New way to sell stuff
  • Last week, a number of Cisco customers began reporting problems with three specific Linksys-branded routers. When owners of the E2700, E3500, or E4500 attempted to log in to their devices, they were asked to login/register using their “Cisco Connect Cloud” account information. The story that’s emerged from this unexpected “upgrade” is a perfect example of how buzzword fixation can lead to extremely poor decisions.

According to Cisco, the Connect Cloud gives users “anytime, anywhere” access to their router, delivers free, new apps, and “will keep expanding with new apps to enrich your connected lifestyle.” The E2700, E3500, and E4500 all shipped with the “Automatic Firmware Update” option selected, which is why so many users found themselves asked to authenticate using a different account with no prior warning. Unplugging the router from the wall restored the old login/password function, but only offered a simplified menu structure that removed or obfuscated control of a number of advanced functions

Read the whole article, it is interesting. And gives some clues about future corporate approaches :-)

I think it is amazing. All the phones, cameras, refrigerators, etc,.. must update automatically, and as Cisco states, firmware can update automatically even if user disabled auto-update :-) You must login only via their services. If you need to change ringtone, or place extra package of milk, buy application in app store.
Each year cloud services must be upgraded and improved making it totally incompatible with older hardware, so all you'll have will be useless junk as you won't able to use it, at all.
And if you managed to break copyright, visit wrong site or write something stupid about gay rights in Mosambique... you know the consequences.. you'll be expelled from all cloud services, thanks to their "truth exchange"(tm) information programs.

  • That's terrible yet not entirely unexpected.

    My linksys runs DDWRT firmware.

  • It's like all new cell phones sold in the USA. They MUST have GPS for tracking. It was said that the law is so that emergency services can find you in case you call for help from a cell phone, but we all know it's really so that the government can find you if you get "out of line" somehow. There are options to turn the GPS system "off", but we also know that it can be enabled remotely..
