NEW YORK, May 29, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- B&H Photo would like to share the official announcement of the DJI Ronin-S 3-Axis Gimbal Stabilizer, a lithe, single-handed tool used to smooth movement when shooting video with a DSLR or mirrorless camera. DJI is daring us to move, and the Ronin-S makes that dare easy to accomplish with its clean and high performance, for camera systems weighing up to 7.9 lb. It also offers one-handed design, enabling simple, intuitive operation, and a slimmer profile for working in confined spaces with ease.

Among the major advantages provided by the Ronin-S is a design that moves the roll axis to a 45-degree angle, ensuring there is a clean line of sight to the camera's rear screen for monitoring purposes. Also, it is a part of DJI's constantly growing ecosystem, and will offer immediate support for plenty of their accessories, including the Master Wheels and Master Force. It has a dual handle system, multiple types of wireless receivers, a focus control setup, and more. Also included are standard mounting points for attaching useful tools like microphones and lights.

Three operational modes are available for added versatility--underslung, upright, and flashlight. Each of these is determined by the desired grip and angle of the shot, and make it more comfortable to operate for longer periods of time. The gimbal can even be removed from the handle and mounted on other supports, such as a jib or RC car, for which there is a dedicated mode to ensure silky smooth motion. A Sport Mode can be enabled for moments of fast-paced action.

To provide an excellent operating experience, the Ronin-S offers multiple control options, including a precise joystick located on the handle, with multiple customizable parameters. Users will enjoy support for camera control as well, with the ability to connect to select Canon, Sony, Nikon, and other systems where they can adjust focus settings, initiate recording and more without taking their hands off the Ronin-S. Other settings include a Virtual Joystick option, Time-Lapse, Track, and Panorama modes.

A wide range of movement is possible with this gimbal, including continuous 360 degrees of rotation, tilt from -95 to 185 degrees, and a complete 360 degrees of roll in a Roll 360 mode that will come in handy for rapid movement and repositioning of your camera. Additionally, it is powered by a rechargeable 18650 2400mAh Li-ion polymer battery pack that will operate for hours on a single charge, while Bluetooth 4.0 and USB Type-C connections permit the stabilizer to be connected directly to mobile devices and computers.

DJI, the world’s leader in creative camera technology, today revealed the pricing and availability of the Ronin-S, DJI’s first single-handed stabilizer for DSLR and mirrorless camera systems. The Ronin-S will retail for $699 USD with pre-orders beginning May 29 at www.dji.com, DJI flagship stores and authorized dealers worldwide, with shipments starting in late June.

About the Ronin-S

Utilizing DJI’s powerful three-axis gimbal technology, the Ronin-S delivers smooth, shake-free video and crisp photos, adding a cinematic and professional look to your work.

Powerful high-torque motors support a payload of 8 pounds to accommodate the most popular camera and lens combinations including the Canon 1D and 5D, Panasonic GH and Sony Alpha series. Its stabilization system compensates for zoom lenses with external zooming barrels and higher magnification ratios, while its advanced stabilization algorithms work with both in-camera and in-lens optical stabilization technology. When mounted to a vehicle, the maximum operation speed has been tested at 47mph with a Panasonic GH5 and 50mm lens utilizing an optional top hotshoe bracket.

Capturing stabilized video has never been easier because the Ronin-S was designed for easy setup and use. A new Push Mode lets you adjust the pan, tilt and roll axis by hand while the Ronin-S is powered on and an Auto Tune function automatically adjusts the strength of the motors to speed up gear prep so you can spend more time filming and less time setting up your gear. The Ronin-S has a comfortable, ergonomic design that helps capture smooth cinematic movements from upright to flashlight mode to underslung positions without obstructing the camera’s display. Ronin-S also features DJI’s intelligent battery system that is built into the handle and has an operating time of 12 hours.

