  • they messed up with math in their 3rd chart. which doesn't serve their purpose well.

  • @GOODEMPIRE

    Where specifically you see error?

  • 277 million to 232 execs. they inverted the equation for some reason. and got "850 000 subscribers."

  • @GOODEMPIRE

Yep. I just looked at the thirt part (I mean with number 3), and couldn't get your notice.

  • The implication here is that these conglomerates work in unison and have a specific agenda. The only agenda I know of is market share and ratings. You'd never get these guys to line up behind anything more complicated than that. Also, NEWS is defined as anything that interests people. So there's a chicken versus egg argument that you're not willing to even consider. That the news follows people is more compelling than the media is exerting some sort of George Orwell mind control imo. Real life is random, not the Matrix. And what about the independence of journalists? That's something drilled into every Journalism student on the planet and is why you have executions of journalists in places like Mexico. You can't just pretend these things don't exist to fit a conspiracy narrative.

    I laughted here.

Independence from whom? All journalists I know (including, and especially, western ones) are absolutely dependent guys. Most of their life they obey the orders, as in army, as they are, in reality, an informational army doing their job.

  • @Vitaliy_Kiselev Can you give similar data set for Russia, China and the example of Syria?

  • I laughted here.

Well the joke is on you. There is simply no accounting for human taste. Hollywood can't even predict it, how else to explain JOHN CARTER? Why does Kim Kardashian dominate the media?

This isn't the Matrix. You cannot neatly package the world into a neat little box.

  • There is simply no accounting for human taste

No one is accounting anything. They are forming it.
Your whole model of the world around you is formed in your head.
If you listen and watch media for years you make the certain model.
    Generally, it is their goal.
In any talk with people who watched media owned by corporations above you can quickly catch same words, same logic and same approaches. Yet all of them declare that they "independently" got to this opinion.

Hollywood can't even predict it, how else to explain JOHN CARTER? Why does Kim Kardashian dominate the media?

I really suggest to read something how Hollywood and its financing works. And how random it can be :-)

Kim Kardashian. LOL. You presented yourself best example of my point. How you can feed the people by bullshit for years if you control media.

  • Don't know why they're so pessimistic. The privately produced cat videos on youtube are giving Time Warner and Rupert Murdoch a run for their money.

  • I really suggest to read something how Hollywood and its financing works. And how random it can be :-)

Trust, I've read many account of adventure in film financing. Many Hollywood feature films fail. That's a fact. Or is there a mysterious off the books elite that actually profits from box office failures?

Human taste is random. Hollywood bases investments on what people like or what they think they will like. They can focus group things but ultimately it's human taste. You cannot make people drink and enjoy sour milk.

If you listen and watch media for years you make the certain model.

As I've said, my model is that the world is random, no real model at all. You are the one with the tight narrative in your head who makes news events confirm the model.

  • Trust, I've read many account of adventure in film financing. Many Hollywood feature films fail. That's a fact. Or is there a mysterious off the books elite that actually profits from box office failures?

I still suggest to read something.
None of Hollywood stuff is random.

    Human taste is random.

Human taste is extremely far from random.

As I've said, my model is that the world is random, no real model at all. You are the one with the tight narrative in your head who makes news events confirm the model.

Fun to read this from the guy with model made from concrete in his head :-)

  • The best infographic I could find that represents the media is this one.

  • Just normal i'd say.... in any modern system, information is what drives people (there's even a physics theory which states that the basic construction block of anything is information). Whatever political system is in place, the information industry must serve it because one helps the other... untill the people feel too much difference between what the media say and what they experience in day-to-day life (unless an independant media starts its own revolution).

And democracy thrives even more on this that to be a fully active democratic citizen, every individual should have access to as much information as possible (not just should, but MUST). Unfortunately, media industry does not measure its success by the quality of the democratic system, but rather by the quality of its profit margin.

  • Human taste is extremely far from random.

