  • I imagine Nikon will make ProRes RAW free in the near future. Either following the release of Z8K or sooner if they are smart. I am curious to use RAW with the Z6 but have little true incentive as the 10 bit image with a Ninja V is just fine. Unrelated but rather than 2 posts, here's a little starlapse with the Z6 on a G2X. A bit boring without music and editing.. but will try to make something more legit after I get more footage..

  • STC FoGrip

    image

Global optics and photo/video accessories innovator, STC, has announced a brand-new folding grip solution, also known as the FoGrip, for the popular Nikon Z 6 and Z 7 mirrorless cameras. The latest in the range of ingenious grips from STC, the new FoGrip delivers greater stability and immediate benefit with weight distribution when using medium-to-large lenses for the dedicated Nikon Z-Series user community.

As STC continues to produce ground-breaking products for photographers and videographers across the globe, the latest product to emerge has been designed specifically for the loyal league of shooters working with the Nikon Z Series of mirrorless cameras. The new grip, which is compatible with Nikon Z 6 and Z 7 cameras, follows quickly from the recent revelation of other FoGrips, including the STC Fogrip for Sony and Olympus’ latest models.

After almost two years of development to ensure its performance, solid build and clever fold-away design, the new grip is certain to quickly become an indispensable partner for Nikon shooters everywhere. Perfect for the travelling photographer, the grip’s clever design and fold-away function enable the camera to sit completely flat when not in use and allows the user to comfortably shoot with just a single hand.

The whole unit has been constructed from extremely tough, yet light 6061 aerospace-level aluminium alloy, which adds just 78g to the camera when attached. Users can keep shooting by easily accessing the camera battery door without removing the grip. Furthermore, ultimate compatibility is assured with both quick-release plates and L-Brackets and the anodized frame, which can be purchased separately in Matt Black, Orange and Blue.

The Nikon Z-Series mirrorless cameras are notably smaller and lighter than their mighty DSLR counterparts. That said, even small camera bodies can start to feel heavy after shooting for hours on end, or when using large lenses. STC’s new Fogrip for the Nikon Z-Series addresses this issue by giving users 25% more grip when shooting handheld, making it easier to shoot for longer periods of time and added stability to support lens weight. Furthermore, the new Fogrip for Nikon Z-Series is compatible with quick-release plates and L-Brackets, allowing for easy transfer and use tripods, along with unobstructed, effortless access to the battery door without the need to remove the grip. STC has produced an optional adonized L-Bracket in Blue, as well as Standard Black and Orange colourways.

William Wu, CEO and Lead Design Engineer, STC, said: “This latest FoGrip solution demonstrates STC’s commitment to the FoGrip range and has been developed specifically for photographers and videographers shooting with the popular Nikon Z-Series mirrorless cameras. As the FoGrip is compatible with both the Nikon Z 6 and Z 7, we are certain that it will provide a useful and practical solution for those shooting for long periods and with heavier lenses. We see this model as a perfect example of a small-yet-powerful camera whose users will benefit from additional stabilisation when using the camera hand-held. We are very excited to see how this new and innovative product will be received by the Nikon community.”

STC filters and accessories are available from WEX Photo Video, Amazon.co.uk

  • Firmware 3.20

    • Support for RAW video output is available via a fee-for-service upgrade, * and firmware version 3.20 adds support under this service for Blackmagic Design external video recorders (currently the Video Assist 5" 12G HDR and Video Assist 7" 12G HDR). If you have already purchased the RAW video output upgrade for your camera, updating to firmware version 3.20 will add support for Blackmagic Design external video recorders automatically.
    • Users of Apple's Final Cut Pro X (version 10.4.9 or later) can now adjust ISO sensitivity---and display and adjust color temperature---for ProRes RAW footage output to ATOMOS NINJA V external recorders using the fee-for-service RAW video output upgrade. *
      • < Choosing a RAW Output Type >
      • Before filming RAW video, choose an option for HDMI > Advanced > RAW output options > RAW output type in the SETUP MENU based on the type of recorder connected: select Type A for NINJA V recorders and Type B for Video Assist recorders.
    • Added support for NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.2 S lenses.
    • Fixed the following issues:
      • Rotating the focus or (if Focus (M/A) is assigned to the control ring) control ring would sometimes fail to activate manual focus during burst photography when a NIKKOR Z lens was attached.
      • The exposure indicator would not be displayed in mode M when a non-CPU lens was attached via an FTZ mount adapter.
      • Certain aperture values would not be selected when control rings for the following lenses were rotated to stop aperture down in movie mode:
        • NIKKOR Z 24-50mm f/4-6.3
        • NIKKOR Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR
        • NIKKOR Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR
        • NIKKOR Z DX 50-250mm f/4.5-6.3 VR
    • Unexpected aperture values would sometimes be displayed during bracketing in mode M if a bracketing option that made changes to aperture was selected with a NIKKOR Z lens attached.
    • Power aperture controls would sometimes stop responding after the standby timer had been on for an extended period in movie mode.
    • The RAW video output upgrade is available on a fee-for-service basis. For more information, contact a Nikon-authorized service representative.
