PTool v3.66d public beta released
https://www.personal-view.com/faqs/gh2-hack/ptool-software
You'll need to download firmware from http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/dsc/download/fts/index2.html
StreamParser by Chris Brandin as help tool to analyse AVCHD streams - https://www.personal-view.com/faqs/gh2-hack/ptool-software
Other good idea is also use trial version of Elecard StremEye - http://www.elecard.com/en/download/products.html
Remember that Testers section patches are for testers. Use simple bitrate patches.

@Vitaliy_Kiselev Hope this "you never know" will bring us something new. You never know :)
It is always best to keep opinion with yourself :-) As you never know.
I do not think that there will be a new PTOOL. It is pity, but I think hackers and patch developers seem abandon the project because no need to spend hours of hacking and patching when Panasonic start to include most what people need in Lumix newer generation camera.
Sorry if this has already been answered somewhere before, I've search the forums, FAQs, etc.. to know if we can expect something new from the GH2 hack (or a new ptool version). I know it's an old model and it's probably unlikely because most of the stuff is already on new models like the GH4, but I love my GH2, I've been using it professionally for the last years and a lot of DOPs that I've worked with - even compared with cameras like C300, 5DMKIII or the GH4 - love the look it gives you for the price.
Thanks!
I tryed to open the panasonic's g6__v12.bin (31'983'104 Bytes from 2014/02/04) in the ptool v3.66d (3'105'280 Bytes) and got the message: "wrong file or trying to use a already patched file"...
Looks like panasonic is using Your tools :)
Is there a solution to try?
Thanks a lot Oliver
Nothing will "pop out". It just load settings differently merging them.
Hey, I'm following these instructions from @cblock to merge Sanity with Pasadena but it doesn't work. Could it be the Ptool v3.66? When I press alt+click the merge option doesn't pop out. I tried with Wine under Mac and Windows 7 with bootcam
Thanks
Put the original firmware, ptool exe, Sanity ini & Pasadena ini in the same folder - make sure both ini files are labelled differently (eg: seta.ini & setb.ini)
Run PTool
Load original firmware
Click the corresponding green circle with a letter in it to load Sanity. Sanity is now loaded.
Hold 'Alt' then click the corresponding green circle with a letter in it to MERGE Pasadena.
Save Firmware
Load firmware onto a blank SD card that has been formatted using the GH2
Boot up your GH2 with fresh battery and the SD card with the firmware on it
Go into playback mode and agree to 'Version Up'.
@Vitaliy_Kiselev Maybe you already know ... but I noticed on my GF2, but also on the GH2, that in QVGA MJPG mode the codec is 4.2.2 Planar YUV full scale (VLC-Tools-Info Codec). It would be great if a new version of PTOOL could operate on QVGA.
Seen my mistake! PTools remembers where it last put firmware!
Must be you accidently saved patched file other original firmware or such thing.
Just having an issue trying to use 3.66d. I've downloaded the tool and the Panasonic firmware. Previous PTools have works for me, but in this case I'm getting the following error.
Any suggestions?
Yes. Can't tell you more now.
Vitaliy, it is already more than 18 months after the release of latest PTOOL 3.66D. Do you plan to release a new version of PTOOL in a near future? What would be your suggestion if I would like to buy something for pocket size video camera? Would it be the old TZ10 that is already have firmware hack or other camera such as LX-7 that is still in progress of hacking? Thanks
Maybe it's due to GX1 small form factor. In that small body, heat dissapation could be worse that on other bigger cameras. I have GH2 and had no issues with recording at 88M bitrates on my vaccation in Egypt this summer. There was 53 degrees heat and GH2 won't stop recording.. not a single take..
