Nice bright lens, and 1080p/60 - could be a nice walk-around all-purpose. Wait, no articulating screen??!! Fuck that!
Interesting that for G series Canon have pretty much settled at 4000x3000 pixel size for stills. Maybe it's close to limits of the optics?
Among other things, cameras like these could be great for timelapse shooting, especially with some extra ND. Small size, no need for big rigging, SDXC support, fast continuous shooting for smooth movement and not too power-hungry. With 128 gigabyte card and external battery these could shoot JPEGs continuously for a few days.

G16's movie modes is the introduction of a 1080p full HD mode at 60fps. There's also a 1080p30 mode as well as 720p30 and VGA (640 x 480) also at 30 frames per second. No doubt there'll be those who mourn the passing of the earlier model's 1080p24 mode, with it's film-like qualities, but probably more will welcome the higher frame rate which provides the option for good quality half speed slow motion recording when played back at 30fps, something that Canon has thus far avoided on its DSLR range, at least at 1080p.

Camera producing images with saturated colours and the built in image stabilisation does a good job in low light.
The camera takes photos with very good detail, with good detail into the corners, whether using wide-angle or full optical zoom, with low levels of purple fringing or chromatic aberration.

Image quality is excellent, though, with a perfectly usable ISO range of 80-1600 and fast f/1.8 maximum aperture, albeit only at the 28mm wide-angle lens setting, making the G16 very well-suited to low-light, hand-held photography. It's also possible to capture the blurred backgrounds and sharp subject that most compacts struggle to achieve, while the 5x zoom offers a longer reach than some rivals. Full 1080p video at 60fps with continuous auto-focusing, stereo sound and full use of the zoom is the icing on the imaging cake

The G16's image files are (like all Canon P&S digital cameras) optimized for bold bright colors and hard-edged but slightly flat contrast.
G16 can be viewed as the culmination of a continuously refined single idea--to create a compact, self-contained, precision-engineered camera that functions like a P&S, but also provides lots of user control.
Video clips produced by the G16 are easily equivalent to video clips produced by consumer level video cameras.
I use Canon PowerShot G16 to take models pictures
Video performance is good with the PowerShot G16. It unfortunately doesn't offer a lot of manual control options over the video settings, but the camera's automatic settings create adequate video clips. The 5x optical zoom works.

Like previous G-series cameras, the G16 is a compact, feature-rich digicam with integrated raw file support. It provides one of the most comprehensive selections of external controls available, with four dials and a dozen buttons offering access to the most frequently-used settings.

G16 is an excellent compact companion. It's a jack of all trades but master of none (although you could argue that its its macro capability is). It operates fast in almost every single way, it's versatile, has good battery life, very comfortable to shoot with, and has an excellent and easy to navigate menu system. The G16 is a well thought out design that benefits from years of G series heritage, and, its at a very nice price right now
