Panasonic DC-S5 - expensive APS-C camera in disguise

  • The AF better works on par with other systems, 'cause otherwise a lot of users will start planning to change gear, I think. And if Panny does not prove(!) it's commitment to MFT by at least opening a window to the GH6's future (if that exists), again a lot of users will start rethinking their road ahead. After they launched a so-called dedicated 'VLOG-camera' without Ibis, it's difficult not to lose confidence in them.

  • Panasonic is pleased to announce that they will hold an online launch event for the new full-frame mirrorless camera LUMIX S5. It will be unveiled at www.panasonic.com/global/consumer/lumix/s/s5.html on Wednesday, September 2, 2020, at 10:00 EDT. Panasonic is committed to meeting the passionate demands of all creators through its LUMIX brand, and the new LUMIX S5 is one of the embodiments of this commitment.

More information will be added and updated at www.panasonic.com/global/consumer/lumix/s/s5.html and the official Instagram account @lumixwww.instagram.com/lumix/ ) on September 2, 2020.

  • What lenses do they expect someone who would buy a 1499$ L mount camera to use? As far as I knew there was no affordable glass in the system.

In my case, I only use vintage glass with an adapter. Since the autofocus is terrible on Panasonic, the S5 is actually an excellent cheap cine camera since most film makers don't use autofocus anyway.

So the S5 can maybe be a full frame G9 or a full frame G85. With vintage glass, it can possibly be an excellent cine camera but I will wait for the official announcement.

A GH6 with dual native ISO and a BSI sensor would be a better announcement, but since Panasonic is not taking any risks during the pandemic, we just have to accept new iterations of the same old tech. Which is ok with me if they are making it affordable.

  • Panasonic will announce the new S5 entry level Full Frame camera during the first week of September.

  • I guess this camera will replace the G9. In the m4/3 we will see only rf styled cameras (GX line) and specialized video oriented one, like next GH6, if it will debut ever...

  • So.... for what is this camera? I meant, if gh6 comes out, is this for selling all s1h, and s1 LSI and equipment that won’t be used?

  • Panasonic’s full-size mirrorless camera “LUMIX S5 Body” and “LUMIX S5 20-60mm lens kit” have just been registered at overseas retailers.

  • having a cheaper sensor at the same time the S1 price is dropping like a rock will not be something people will go for in terms of less dynamic range. Cell phones are at the lower end and this same problem killed most entry level DSLR's in the first place. They need to wake up.

  • @Firworks

They will have few cheap lenses, do not worry.

Relatively cheap ones, plus Sigma lenses coming.