Thought you might all be interested to hear this - and sorry if it's something you already know a lot about, but I've only recently bought a GX-1 as a second camera to complement my AF-101 (same lens stock for both, same AVCHD codec etc.). And I've only just now signed up to this excellent forum. Using PTool I uprated the video bitrate to the recommended level, which matches the bitrate comning from the AF-101, and I've used it quite happily on several shoots in the UK. Great pictures, same Panasonic look, exactly what I need. And then I come to Zimbabwe, which is where I am at the moment, doing a covert shoot for an NGO in that country. I use SanDisk Extreme cards, never any problem, but in the 30-degree sun in Zim, after a few seconds the error message comes up "MOTION RECORDING WAS STOPPED BECAUSE OF THE WRITE SPEED OF THE CARD" (or something very close to those words). That doesn't make anybody happy in the middle of a shoot in what you could call "sensitive circumstances". After checking everything at least three times, then testing a SanDisk Extreme Pro card with the help of a Harare photo store, full HD recording was fine in the cool of an air-conditioned house, shop or car, but as soon as the camera went into the sun, the error message came up. After a lot of head-scratching, I went into PTool and lowered the data rate back to Panasonic's original, and the camera now records quite happily in full sun and 33 degrees. Interesting. We all know about batteries behaving differently in different temperatures, but SD cards? They and the camera were faultless in the 20 degrees of the UK, but unstable to put it mildly in the heat of an African summer. I hope this little bit of hard-won knowledge may save somebody a sleepless night!
You must have original Panasonic battery in and fully cherged. Format SD card in camera before update. Firmware must be in the root of crad and must have exact name e.g. GX1__V11.bin If you hacked your camera, i think you must use PTool to version increment firmware to make camera accept new firmware.
I jsut went through all the steps correctly to my knowledge, when I put the sd card into my camera and hold the green play button it looks like it flickers for a split second to the firmware panel but then just says NO VALID PICTURE TO PLAY. I tried to do this a couple months ago but did not have the bi. in the root folder. I was able to attempt to load firmware but nothing happened. Could my problem now be a result of that? I tried installing the stock Pana firmware to, same issue. How can I fix this??!! Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.
Please check my message above. It is wrong topic.
Same thing. PM or Development topic.
@Dam4ge I'm just wondering if you're formating your card in the camera to start with, or if the card isn't up to it ? because I suffered similar grief.
Will be plans for G6 Hack? :) Regards.
This topic is not about settings.
deleted.. sorry for OT...
@tetakpatak I did search and couldn't find anything related. I might have used 'crashed' or 'frozen' incorrectly in the search though...not sure exactly how to label it.
@aljimenez I tried that (and not scrolling too quickly over the patch letters), built the firmware and uploaded it...everything went smoothly.
My only trouble now is that my SD card is a bit slow for the Moon T7 patch at the highest setting I think and it crashed the camera. But that I understand, I'll have to upload a patch with a lower bitrate so no worries there.
Thanks!
@Dam4ge you're not first who had that problem. I remember some months ago somebody wrote about that. But I've read it briefly and no idea in which topic it was, use zhe search field (right, up)
@Dam4ge try to go slow. First have a folder with nothing but the ptools exe file and the Panasonic firmware file, and try to run it to see if it works. Then add one hack file to one of the options next and see if it works, etc. I have Win 7 and no such instability here, so be patient, as something is wrong but not obvious yet.
Hey, this is my first time hacking my GH2. I've searched for anyone having this issue and it seems I'm the first?
My whole PC freezes when 3.66d is loaded and I'm browsing the different patches (A, B, C etc)
It's happened 3 times so far, always when reading the patch descriptions, have to do a hard reset.
I'm running windows 7 on a quad core with 8gb of ram, it never really lags or crashes at all.
I'm loading popular patches from Driftwood, Drewnet T9, moon T7, SpizzT6, NebulaT7, red shift etc. and a couple from Mysteron.
I'm not super confidant about hacking my GH2 with this happening. Is it the normal instability of a Beta, if so I haven't found a link to download 3.65 which according to the release notes is the last time anything related to GH2 was affected.
Despite my troubles, thanks for all your hard work! As a filmmaker I'm greatly appreciative of your work even if I haven't yet managed to benefit from it!
