Impressive image quality.
Similar to Leica cinema range lenses. Almost out of this planet optical design and materials . I would like to buy one for shure this is my new 50mm new standard.
I want to know if there will be cine versions of the new otus lenses.... would be great to rent them.
Check also http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6145/55mm-f1.4-zeiss-distagon/p1 it is early topic about same lens.
Mind melted. Looks amazing.
Hope they expand the family quickly!
Yes expand family quickly. And for the price point, i find it very acceptable for the image quality.
Wonder what this would be like on the Speedbooster. Could be a temporary way to get a 35mm out of it until the real 35 Otus comes out.
Also, Richard rocks!

Zeiss' Flickr Page with a LOT of examples
I think if the lens are from "rare glass" like the guy says in the video, with the speedbooster you can gain a stop, but, in my logic, you will lose resolution. A this point, the purpose of this lens can be wasted. Am i right? Maybe expert people can clarify this.
Great lens anyway, i would love to have a set of these when they will be available.
Build quality of the Zeiss 55mm f/1.4 Otus Distagon is amazing.
The image quality is wonderful. Bokeh is smooth, colors are crisp and focus point is sharp
WOW!!! Jumping out of the charts http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/lens-widget-fullscreen?compare=false&lensId=zeiss_otus_55_1p4&cameraId=nikon_d800&version=0&fl=55&av=4&view=mtf-ca
I'm checking for coins between the sofa cushions and buying one right away :P

Overall, the Sony 55mm ƒ/1.8 is an extremely sharp lens. Wide open on a full-frame camera -- the Sony A7R in this case -- there's a little softness at ƒ/1.8, but the center is still quite sharp. As expected, on sub-frame cameras, we saw a little more sharpness wide open, particularly in the center. After dialing down to ƒ/2.8, we saw a dramatic increase in sharpness with only minor corner softness. On a sub-frame camera, especially, ƒ/2.8 looked amazingly sharp.
With outstanding optical quality, the Carl Zeiss Otus 1,4/55 certainly represents a high water mark for a retrofocus fast standard for DSLRs. However, it might not be the high price that deters people, in practical terms the large size and lack of autofocus may be the more limiting aspects, but there’s no denying optical quality like this demands attention.
On FF, Nikkor 50mm f1.4G was one of my favourite lenses, wipe open delivered a substantial creamy bokeh, a pronounced vignetting (that I loved) and stopped down f2 was razor sharp (and vignetting much less) ... we'll see about the rest, but in the sharpness department this Otus from Zeiss is insane
Performance is very impressive even wide open just right into the FF-corner. So also at distant targets the lens does not show field-curvature. But it has some hefty vignetting at f1.4.
The color rendition from this lens is completely accurate–and we actually feel like it’s the most true to life that we’ve seen sans the bit of saturation that it seems to add. Zeiss’s 55mm f1.4 Otus does a great job with greens and blues, but also tends to lack a bit on the warmer side.

Going to be playing with this lens for a few weeks. Really excited, so far it feels very modern in construction. Kind of like handling the Sigma 18-35, but far more rigid.
Sharp as heck wide open. May also be able ot test it with the new Speedboosters specifically for BMD cameras.
Otus+speedbooster= Sin. , but a tasty one
As soon as I get back to LA I'll test with both new SBs. Just got it setup!
