US: Checking on students 24/7
  • Saint Louis University will put 2,300 Echo Dots in student residences.

The school has unveiled plans to provide all 2,300 student residences on campus (both dorms and apartments) with Echo Dots by the time classes begin in late August.

The university said it was the first such institution to put smart speakers in every residence.

Of course, it is juts "help the students", for sure. Not to have dedicated microphones working 24/7 and checking all that happens.

  • Damn, that's pretty fucked up. I wonder if there will be a penalty for turning it off...

If it'll be mass thing - of course. As it'll be viewed as damage of property. This guys invested to prevent and punish any resistance and unnecessary thought, not to tolerate them.

  • Well, I'm assuming they could just be unplugged... Hopefully.

  • Amazon is eager to get more bright minds working on voice technology, so it's expanding the Alexa Fellowship program to 14 more universities, including Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Texas A&M and Cambridge. The fellowships are financed through Amazon's $200 million Alexa Fund.

And they even plan on using students against themselves :-)