Small typo on my last post setting bitrate @ 22 megs for all video modes type avchd/MP4 never fails anything above that on all video modes will randomly get the recording cancelled due to card speed camera then freezes and a battery pull is required....ICP when it does record works fine at 32 megs haven't tested higher bit rates interestingly enough I get the error for write speed more often when using the panaleica 25mm 1.4 and less often using the pana 14/45 attached to my GX1 ...
@vitality My camera was bought in NY it is NTSC and shows japanese on it the video out option comes up on menu only after the patch is applied but it is grayed out and cannot be selected I reverted to original firmware and disappared from menu then reapplied the firmware, I tried the firmware that gives the option on a PAL GX1 of a friend of mine in europe he gets the PAL -> NTSC I do not I only get the video out menu grayed out, as far as video hack going anywhere between 24 and 32 megs AVHCD and MP4 I get random errors of recording cancelled due to speed of card if I put it at 20 megs not a single error I tried several SD card formatted in camera including HSI 45 MB write/read speed all same Issue however when it does record I can play back files in camera no problem both AVHCD and MP4
@Mordae Nice to hear it works, mate!
@tetakpatak, @Vitaliy_Kiselev Just checked and the menu was there, I guess I just missed it last time. The good news though is that the menu works on the PAL version (Finland bought).
@Vitaliy_Kiselev ah, novice member mistake. sorry.
Last sharing my test results tonight. :) As for movie playback freezing goes, the maximum bitrate increase I could use without freezing camera was Video Bitrate FSH/SH -> same as default @ 16000000 Video Bitrate 1080p MP4 -> up to 22000000 (default 20000000. 23000000 returned mixed result ) I didn't try to change 720p settings as I don't use that resolution. The camera can 'record' video fine with higher bitrate (tested upto 42000000), it is only 'viewing the video (of any bitrates) on camera' that freezes the whole system. Doesn't seem like hardware limitation but a bug.
Thank you, and again forgive me if this is repetition of the already known facts. Regards,
@Vitaliy_Kiselev Sorry for the too many posts. One last thing - the freezing on movie playback I mentioned happens only when I touch the avchd bitrate. Mp4 bitrate change doesn't seem to affect the playback.
Thank you.
Nevermind. It seems freezing keeps happening as long as I want to increase any bitrate. Even if I don't increase AVCHD's rate, I need to check the menu to have mp4 bitrate change affected and movie playback freezes.
Mine is U.S. NTSC model.
I reverted back to default firmware and confirmed that 'video out' doesn't show up at all in NTSC cameras, and only after ptool hack with 'PAL-NTSC' on the menu shows up but greyed out.
Another problem is that after increasing bitrate (I doubled bitrates for each mode, which is slightly lower than the recommended value), the camera freezes whenever I try to playback a movie file. (any movie files, even the ones shot with normal bitrate.) I don't know if this is a known issue.
Thank you!
I have GX1 NTSC model. After applying the hack with PAL <-> NTSC on, 'Video Out' menu in the setup is still greyed out and not selectable.
It i closer, but still not complete.
Your camera is Japanese NTSC, right?
@Vitaliy_Kiselev @tetakpatak I have GX1 NTSC model. After applying the hack with PAL <-> NTSC on, 'Video Out' menu in the setup is still greyed out and not selectable.
@elee, @simone9it, @Mordae Guys, did you for sure check in the Ptool option PAL/NTSC before saving the new firmware? I dont own GXx, but for GHx firmwares that option must be checked in the Ptool, otherwise no way of switching between PAL and NTSC.
If I remember correctly, there is no menu item at all. Might be grayed though. Can't remember.
If you can't remember, who can?
@Vitaliy_Kiselev If I remember correctly, there is no menu item at all. Might be grayed though. Can't remember.
Can you explain me in details what is not working. And your camera region. Is camera menu item grayed out?
Hi @Vitality_kiselev and @ elee can you please let me know as well ? would love to know if possible to have the PAL working on a NTSC GX1 camera as well.. I can beta test it if needed thanks again :)
Hi @Vitaliy_Kiselev Does it look likely that the NTSC-PAL switching would be enabled in the next release? If it's restricted by GX1's hardware limitation would you please let me know?
Thanks in advance.
