    2.7K 120p with stabilization is still among the best unique features of the GoPro Hero 8. And the quality is excellent.

    And, you can map where you were located using the built-in GPS.

    This is what it adds (from the GoPro Site):

    1. ReelSteady GO Optimization This firmware optimizes HERO8 Black’s in-camera rolling shutter correction to be more suitable for ReelSteady GO stabilization. This will guarantee you get the best post-stabilization out of your HERO8 Black.

    2. QR Codes for Camera Control We developed a QR code method to control HERO8 Black cameras. This expands HERO8 Black capabilities to introduce time-sensitive, power-intensive content creation use cases—think multi-day, even multi-week, time lapses and remote control that reaches far beyond the confines of WiFi connectivity. All you have to do is point your camera at the QR code and it will trigger one of the key features below depending on the code’s intention.

    QR code-enabled features include: Wake-up timer for remote start capture Save favorite modes as a visual preset/QR code Motion detection start/stop — only capture video when something is happening Speed detection start/stop — use GPS to determine your speed and automatically start capture at a defined speed Camera scripting — e.g. shoot a time lapse of a construction site but only during daylight hours (and many other detailed camera controls) Personalize your GoPro with owner information Larger chapters for fewer files in long video captures.     Great! Except, after the install of the new firmware, ReelSteady GO no longer recognizes the metadata of the clips and will not work! So far the other features work - I now have my name in the metadata and when the camera turns on, my name appears briefly. And I synched the time exactly by just pointing the camera at a live QR code on my phone.

    It comes as no surpise as the Hero 8 "mods" now have been pushed back.

    Officical "pre order dates":

    Media Mod = january 2020.

    Display Mod = february 2020.

    As these are for pre orders, the actual products could be shipping in february / march. If no further delays are incurred.

    The pennants show how windy the area was. Yet the surf sounds and announcements come through pretty well.

    UPDATE: Hypoxic has informed me that the firmware code seems to imply that the output will be "keyed" to the GoPro dongle (aka "mod") only. So no generic HDMI dongle will be accepted.

    Have anyone tried their Hero8 with a universal USB-C to HDMI dongle?

    As the camera supports the HDMI over USB-C protocol this should work unless GoPro has but in some proprietary stuff.

    It should be noted that the Hero8 cost cutting measures include:

    • Supplied with USB2.0 cable (Hero7/6 was supplied with USB3.0)

    • Only one adhesive mount (curved) included (all GoPros up until Hero7 had both flat and curved mounts).

    This is in addition to the other cost cutting production changes like non-removable front glass and the new finge rmounts which toss out the frame and one of the doors.
