Designed to produce crisp, high-impact close-ups and portraits, the new FE 90mm F2.8 Macro G OSS lens delivers an impressive blend of clarity, detail and smooth background
The first mid-telephoto macro lens for the α E-mount line, the FE 90mm F2.8 Macro G OSS features built-in Optical SteadyShot (OSS) image stabilization, allowing for pin-sharp images at up to 1:1 magnification, even when shooting handheld. The smooth, quiet Direct Drive SSM (DDSSM) mechanism drives two ‘floating' focus groups independently, ensuring extremely precise focus positioning that's crucial for macro photography.
The new macro lens maintains the same overall length at all focal distances – very helpful for macro shooting – and has a focus hold button and sliding focus ring that can instantly switch between manual and auto focus1. It is also dust and moisture resistant.
Sharpness is really very impressive. Center results are excellent from F2.8 to F16, remaining very good even at F22 as diffraction starts to take the edge off things. Edge sharpness is very good level at f/2.8 and is excellent from F4 to F16. At F22 diffraction reduces edge sharpness but results remain good.

It’s really difficult to find a fault with the 90mm f/2.8. Yes, we can find slight weaknesses by pixel peeping and measuring, but in terms of actual image results, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that you’re simply not going to be disappointed with the results this lens produces. They’re crisp, contrasty, and devoid of any significant visual problems.
The Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 G OSS macro performed great on the Sony A7R II already so it doesn't come as a surprise that it is even a bit better on an 24mp APS-C camera. In terms of sharpness the Sony lens is already impressive at f/2.8 and tack sharp across the image frame in the f/4-f/8 range .
In terms of optical quality it is easily playing on the same levels as its DSLR counterparts. In terms of sharpness the Sony lens has probably surpassed them. The center quality is excellent at f/2.8 and extreme at f/4 and f/5.6. Furthermore the borders/corners are also impressive especially considering the high density sensor used for the tests. Lateral CAs are generally a non-issue.