@Vitaliy_Kiselev oh thank you!
I'll look into this.
Same Issue here video out option is disabled/grayed out in the NTSC version of the camera ...I confirmed it works only on a european version of the camera, likely to prevent people from reselling cheap hacked camera's in the european market...kind of sucks I hope this can be changed for our cameras too but I am not holding my breath.
Hi I just got GX1 and used Ptool (thank you for the great tool!)
I have a question though. Is the NTSC-PAL switching not enabled for US (NTSC) GX1 models? I see 'Video out' menu but it is greyed out. Any plan for enabling this in the near future? (If not I'll have to sell this off and buy European version.)
Thank you.
Just forget about this. This was adjustment of some sensor related constants, did not resulted in anything useful. It is old screenshot.
I noticed something that I didn't pay attention until now:
I see this option "Sensor" for very first time, obviously because it doesn't appear when PTool is running on my computer. Is that normal?
Do we have to manipulate with this option and how? Sorry if I'm the one who couldn't find info about it.
I am late to the party on this, but does the hack allow for manual app controls with the GX1?
@anndycl I have not had that issue with any version PTool, including 3.66. I would try re-downloading the files to rule out any issues there.
What method are you using the load them? Which version of PTool did you use previously? Are you using the newest firmware?
Hey guys this is my first post so forgive me if I sound dumb... I ve hack my gh2 a couple times now so I'm not really amateur status. But after I downloaded 3.66 ptools, imy older patches (the go to vaulted ones) will not load in ptools for anything. I can however make my own changes via ptools. Is this a glitch that will be updated or will redownloading the popular patches enable them to work with the new version of ptools? Thanks again Vitaly and company... You guys work wonders.
Chinese bug is quite old, and is related to the fact that camera approach it differently.
I hacked my GX1everything is good but the Languages is Missing Chinese Characters but fix or help me how to do....thx.....i family need......
Used to 3.66d beta twice successfully to apply a Sedna A Q20 patch (1st hack on my GH2 camera) and afterwards a Sanity 5. No apparent issues.
Used Wineskin to create a wrapper based on Wine 1.4.1 stable on Mac OS 10.8.2.
Thanks @Vitaliy_Kiselev
G3 has 16MP sensor. 17MB RAW doesn't sound weird at all.
Hello,
I just hacked my G3, thank you. I'm also taking stills with my camera and I've noticed that the RAW files are quite small (around 17MB), so I suppose there is some sort of compression. I was wondering if there is a chance to remove that compression if any.
Thanks.
Why? (为什么呢?)
Copmputer language - English.
Only English!
And no other.
Please Please Please Fix Chinese Language.....Missing Chinese Characters Thx...
Guys, please note that you use wrong place for such discussion
This is proper one

I notice the if you start upgrade your GH2 firmware with the LCD in its flipped out position, and fold the screen back to the camera body with the screen facing you while it is still in progress, the on-screen UI colour changes from green to blue.
Thought it was interesting.
@rudym
sorry about that I meant to type *I'm typing GH2__V13.bin and I've tried GH2___V13.bin, the computer prompts with with this message wrong file name, camera wont be able to read such file?
@g_sadamoto only change the numbers. ex: GH2__V12.bin to GH2__V13.bin
noobie here needs help - ptools V.3.66d beta won't let me save...I'm typing GH2__V12.bin and I've tried GH2___V12.bin, the computer prompts with with this message wrong file name, camera wont be able to read such file?
Check FAQ links on top, and post questions to Beginners topics.
Ok, so Firmware stays listed by camera as 1.1. Nothing in the camera interface is any different. I can record mp4 in 1080p but the camera freezes if I try to play it back on the camera. AVCHD remains interlaced - but higher bitrate. This is where I'm at but I've no idea if this is how it is supposed to behave so I don't know if this is of any help to development/testing/me.
Like Failflow, I'm confused. I thought this should give me the option to shoot in 1080p? The firmware version is still listed by the camera as 1.1?
