the market for mobile systems. With respect to fixed networks, the company’s market share is about ten percent. So, Huawei’s ban in Sweden may create a similar situation for the company in China.

In reply to Borje’s statement, Halberg says that the Swedish government cannot remove the Huawei ban because the decision is taken on the recommendation of the security department by the Post and Telecommunication Administration interim secretary. Borje says, Ericsson and three other major operators are filing a lawsuit against the ban to support Huawei. On the other hand, he said “Although we have talked with several Swedish law firms, no one is willing to help Huawei. There are many cowards here.”
