Wow, about to pull the trigger on a 17mm Canon Tilt Shift...now must think...
Ok guys, I'm going to sound like an idiot here. What's the advantage in using these with video? I get the stills reason, is it the same for video?
@vicharris - What COULDN'T you do with a TS lens and video. They are so sweet. Watch a music video from the 80s -- they used tilt-shift lenses to great effect. Or go all Citizen Kane and use the TS lens for deep focus. Or a little more mundane, shoot architectural videos that keep the entire building in focus. I regularly shoot stills and video of products where a TS system would be a godsend.
We recently used the Canon set to do this:
It's being used in almost every jib shot to straighten out architectural lines, and there are some overt uses like the miniature effect, as well.
The perspective control doesn't work quite the same way as it does in stills when the camera is moving, of course, but it is possible to find a balance that is a lot better looking than a normal wide.
I have been essentially faking it with a low-distorsion 18mm down here in Panama where a quality touch to interiors with resorts and real estate is unusual enough that no one seems to notice my lines converging, but I do, and for 'real' architectural work, I need a tilt shift. I'm actually going to order the 17mm today or tomorrow. I'm extremely intrigued by this Samyang, I love my 24mm and 85mm, great optics, great built, but when you start comparing 17mm and 24mm fields of view for interiors I really need the 17mm.
For exteriors, or video, I'd grab this in a heartbeat and save $1,300+.
Vincent Laforet uses Tilt-shifts in both still and video to great effect, I believe his book or iPad app have more information.
Thanks guys. I'll look for some more info on youtube or vimeo. Looks pretty cool!
Rokinon vs Canon 24mm Tilt Shift Lens
My overall conclusion was that you have to look pretty hard to see the differences, so the Rokinon impressed me quite a bit. Really all that I could fault the Rokinon for was a seemingly inferior bokeh and the fact that it was a little darker. Image quality wise I’d call it “as good as” Canon.

Impressive details this lens produces stopped down, it’s very good between f5.6-8.
What this Rokinon has done is open the floodgates to the world of Perspective Control imagery for photographers that have otherwise avoided these magnificent lenses due to to the sheer cost of them. For instance, Canon’s mkII version of the 24mm f3.5L TS-E costs a whopping $2200, a full $1200 MORE than the Rokinon. When you consider what they have accomplished with their lens and delivered it for under $1k, we find that to be pretty astonishing.