Everything will be like before – only IQ will be better ;-)
i tested 3 times different ways to get the hack. i played it on the sdhc card - installed it. but everything is like before! could somebody help me? :(
@mpgxsvcd I think You're looking for this: http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4049/development-plans#Item_22
Something strange. I used Driftwood's GalaXian patch and recorded the MP4 video, which is failed ICP. Then, I downgraded the firmware with my lower bitrate setting (AVCHD high bitrate only). I can playback the same MP4 file (higher bitrate) in camera. It seems that something is linked to the playback mode by Ptool. BTW, the GalaXian patch is really impressive! Well done.:-D
Download latest firmware from panasonic. Download PTool v3.66d, load firmware, open Patches for end users -> Interface and check All Interface Languages. Save firmware and name it e.g. GX1___14.bin copy to SD card and update firmware normal way (power up camera, press Play button and confirm update). After update you will be able to change language to whatever you need...
Yes, of course.
@mjfeliciano here are the changes, also on the first post :)
and the downloads are here: https://www.personal-view.com/faqs/gh2-hack/ptool-software
Where can I find PTool v3.65d?, I'm still using v3.64d '200212'. What's new in v.3.66d beta?
http://www.personal-view.com/faqs
Plus we have few topics with beginners in the topic title.
Hi..i´m new at this forum..i have a G3 and did the firmwareupdate with mr JOFO ´S settings ,the camera did update but the version number still says 1.2..(i did download and install the latest panasonic firmware on the camera 1.2 about 4 weeks ago) how do i know that my new firmware that i named 1.3 is on my camera?..everything looks like it done before...
*** NEW *** Driftwood 'GalaXian'. 12/15 GOP
Here's the GX1 cluster variation provisionally entitled 'GalaXian' setting. Everything is souped up to Cluster v6 GH2 levels but set at 56M all round max, Q target is 18. You probably won't reach those dizzy heights. This features the Cluster v6 scaling matrix set on AVCHD modes. I don't think MP4 mode at level 66 baseline uses the scaling matrices as checked in ptools and Streameye Pro confirms this with matrices = n/a (not applicable) in the headers.
There is NO in-camera playback of MP4 modes at present but they look dramatically better than the stock recordings, AVCHD is unaffected and playsback.
Also features superior audio from @thepalalias at 'pasadenapulse.net'.
Test it out and see how you get on. Who knows, one day, we may get the in-camera playback resolved?! For now I continue testing...
UPDATE: In this release PAL works, NTSC may freeze and is being sorted in the next revision.
I meant official version :)
Still do not understand you.
PTool is publically available.
Of course, it is beta, as we need to figure out this MP4 stuff.
I have a suggestion. Just release it as a final patch
Sorry? What is "final patch" ?
Did you noticed words "public beta" ?
Case 2. Raising FSH/SH failed ICP for MP4 file. Video Bitrate FSH/SH=32000000, Video Bitrate 1080p MP4=20000000
It is also very very interesting.
Case 4. No FSH/SH bitrate selected. Rasing MP4 passed ICP, but the overall bitrate remained only 20Mbps instead of 35Mbps. Video Bitrate 1080p MP4=35000000
This case is meaningless, as FSH patch is requires by any other bitrate patches. See tips in PTool.
I tested only PAL mode.
Case 1. Default bitrate for FSH/SH and 1080p MP4 worked fine. In-Camera-Playback (ICP) passed. Video Bitrate FSH/SH=16000000, Video Bitrate 1080p MP4=20000000
Case 2. Raising FSH/SH failed ICP for MP4 file. Video Bitrate FSH/SH=32000000, Video Bitrate 1080p MP4=20000000
Case 3. Raising MP4 bitrate failed ICP for MP4. Video Bitrate FSH/SH=16000000, Video Bitrate 1080p MP4=35000000
Case 4. No FSH/SH bitrate selected. Rasing MP4 passed ICP, but the overall bitrate remained only 20Mbps instead of 35Mbps. Video Bitrate 1080p MP4=35000000
That'll give some idea to those who want to test more to find more clues for VK.
Known Issues
GX1 has problems playing back MP4 files with increased bitrate.
More testing required to spot the cause.
