Capitalism: Lead free soldering as way to make more waste
  • 40% of lead found in US landfills come from EEE. However, it is interesting to note the contribution made by individual components of used EEE in this percentage. US EPA commissioned study of municipal solid waste (MSW) to determine whether the leaching of lead from landfills presents a problem. This study found that 40.2% of lead in MSW comes from consumer electronic devices of which television picture accounts for 35.8% with the remaining 4.4% from other sources. According to this study majority of the lead (48.1%) in MSW comes from lead acid batteries.

So, they fought with 4.4% of lead from the start. :-)

Transition to lead free solders are responsible for around 90% of most expensive BGA soldering failures and for around 85% of all small components soldering failures. Expected life of products with such solders is much smaller compared to old solder containing lead.

And it is not boards and components manufacturers, but instead all leading corporations making end user products that stood behind this regulation. As they also look ahead and plan to the time of no to little progress where it is all going. Product life length becomes very important to all of them to keep their profits.

  • Seems more like stupid government writing stupid regulations rather than capitalism.

  • @pf49er

Did you read the post to the end?

Never ever in capitalism government can write something out of their head that damages any big business. If you see similar things, just look for the catch, may be it is even bigger or foreign business that is in charge :-).

  • Btw, remember who had been one of the founders -

AI Gore - author of "Lead Exposure Reduction Act". Yet due to big companies push it had been all delayed for around 10 years.

Same shit man who is pushing climate disaster narrative.

  • whatever the case, waste keeps increasing and resources keep getting used up. One day we'll run out of resources and will be left with nothing but unusable waste.

whatever the case, waste keeps increasing and resources keep getting used up. One day we'll run out of resources and will be left with nothing but unusable waste.

It will be exactly as you said if capitalism will hold enough time.

But one small issue is that due to resources upcoming shortages we'll see unprecedented fight that will have no rules and will use all the weapons available.

  • Talked recently to one guy who worked at GPUs production line for two famous brands.

He told that using proper old time paste with lead for BGA you can still get around 3x less dead cards in 2 year time, and up to 10x less dead card in 6 years time. Lead free solder joins do not like usual GPU load with constant peaks and coolings.

In other words - we have worldwide crime syndicate.
