For starters small tip. Not all guys know that you can overclock even non K models, if on proper MB.
Usually it is enough to use build in MB automatic feature.
On average it'll be 3.8Ghz for 4 cores mode + 103Mhz BCLK, overall it is 15% performance rise (it takes Intel around 4 CPU generations now to do same :-).
In reality, of course it is simpler to get i2500K for around $51.5 (like Z77, P67 does not support it)
Around 95-99% of CPUs work perfect at 4500Ghz, and around 30-40% on good cooler can work at 4.8-5Ghz.
Overclocked Sandy Bridge with GPU like 1050 / RX 460 still is cheapest build for 4K editing, especially with proper editor.

it is possible to do a real time cross dissolve with two 4k 8bit 420 videos in timeline.
Btw it depends also on GPU and NLE. The only extra load is secondary stream decode here.
All you need is cheap new GPU and good editor.
Also each editor is too different to make any rules.
Intel Xeon E3-1240 - 2600 without graphics part for $58
Note - multiplier is locked here.
2500K now at 41,76
2500 itself (works at 3.9Ghz all cores see first post) at $32.12
from modern cheap options can get AMD Ryzen R1600 from same seller for $95 (check our deals topics for coupons to make it lower
In proper NLE it must be super smooth even on 2 core notebook, if you not use raw footage. As must be decoded by hardware block and after this such simple effects made by GPU, not CPU.
Latest MacOS versions no longer support Nvidia cards, right?
That is correct for any newer Nvidia cards. Older Nvidia cards do work, but, must be Kepler based. I've read the max is the GTX 780TI with the GTX 680 (there were Mac versions) and GTX 670 (and more) also working.
My 2012 15" MacBook Pro 9,1 with a GTX 650M is supposed to work (personally untested) and my 2009 17" MacBook Pro 5,2 (*This system has dual graphics processors -- a NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT with 512 MB of dedicated GDDR3 SDRAM and a NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 256 MB of DDR3 SDRAM) works in Mojave using DosDude1's patch, but there were occasional sleep issues forcing a reboot. The fresh install felt snappy on an SSD.

Note that Ryzen 1200 price reached 2500K level, and it is much simpler to get good and modern board for it, plus you will have good upgrade path up to 16 cores if you will get MB with nice VRMs.
