  • It seems like low light scene, thus camera was shooting at long aperture. You can try to lock shutter speed in Flicker removal menu. Also in lower light scenarios, you should use the largest possible aperture for shooting. Shooting at F5.6 with low light will produce blurry darker videos. I'm shooting with PanaLeica 25mm F1.4 in low light scenarios. But you need a lot of light to shoot crystal sharp videos

  • Hello. And sorry for my bad grammar. My shiny new G3 works perfect in photo with a kit 14-42mm. But what's wrong with the video? It's very sad to see the result of using hacked (up to 42Mbits) f/w v1.2 Please, look at the images attached - it hasn't any details at all frame and looks like grabbed from 2Mpix webcam :-) Another problem is "interlace", I think. Or this "legless" guys have a chance to get a video with the details of his motion? Would you like to give me an advice of how to improve the video quality? I don't have another lens, so please consider this.

Many thanks to all of you!

  • if you want to shot videos with higher quality, you can use hack. Also if you have EU versiou with 30min time limit you should remove this limitation and shoot to whole card.

  • Mine is brand new. I am not yet famiar with its all features. Should I refrain from hacks till I get used to it or is it advisable to ahead with one?

  • Oh, I already know of the release, just waiting for the one with 'Manual Controls', just as Alex mentioned. Hoping they find the solution soon!

  • 8GB card should be enough to record about 30mins. If you look closer, remaining time is counting slow (1s in about 3s). So with 49Mbit/s avg rate 8GB should be enough for about 27 miins.

  • Hello, HELP NEEDED (lower bit rate hack)

I am new to hacking (my G3) and I have used setf.ini by @pvdog only to find my 8GB (30mb/S, rage 10) now can only record 10 mins of video , instead of an hour or more previously with the standard factory settings. What I would like is a trade-off: a hack that gives me better quality than factory settings and gives reasonable use of HD card capacity. I believe @pvdog's hack is at 49mb/S, so is there a hack in the range of 15-25mb/S?

I can buy a larger capacity SD card and I probably will anyway, but high cost is not something I can currently afford. I'd love a GH3, or even a G5, but finances do not permit at present. I want to make best use of what I currently have.

    Thank you, BT.

  • I was replying to joel. He said "Even if it doesn't include the manual control..yet".. And this PTool is out since june. I also am waiting for manual movie control :)

  • But no 'manual movie mode' for G3.

  • PTool with G3 support is out quite long.

  • Will it be soon? I just bought a G3 yesterday, and if there is indeed a new PTool, that would be great! (Even if it doesn't include the manual control..yet) I am more than willing to wait for it! Keep at it! Thanks!

  • Seems no manual movie mode for G3 currently. Vitaliy will release another PTool version soon.

  • Where is the official G3 hack with information on what it does exactly to the video settings on the camera? Thank you.

  • My apologies...

  • guys, check topic title please.

This is topic you need to use for all discussions concerning G3:

  • Forgot to mention the above was rendered in Sony Vegas at 26mbps (max available). Don't forget to turn on 1080p.

  • @JOFO Some reportedly good lenses, like the Konica Hexanon 40mm f1.8, are very affordable (as low as $40) at ebay.

Here is a Pentax-M 50mm f1.4 SMC Takumar ($95) on my G3 running through the apertures with the earliest @pvdog hack posted here. I got 32mbps average (with camera settings at normal except for expressive color turned on):

  • Yea, if you have full manual lens you can shot that way. But unfortunately I have only m4/3 Pana/Leica lenses so I must wait :)

  • @quickfound Wow, you're totally right, I didn't realize this. @JOFO, yes that locks the shutter....That got me wondering...

I took a lens adaptor ring I got from B&H and put an old-style Nikon lens on it. Total manual control. You have to turn on the "shoot without lens" option in the Custom Menu. Just testing it now. Seems to work, though I'm sure those aperture readings are not true.

Interesting! I think the "shoot without lens" option may also be a key to turning off the auto-exposure. Nice stop-gap stuff before the hack comes out.

  • Yes that's true. Also you can lock shutter speed to 25/30/50/60/100/120 with flicker removal option. But each is hard to set instantly within shooting. And it's also very limmited. Personaly I want to be able to set shutter speed in full range (1/25 to 1/4000) to get better exposure in various light conditions. Also priority mode would be great to have. For example to lock aperture and shutter before shooting. It's not convinient to set aperture instantly within shooting with bg blur feature. It's annoying when camera changes aperture when shooting and picture is flickering because of aperture. It's hard to shoot e.g. concert because the camera is setting aperture everytime subject or camera moves.

  • G3 is wonderful for the price; you can save funds for great lenses. Manual control will make it much better. In case anyone is unaware, you do have some partial manual control by using Exposure Compensation (+/- 3EV in video) and "Backgound blur" (which adjusts aperture to change depth of field).

  • Yes, it's a great backup camera then. I'm not yet on the pro-level as it's just my hobby atm. I have also handycam HDC-TM700 for video. I do small concerts and other cultural events in my neighborhood, sometimes a wedding. I was pretty impressed with quality of patched G3 footage. Just this auto-exposure is the show stopper for me. I realy got into all that manual thing with photography and my results are way better than photos of one "pro" here. There we see that skill is making a pro, not the expensive hardware :)

  • @JOFO Yeah. I plan to try the other hack once the manual issue hack is complete. I am actually on the pro-level, videography-wise. I own a Panasonic AG-AF100 and do work for big corporations. What amazed me was that I could shoot with the G3, even with auto-exposure, and get an image which cuts together nicely with the AG-AF100. And of course, the lenses all match, etc. It's a really fun camera, the G3, and I find it's small enough that I actually have it with me very often.

  • @zaxtervid: I know what you mean, that's exactly my storry :) Didn't notice that it's auto only camera. But everything about photo is simply outstanding regarding its price. I have G1 before and even G3 hasn't manual video, it's a gian leap from G1 which was pretty impressive when it hit market. Vitaliy's hack made G3 even better and if he could bring in manual video comtrols it will be superior camera in this price range :) For us, videographers beginners, it's great piece of hardware :)

  • Will you release a second hack with manual controls anytime soon? I haven't read about any progress so far...

I'll make status update in March, do not worry.
