GH2 + 35-100mm + GoPro 3 Black does BMX Freestyle
  • Here is a set of highlights from a local BMX competition that I filmed with my GH2 + 35-100mm F2.8 @ F2.8 and my new GoPro 3 Black mounted to the hot shoe. The clicking noise in some of the clips is the GH2 taking stills while the GoPro Recorded video.

    I know the editing is poor in this video. I shot WAY TOO MANY things this weekend and just didn't have time to do the editing justice. Take it for what it is. Just a bunch of samples from both cameras.

    I tried editing the colors on the first few clips but after that I just didn't have time. I shot in 720p 60 FPS and F2.8 for the GH2 shots(Can you tell which one those are?). And I shot at 720p @ 120 FPS Narrow angle non-Protune, 720p @ 120 FPS Wide angle Pro-tune, 1080p @ 60 FPS Medium Angle Pro-tune, and 2.7K @ 30 FPS Pro-tune for the Go-Pro 3.

    Can you tell which clips are what resolution and frame rates for the GoPro? Hint, several of the clips having very bad aliasing in the fence in the background. That is eliminated by using a narrower field of view.

  • The differences are huge - the GoPro delivers much match while the GH2 is very clean

    The 720@120 WA shots are fairly obvious. Soft and very wide. Aliased.

    720@120 NA !PT 3.44-3.56 Purple shirt forward flip to stack 4.13-4.21 Orange shirt (how you do that) 4.22-4.39 Green helmet forward flip

    1080@60 MA PT 0.06-0.24 Purple shirt forward flip punches air 2.10-2.15 Backflip 2.18-2.35 Minor stack and flip to feet (great action)

    I think all the nice sharp shots with the harsh highlights are from the GH2. It was at times a bit alarming to see the GH2 throwing bits at the fence and tree leaves when the focus was not quite on the rider. As you mentioned F4 may help the autofocus. 4.04-4.13 Loved the rider and bike landing on their own shadow, has to be GH2. 2.56-3.11 Purple shirt forward flip punches air (great shot)

    Can you give me a clue which are the 2.7K shots because I had a hard time finding a likely match. Were they cropped?

    0.00-0.03 Crowd (this is only one I thought could be 2.7k (if so not that good really)

  • Very nice - Did you have any of the previous GoPro models? (If so, how does it compare?). I have the Hero2 now and have been considering the upgrade.

    You did very well. You got almost all of them right.

    Yes the first wide field opening shot is 2.7k @ 30 FPS. The optimal focus point for the GP3 is not at infinity so wide field lower light shots like this are not very good. That is what I put that clip in there and to show overall what the park looked like. I agree that clip doesn’t look good but it is the only wide field clip I had.

    Like you said the 720p shots are very soft and you can see the aliasing in the fence for those shots. The ones that have a lot of contrast are shot with Protune off and the field of view set to narrow. That prevents a lot of the aliasing but it is still there.

    The GH2 shots have too much contrast. I agree. I was trying to match the contrast of the GP3 non Protune mode since I wanted to limit the aliasing and still have 120p for slow motion. The GH3 with the high dynamic range mode will be a better option. Also I have given up on using anything but the Protune modes.

    Here are the specs for some of the clips. Pay attention to clips 3, 5, 6, 11, 13, 16, 18, 19, 23, 24, 25, 26, 29, 30, 31, and 32. If you are interested in seeing what all of the modes look like then these clips should help you determine that.

    Clip 23 2.7K(3:16 Into the video) 360 close up GP3 2.7K @ 30 FPS Protune Wide Angle looks pretty good to me. This is the type of shot this camera was made for. Slow motion close up.

    Clip 24 Backflip(3:20) GP3 720p @ 120 FPS Non-Protune Narrow Angle of view no Aliasing but way too much contrast. You cannot recover the dark areas in post processing. They are clipped beyond repair.

    Clip 25 360 two riders GP3 720p @ 120 FPS Protune Wide Angle of view lots of Aliasing but the contrast is better than Clip 24.

    Clip 26 2.7K(3:36 Into the video) 360 GP3 2.7K @ 30 FPS Protune Wide Angle No aliasing. Compare this clip to clip 25 with all of the aliasing. If you are not going to do slow motion then the 2.7K mode works better than the 720p mode.

    Clip 27 Missed air Close Up GP3 720p @ 120 FPS Protune Massive Aliasing in background fence.

    Clip 28 GP3 Front flip 720p @ 120 FPS Non-protune Narrow angle of view

    Clip 29 GP3 Cash Roll 720p @ 120 FPS Protune Wide angle of view. This was zoomed in post processing so it lost all resolution. I would have much rather shot 720p @ 120 FPS Non-Protune Narrow angle of view or just used the GH2 as the next clip shows.

    Clip 30 Cash Roll GH2 720p @ 60 FPS Standard Color Mode

    Clip 31 GP3 Flair 720p @ 120 FPS Non-protune Narrow angle of view. Don’t use 120 FPS mode in shaded areas. The noise reduction destroys all resolution.

    Clip 32(4:25) GP3 Backflip 720p @ 120 FPS Non-protune Narrow angle of view. No Aliasing in fence.

    Clip 33 Front Flip GH2 720p @ 60 FPS Standard Color Mode

    I have the GoPro 1 and it is total junk compared to the GP3. The GP1 is no better than my phone in terms of quality. It is very small and durable though.

  • @mpgxsvcd Thanks for the list. I'm watching this fullscreen on a 2560x1600 monitor so I'm getting a good look at the Youtube compression. I gotta say the 1080p@60 footage is the stuff that I think looks best out of all the modes you shot using the GP3. Putting a bunch of GP units in the course and remote controlling them would be pretty fun.

    The closeups you get with the GH2 + 35-100mm are pretty nice too. I think one of the Panasonic 1/3" cams would also do well in light like this.