I concede this, but we are obviously a long way from the ability to predict it with any accuracy. JOHN CARTER. GIGLI. 13th WARRIOR

Or perhaps you have some evidence that Hollywood intentionally makes box office bombs?

  • I'm with @brianluce here. I can see that the overall message you get from the media might influence your way of seeing the world, but I can't believe the media is any sort of conspiracy - they're not that organised. Surely they're just a bunch of competing business people protecting their intellectual assets and market share, while trying to keep costs down as much as possible. They seem to get their marketing wrong as often as they get it right. My greatest hope, though, is that we can be liberated from the stranglehold of these big media companies, so we can freely produce as well as consume - but that might just be a dream!

  • I can't believe the media is any sort of conspiracy - they're not that organised

Guys, you so like word "conspiracy". I am sure you can guess where you got the idea to use it in inappropriate places? I also like to see "not that organised" examples. May be 8/8 some of your mass media somehow had different position? May be they even called mr. president the criminal who must be prosecuted for that he done in Libya? No? How can it be? In this democratic(tm) and "we fight for freedom" companies? No, of course it is just completely independent positions that somehow always match.

My greatest hope, though, is that we can be liberated from the stranglehold of these big media companies, so we can freely produce as well as consume - but that might just be a dream!

Yep, it is just a dream. In current system.

  • You don't need a "conspiracy theory" to explain this collective behavior, any more than casinos engage in a world-wide conspiracy to take your money away from you.

Making money, preserving the interests of the monied, and ensuring the compliance of the population are not a hidden agenda of media conglomerates. These companies don't have to meet in dark rooms to arrive at these behaviors, they're a natural result of the corporate/conglomerate structure.

  • @brianluce , I'll have to agree with @Vitaliy_Kiselev here, as I subscribe to a would-be Marxist understanding of how objective material forces produce culture and cultural artefacts. Taste is produced. Culture is produced. Start by reading some Karl Marx (it will be good for you. Coppola is doing it, and many other clever people read him too.) then graduate to more complex philosophers and social scientists. This is not a "Conspiracy Theory", this is what is known as Critical Theory. To put it in simple words, first they dumb you down, then they shape your opinion, then they ask your opinion -- conduct polls and invite you to participate in ritualistic voting for the puppet on the left or the puppet on the right. It's a closed logical loop - a tautology. And the most obscene thing is that they call it "Democracy", which is an insult to the principle.

The Universe may be "random". Hollywood most definitely is not - that's just not how Kapital works - that's not it's logic.

As to why Kim Kardashian dominates? ;D Ha-HA-HA I'll have to be more playful on this one .... cause she's a sexy foxy smoking-hot Armenian chick - but you can go to Armenia and find entire cities filled with chicks far hoter than Kim, the only "drawback" (or maybe advantage) is that they're not sluts like Kim Kardashian.

  • If you don't want your news twisted, watch the local news from the big 4 tv news or independent stations. Not sure how it is for the big markets like LA and NY, but local news isn't twisted by corporate orders, except for image and the shows are written and advertised for a certain demographic. Don't try to disagree because this is true.

  • good quote from Man on Fire movie:

Fuentes: You know, I-I'm a professional.
Creasy: That's what everybody keeps saying. "I'm just a professional". Everybody keeps saying that to me. "I'm just a professional", "I'm just a professional". I'm getting sick and tired of hearing that.

This is exactly about media and journalists. Some of them, being criminal gang, kill with words. They sow lies and reap deaths. But if something happens to them during their work... They are just professionals. Yeah, yeah.

  • Overall, the top 10 publishers — together owning around 60 news sites — account for 47% of total online traffic to news content last year, with the next-biggest 140 publishers accounting for most of the other half, SimilarWeb found

  • Where do you get your news? Many are getting it from Twitter since no one trusts big media. How about AJ?

  • 62 percent of U.S. adults get their news from social media, says report

As expected, the top social media news source is Facebook.
