  • The firmware updates enabling the much-anticipated Atomos Ninja V and Panasonic LUMIX S1H RAW over HDMI combination have unfortunately been slightly delayed from the original 25th May release schedule, to ensure the highest possible level of RAW recording.

An unforeseen technical issue has come to light in the final rounds of beta testing that needs rectification prior to shipping. The companies are working together to complete the development as soon as possible. We apologise to our mutual customers waiting for the functions this release enables.

Please note that Panasonic will be releasing Ver 2.0 firmware on May 25th with various improvements to camera functions, however will not include the planned RAW HDMI output feature. Atomos will release its Ninja V AtomOS for LUMIX S1H HDMI RAW in-line with Panasonic’s RAW output firmware.

It is interesting that Nikon had very similar history.

  • Interesting so you think it won't come out? Its funny because my experience with ProRes Raw enabled cameras has been exactly that...a real competitor to more expensive solutions for a Panasonic, Atomos and FCPX user. Everyone bitches and moans about it though so I don't think many others see it that way. So in other words no threat to Red and the like. Whole forums full of folks going 'I don't want raw anyways' with the S1H...

  • @kellar42

My version is that reason comes in present cameras sales numbers.

So now Apple and RED cartel (who also control raw part of Atomos features) decided that they don't need one mroe competitor.

  • The Raw release has been delayed but the 2.0 firmware is coming out. Wonder what is up. Lot of complaints, lot of misinformation about ProRes Raw on the internet. Shooting PRR on the Eva1 was amazing, but big and clunky with the 7" recorder and larger camera.

  • Panasonic has announced that the company will release the firmware update program for the LUMIX S1H Full-Frame mirrorless camera to enhance its performance and usability, as stated last September. Working together with Atomos, a global company that creates video equipment for professional film creators, the new firmware enables the output of maximum 5.9K/29.97p and 59.94p 4K* RAW video data over HDMI to save it as Apple ProRes RAW on the Atomos Ninja V 4K HDR monitor-recorder. In addition, it further complies with 3.5K Anamorphic 4:3. Panasonic commits to provide innovative solutions for professional film creation by enabling all S1H users to receive this firmware for free of charge.

The program will be available at LUMIX Global Customer Support website

    https://av.jpn.support.panasonic.com/support/global/cs/dsc/ on May 25, 2020.

    LUMIX S1H Firmware Version 2.0

RAW video data output over HDMI

    • [5.9K] / [4K] / [Anamorphic (4:3) 3.5K] 12-bit RAW video data can be output over HDMI. The Apple ProRes RAW can be recorded on Atomos Ninja V.
      • FF 5.9K (5888x3312) | 29.97p/25p/23.98p | 16:9 | 12-bit
      • S35 4K (4128x2176) | 59.94p/50p/29.97p/25p/23.98p | 17:9 | 12-bit
      • S35mm Anamorphic 3.5K (3536x2656) | 50p/29.97p/25p/23.98p | 4:3 | 12-bit
    • V-Log or Rec.709 is selectable on Live View monitor during RAW output.
    • Shooting assist functions including WFM (Wave Form Monitor), Vector Scope, Luminance Spot Meter, Zebra Pattern can be used during RAW output.

Enhanced video functions / improved performance

    • Downconverted output over HDMI during [6K]/[5.9K]/[5.4K] video recording is available.
    • In Creative Video mode, it is possible to disable the operation of starting/stopping video recording by pressing a shutter button.
    • In Creative Video mode, it is possible to set [Rec Quality(My List)] from the control panel.
    • The value of noise reduction in [V-Log] in Photo Style has been expanded to [-1]. It suppresses afterimages previously occurred in some situations.
    • It is possible to prevent the enlarged view window of MF Assist to be output over HDMI.
    • There were cases where color banding appeared in 4:2:0/10-bit video recording in some situations. This bug has been minimized.
    • There were cases where the REC RUN time code did not count up when the video was not recorded on an SD Memory Card but was recorded on an external device over HDMI. This bug has been fixed.

