HP TouchPad - $99 Tablet - WebOS and Possibly Android Port

    The WebOS-based HP tablets are orphaned products sold off at a loss.

    I managed to get a 32gb from Best Buy for $150 after a bad experience with OnSale. What this really shows is, nobody is gonna pay iPad prices for something that isn't an iPad. Make em cheap and people will buy.

    I received one of these as an eval unit and was impressed. WebOS feels more intuitive than Android 3.x and the multi-tasking is more usable than iOS. Unfortunately the huge lack of apps (and HP turning on too much logging which slowed it down) made one wonder who HP expected to buy it. HP gave out $50 of free apps which only highlighted the lack of quality apps. However, at $99 the hardware is a steal. With a 1.2 GHz dual core processor it is faster than either the Xoom or Galaxy 10.1 and with logging off it feels much faster than either. While an Android port will be nice I do hope WebOS continues to be developed.

    I ordered one from Borders, then received an email two days later saying, ooops, we don't have any. After researching it a bit more, it seems like a bit of a loser product. Still, $99 is a good deal.

    HP is a loser company (I have two dead laptops...just out of warranty). Sooner they get out of the computer business the better. At least in the USA the class-action gave them a kick up the arse.

    Biggest problem right now is no netflix instant and one website I need for work can't login with the stock browser and only other browser available costs. If they do get android up, I'll probably switch for that.

    The point is the porting/hacking of an affordable device - not if the deal is up or not any more. I managed to get a 32gb and am excited about the possibility of the android port. Apparently Qualcomm has a leaked developer version out there - we will see what they can do about getting it installed.

    I think Amazon should buy WebOS for a future Kindle.

    @Fafhrd no, WebOS sucks. No apps vs Android. The stock browser sucks, it can do flash, but badly and no netflix instant streaming. I'd rather have windows on this tablet vs webos.

    Well after over a year sitting in a drawer, I finally got out the old Touchpad and tried to install Android on it. Took some searching for an easy install, most of them looked way more complicated than I'd like(too many command line how-to's).

    That's as easy as it gets. Still took a couple of tries, I forgot to put one folder on the Touchpad, then I had a dual boot of Android 9.0 and WebOs. Never boot up into WebOs now. Android really makes this tablet sing. Chrome browser is WAY better than stock and the android YouTube app is also way better than the HP app.

    If you still have one of these sitting around untouched, it's never been easier to install Android on it.
