Nikon as openly racist company
  • Nikon South Africa is promising changes after sparking controversy with its latest roster of influencers. In a country in which over 75% of the population is Black and less than 9% is white, the group of new South Africans representing the brand featured just one Black photographer.

Nikon South Africa released a video introducing its new influencers to promote the Nikon Z50 mirrorless camera in the country. The video was a teaser for a new campaign to share the influencers’ adventures and moments, and it prominently highlighted a series of white photographers on the roster. The only Black influencer, Austin Malema, appeared in the video mostly to say his name.

Actually posts with demand to add more black influencers are open racism. If white guys that are selected are better in their skill and even if it is no black inflencer at all - it is fair. And same in reverse, if in almost only white country you have only black influencers because they do better stuff and better communicate - it is also fair.

You need to provide real life improvement for black people, get them access to photo tools from the small age and so on - to have them be fairy represented among the top performance professionals. And it is hard hing to do and requires change in social system. But crowd frequently wants to perform surgery via ass hole. Much simpler is to just demant certain percentage to be added by force. But it is open shitty racism, quite opposite to the real goal of black people.

  • I think you're completely missing the point Vitaliy. It's that white people are chosen over black people regardless of the skill of the black people. You really think these 6 'influencers' are the best South Africa has to offer?

OK. Lets try to break your mass media induced barrier from other side.

In SA what percentage of black people own good camera and have funds to practice and travel in different countries, make exhibitions and so on? And what about white people, is percentage different (of course it is very different!)?

I want to underscore that people who demand such easy solution to real complex problems are not on the side of black people, instead they are same racists, they just became much smarter and they know that for openly expressing their racist ideas they'll be slapped.

Compare cost and effort to rise overall life level and provide necessary tools for blakc to compete on equal terms and offort to just get few amazing and active photographers who overcome all this hurdles and declare that all is ok.

  • I agree with both of you - its a little of both actually.