    Other added functions / improvements

    • It is possible to set [AF+MF] in AFC mode.
    • It is possible to assign functions to the lens' Fn buttons when the Panasonic LUMIX S PRO 70-200mm F2.8 O.I.S. (S-E70200) is mounted.
    • It is possible to assign function to the Fn buttons of Sigma L-Mount interchangeable lenses.
    • When attaching a lens using the Sigma MC-21 mount converter and [Image Stabilizer] > [Lens] is set to ON , Body I.S.(Image Stabilizer) suppresses roll movement.
    • [Backlight Illumination Period] has been added to the menu of Status LCD. [ON1] prevents the LCD backlight to be turned off.
    • It is possible to select the card slot to save the JPEG images developed by in-camera RAW processing.
    • [0.5 SEC] has been added for an option of [Duration Time (photo)] in [Auto Review].
    • [Off (Disable Press and Hold)] can be assigned to the Fn button. It disables operation when the button is long-pressed.
    • Fn button can be used for checking aperture effect while the button is pressed.
    • To prevent improper operation, touch-control is disabled for [Delete All] operation in playback mode. Only cursor buttons can be used for [Delete All] operation.
    • There were rare cases where the camera froze during [Segmented File Recording] or during recording at 400 Mbps under a particular set of conditions including the type of SD Card used. This phenomenon has been improved.
    • Aperture and shutter speed can be controlled using front/rear dials when the rear monitor is set to OFF.
    • There were cases where F value control failed depending on the maximum F value when non-Panasonic L-Mount lens is mounted. This bug has been fixed.
  • @kellar42 You're not wrong, but it is more complex than just price IMHO. Panasonic has made some pretty big miss steps beginning with the GH3 (arguably the GH2). Basically the only reason we are seeing the camera's we are seeing today, Today, is because of the work that was done from this forum to improve the GH2. Panasonic more than all others did take note, and the GH3 was a step in the right direction, but price was dramatically higher, as well as size, while lacking 4k. Then came the GH4, much better with 4K but price got really high compared to the GH2 which fit so manies budget and size concerns. Then came the GH5/GH5S and now the prices were extreme for many and cut them out of the loop of their film hobby/dreams. Word spread of an 8K global shutter Micro Four Thirds sensor. Global shutter was a whisper in the dark since the GH2, and many saw that perhaps it would be worth it to save their pennies for a GH6 8K global shutter beauty, and overlook their price and size concerns for perfection, especially since a now fully developed micro four thirds eco system existed, and undoubtedly the global sensor sweetness would trickle down to all micro four thirds cameras and soon we could all carry around little pocket beasts, give them to our wives, family and friends, and have awesome photo's and video be the norm for the planet. But then Panasonic Jumped ship, introduced some interesting but very expensive full frame camera's with very expensive lenses to boot in an attempt to compete with and declare themselves king of full frame. Then shortly after they said something big is coming, and speculation of a g6 rose, but it was the same full framed camera for even more money. Yep, it does great video, but it is very heavy, very expensive, and not intended for 99% of those that were waiting for something wonderful, compact, and much much less expensive. The short version, there is nothing wrong with a heavy expensive beast, and most of us would be happy to play with one, but we want what we always wanted, a camera to carry around with the family, that happens to also do some professional grade video. GH2 was $700 with a lens and so close to perfection for it's time. Economy is worse now, no matter the statistics say. We might all love talking shop, but most have modest budgets at best. To buy this camera and take full advantage the price would soon be 10K with lenses, monitor, rig etc.. and even as a carry around camera with nothing but a lens, it will take it's toll on most lugging it around all day. Youtubes serious downturn in quality of honest reviews is also another aspect...

  • I still think the S series finally nails everything wished for in the DSLR revolution more than 10 years ago, now. Maybe the bright-eyed kits have grown up and the real industry never cared anyways, but we're talking about truly amazing cameras that tick a lot of boxes, but more importantly, create amazing images and can do so from the hand with no rigging. BlackMagic is also doing amazing things, but I don't feel their pockets hold up quite as well for the kind of documentary-ish things I do. Beyond that, you have to go to an FX9 or a C level to get anything close from Canon or Sony, in my opinion. As usual, Panasonic seems to have an amazing camera that is less widely embraced than less amazing offerings from competitors...but the only difference this time is it hasn't been embraced by this forum either. Because of price? Because no raw yet?

  • New firmware v1.2

In V-Log shooting, the phenomenon that flickering occurs depending on shooting conditions during movie recording, this has been improved.