The high-precision joystick changes the camera position to help frame your shot perfectly while a host of dedicated buttons allow operators to control various settings such as toggling between SmoothTrack profiles or to begin and stop recording.* An included Focus Wheel can be mounted to either side of the handle via the 8-pin ports on each side and a new Sport mode allows seamless transitions to fast movements with tight and quick subject following speed.

Harness intelligent shooting modes and advanced customization on the Ronin-S through the DJI Ronin mobile app such as creating complex camera moves automatically like Panorama, Motionlapse, Timelapse and Track that lets you designate specific camera positions in a scene and rotate between them on demand. Operators can also change SmoothTrack settings including the Speed, Acceleration and Deadband for each axis, save them in three profiles and toggle between them with the dedicated M button on the Ronin-S. Vital camera settings can be directly adjusted via the Ronin app and the optional Focus Command Center accessory allows for quick changes when needed.*

Ronin-S uses an industry standard Manfrotto quick release system and is compatible with a variety of DJI Pro Accessories to capture any scene and expand your creative freedom on set or on location. Supported optional accessories include a Focus Command Center consisting of a menu screen allowing for advanced gimbal, camera, and focus control without a mobile device; DJI Force Pro; DJI Master Wheels; the Ronin 2 remote controller; and an external focus motor for manual lenses that pairs with the included Focus Wheel. The Ronin-S can also be used with the DJI vehicle mount, jib mount and the dual-handle system for when an added level of comfort and stability is required.

From a brand new external focus motor to pull focus on lenses manually to the Command Unit offering quick access to settings, Ronin-S users now have a host of exciting new tools to help capture their creative vision.

The DJI Ronin-S Focus Motor brings control to manual lenses that do not have internal adjustment. Utilizing the Ronin-S Focus Wheel, operators have the option to position the new Focus Motor on the focus ring to quickly adjust while filming. Seamless and precise control over the lens is easily achieved thanks to .02 degrees of accuracy. The Focus Motor includes two essential components, a Rod Mount Set which mounts the Focus Motor to Ronin-S and the Focus Gear Strip that fits around a wide array of lenses. The Ronin-S Focus Motor allows for precise control over a wide variety of lenses and expands the creative freedom for professionals.

For operators who need to control Ronin-S in fast moving situations, the Command Unit brings quick access to Ronin-S through a compact and bright screen that attaches to the side of Ronin-S. The Ronin-S BG37 Grip powers Ronin-S via a 2400mAh built-in battery, offering up to 12 hours of use, designed to meet the needs of camera professionals who are seeking tools for extended shoots.

A new Top Hotshoe Bracket securely mounts a DLSR camera to the Ronin-S, perfect for shooting scenarios when mounting the gimbal to a vehicle to shoot car chase scenes or fast-moving objects. It also comes with a cold shoe mount that allows users to mount external accessories during operation as well as an additional mounting point for the Ronin-S Focus Rod mount.

This Extended Lens Support is designed for use with both standard sized cameras as well as larger camera systems. With a relatively wide adjustable range, the Extended Lens Support helps to firmly secure the camera on the Ronin-S and ensure more optimal shooting performance when the included support is not long enough.

I wonder if there is a cable to extend the 8 pin port on the gimbal, so one can mount the focus wheel on a dual handle.

I am trying to pair the Ronin S with a 4th-Axis Stabilizer and a Ready Rig.

Some other questions that swirl around in my head: I red that you can not control focus via Sbus. Is this true? What about CAN Bus? Are there in general any information available about the DJI protocols?

• Added Auto 3D Roll 360. When the gimbal is in 3D Roll 360 mode, push the joystick left or right twice to enable * Auto 3D Roll 360. The gimbal rotates continuously without needing to hold the joystick. Press the trigger twice to stop Auto 3D Roll 360.
• Added video recording, autofocus, and focus pull support for Sony A7R4 cameras with supported E-mount lenses using a Multi-Camera Control Cable (MCC-C). To use autofocus on the A7R4, press halfway down on the camera control button of the gimbal.
