  • Dolby Vision: the future of TV is really, really bright

Dolby is lining up TV and media partners in its own bid to get consumers excited again: a product it’s calling "Dolby Vision." It's a set of technologies that cover everything from the mastering process to displays themselves, and the company has been quietly showing off demos in recent months. Colors pop, incredible detail is visible from the darkest blacks to the hottest highlights, and a dramatic increase in brightness makes for a viewing experience that’s so close to reality it seems like a revelation. In an industry that feels like it’s stalling, Dolby Vision has the potential to steer the conversation away from the resolution arms race and towards the kind of visceral, emotional reaction consumers haven’t felt since high-definition TVs came to market some 15 years ago.

Acording to Pat Griffis, Dolby’s executive director of technology strategy, television imagery has been held back by standards that lost their relevance long ago, and the easiest way to understand that is to look at brightness. Currently video is created and displayed using a reference peak brightness level — and it’s much too small.

  • I love it that for the Panny 4K the rumors are more frequent, the features are better and the price is dropping. They might have priced it at the Sony 4K level....

Kodak is planning to roll out this not-unattractive, not-terribly-expensive, but not-terribly innovative Micro Four Thirds-based interchangeable-lens camera later this year. The PixPro S-1 has decent specs, including a 16.8-megapixel sensor, 3-inch tilting 920,000-pixel display, Wi-Fi and 5fps continuous-shooting mode. It will ship with a slowish 12-45mm f3.5-6.3 collapsible lens; the collapsing mechanism looks a lot like Olympus' original design for its 14-42mm lens, and the camera uses sensor-shift image stabilization like Olympus as well. There's a second lens, a 42.5-160mm, as well as a spotting scope that may be part of a second bundle.

  • I hope this Kodak does ship this year! There have been rumors for aaaaaggeessss saying Kodak will, but they haven't yet :-/

Even if it isn't that good, having more brands join the Micro Four Thirds system is only a good thing!! :-D

And if it is cheap enough I might pick it up anyway as an extra body for multicam live shoots.

  • This Vivitar "lenscamera" looks like the ill fated Sakar's Polaroid camera repackaged.

  • @MarcioK

Yep, as Vivitar and Polaroid are just defunct brand names, so they get anything and put name on it.

  • any specs, etc, from the GH 4K?
