At least the stop button is not right next to the record button, like on the Tascam 701. Despite the very competitive price, I would still buy a new Mixpre-3 or 6, just for the ergonomics.
Wonder why we have heard nothing more about the Marantz PMD-706?? As at that sub $300 price it could replace the Tascam DR70D as the default choice in this price bracket. (and at the moment either the DR70D or F4 is my default recommendation for anyone starting out! Both pack in a tonne of value)
Although without TC it can never compete with the next step up (Zoom F series or Sound Devices MixPre series).
Still listed as "pre-order" on B&H:
Says "End of October", but you always take those dates from B&H with a side order of a massive grain of salt! ha
I added it to NAB NY list, let's hope we get answers direct.
Do you know if they will have separate booth? Also NAB will coincide with audio exhibition.
B&H pre order page now says December :-/ Sucks, half wondering now if it might never ship.
Interesting, I was reading the manual and I see it has an option for encryption:
Encryption on/off: See Menu 7 – Rec Set for details on how to enter an encryption key. Note: If you try to play an encrypted file, you must enter the encryption key first.
I just got emailed a notification finally that this is in Stock at B&H:
This might maybe just perhaps replace the Tascam DR70D as the best recorder at this price point for film shoots, as they are both priced the same at a teeny bit under US$300.
Who is going to be brave an order one first? :-D (not me, I already have an F4! But I might start recommending this to people starting out, once I've seen some reviews)
If the trim pots are better than on the DR-70D (and like wise the DR-60Dmk2) which are basically not faders but digitally stepping the signal, than the Marantz could rule at this price point!
so has anyone tried this one out yet? just wondering....
@cindy6 gearslutz & taperssection are the the only forums I've seen extensive discussions about this from actual owners.
But since the price drop of the Zoom F4, I'd always be recommending the F4 for film use instead of the 706
1 review was posted on B&H, stating great feature set and 1 big glitch, if you lose power, even using the internal AA batteries, you lose your file. Not even a 0k file like other recorders, your recording is just gone. The reviewed states they confirmed this with Marantz and hopes a firmware update could fix it.
@CFreak The 70D has great preamps. Sure, it has several annoyances, but there are workarounds. But one thing these recorders should never, ever do it is crap out on writing your file if the power goes out. Because then you are the big loser, that's for sure.
@DrDave - Exactly, that's why I posted this. No one wants to be the big loser on a set.
@CFreak even my old pmd661 mk1, can close the file when powering down due out of batteries.
They have a mk2, dunno why you'd buy this over a mk1 (and probably stands no chance against the slightly more expensive Zoom F4):
from: https://www.thomann.de/gb/marantz_pmd_706_reviews.htm?sid=98acc0824c44e88f3e7008da10e92ea3 It seems the MK1 may have undeniable hardware issues. Hopefully the mk2 solves them... See the review below
