Large Format Sensor for creative expression

Large Format APS-C HD CMOS Sensor for high quality, creative moving images and shallow depth of field control. The large format Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor gives the user creative freedom when shooting Full HD movies and high-quality still photos.

Unique design for versatile shooting options

The unique design of the NEX-EA50EH further adds to the camcorder’s versatility. When the shoulder pad is extended, the camcorder can be balanced on the shoulder giving added stability for longer shooting times. Alternatively, when the shoulder pad is returned to its original position, the camcorder becomes compact enough to use in various handheld styles, allowing users to capture a wide variety of shots.

    Interchangeable E-mount lens System

The NEX-EA50EH incorporates the Sony E-mount interchangeable lens system, which enables auto focus, auto exposure and stabilisation during shooting. With its short flange back distance, it is possible to attach both established A-mount lenses via the LA-EA2 lens mount adapter, and an unrivalled choice of other brands lenses using third-party adapters.

    Newly developed powered zoom lens

The NEX-EA50EH camcorder comes with the newly developed Power Zoom E-mount lens E PZ 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS SELP18200. It features auto focus, continuous variable iris and Optical Steady Shot image stabilisation with Active Mode, making it ideal for shooting moving images. It is electronically controlled by both the zoom rocker lever on the camcorder grip and top handle. Film-makers can achieve a constant zoom speed and smooth, slow zoom, both of which can be difficult to accomplish with manual zoom lenses. In addition, using fixed focal length lenses users can simulate a zoom effect using the smart digital zoom function, ensuring fast-paced shots are never missed.

Part of the professional NXCAM camcorder range

The NEX-EA50EH features a range of professional functions usually associated with NXCAM camcorders, such as 2-channel XLR audio, Linear PCM audio, time code, user bit and built-in GPS.

    16.1 megapixel still image capture

By capturing 16.1 megapixel still pictures with RAW format support, the camcorder offers higher picture quality and rich post-processing capabilities. In addition, the NEX-EA50EH has a built-in mechanical shutter to eliminate shutter-induced blur during long exposures while capturing still pictures.

A variety of recording media options

Sony’s HXR-FMU128 flash memory unit can dock directly to the camcorder for recording an immediate backup. The camcorder is compatible with the new Mirroring Memory Stick (MS-PX64/32/16) which is the world’s first memory card featuring a “Mirroring” function. This enables the card to deliver high reliability and data security through a dual recording (mirroring) function. This new professional memory card will be available in 3 different capacities: 16GB; 32GB and 64GB.

  • Hi, I have just been asking about this camera ono another site.

From the info supplied, I take it that because it has a CMOS sensor, there will be rolling shutter issues - or does the mechanical shutter actually eliminate this problem?

It will cost more than Black Magic's Camera, but it doesn't seem to capture RAW uncompressed video...

Looks pretty good though, will be interesting to see how it fairs in comparison with other cameras at this price.

With time this area progresses. Sensors become faster.

Most people really have no need for RAW video.

  • Yeah, I think I'l be fine with the GH2, the more time goes by that I spend looking at different cameras, the more I am sure that the GH2 will do everything (and more) that I want it to for the foreseeable future.

RAW video sounds great but when I think more about it, it means more storage space is taken up. I guess the main advantage of having such ability is in post production when you go to grade/correct the footage how you like it... there is more scope to drastically alter the image without artefacts occurring. But I have seen a lot can be done with GH2 footage through colour correction and so on.. Thanks for the info & this site is brilliant.

  • This looks like an FS100/700 in a more traditional video camera body. Kudos to Sony for giving people a choice. I hope the picture quality is as good as an FS700. However, the sensor may be different and have smaller pixels. The FS700 has a 11.6MP 'Super-35mm' sensor. No spec on the sensor in this new camera, but they say it takes "16.1 megapixel still pictures with RAW format support". That would imply a 16.1 megapixel sensor.

  • I found an answer to my own question. Here's a quote from Alister Chapman on dvinfo.net

"No, not rumour at all. Matt was at a product presentation hosted by a product manager from Sony where it was clearly stated that the sensor is the same APS-C sensor as the VG20/NEX5N with the same Optical Filter optimised for a stills camera and as a result similar aliasing and moire levels.

This is a budget camera, better suited to video than a 5D or other DSLR and with pro video features like XLR audio, shoulder mount, a decent well placed EVF etc normally only found on more expensive cameras and a new servo zoom (based on the 18-200mm E-mount kit lens) all for less than £3K. I know many that would probably pay the best part of that just for the lens.

Is it perfect, no, but then there is no such thing as a perfect camera because what's perfect for one person is not perfect for the next, but for many lower budget people I think this will be just what they are looking for. I can see it being very popular with wedding and event videographers as well as schools and colleges etc where they can buy 4 of these for the price of an F3 and getting the ultimate image quality is not paramount."

  • So it's a Semi Pro version of the VG20. I just wish they gave the cam a bit more Image Quality, but I guess if it was a shoulder mount FS100, then it would be even more expensive. Still don't know why they couldn't include ND filter. How much more could it cost to add an ND filter?

  • It's a big VG20 (nex5n)... no Super35 as FS100.

Still an interesting camera and lens as well.

  • A camcorder for sony Z1 fans who didnt jump in the FS100 wagon !

  • That sony promo vid is really funny. footage looks really video-y, by the way.

  • Yeah sure it took two years to tune that plastic trumpet XD

  • Since this camera has interchangeable E-mount lens system, it means that with a right adapter mount, it has become the FS-100 with more ergonomic features right? Can I really make use of Nikkor manual lenses?

This should have been out before I heavily invested in my old FX1 and SGBlade at one point in 2008!! Damn it!

  • @kicap: No it is not FS100 by any means... it is rathen NEX 5N or VG20...

  • I had the chance to handle one of these. Very lightweight body, seems a little too light. but it is a lovely ergonomic design, great balance with a canon 24mm f1.4L. Same image quality as the nex 5n, nex5r and nex6. but the proper audio interface and the handling makes it a better choice than the vg900 i think.

  • Was hunting for this thread, couldn't find it so started one, but VK closed it. Glad this thread resurfaced. Ok back to my original question. HDMI output is it 8bit 4:2:0 or 4:2:2? Seeing it's AVCHD, I would think its 4:2:0
