Odd large horizontal lines in some videos shot on GH2 (Moon T7)
  • I've started noticing this on some shots taken on my GH2 using the Moon T7 hack. I'm unsure if the lines are a result of the hack or not (I haven't tried it without it, and the issue appears to be inconsistent), but I was hoping someone here might have an idea and could shed some light on what may be happening.

Just looking at the video on its own, it's somewhat hard to tell. But if you're scrubbing through different shots, you can definitely see it. I made a gif comparing two identical shots, and you can clears see large dark yellow lines in the video: http://gifmaker.cc/PlayGIFAnimation.php?folder=20170119148rfTBjPEQ0fZEqE0dSjwXB&file=output_ZpFhpX.gif

Any ideas what could be causing this? I've seen this while shooting on 24p cinema as well as 720p@60fps at several different ISO and shutter speed values.

  • Just an update, I actually have two Gh2s (this one with Moon T8) and I was able to re-create the problem on this camera as well. Is this just a problem with the GH2 in general? https://giphy.com/gifs/HMiV6ucrTDV16

  • This is just the light frequency showing. You should have your shutter speed at 1/60 if you are in Canada or The USA due to 60hz electricity here, where I believe overseas is mostly 50hz?

  • exactly, you should use right shutter speed in places with artificial lights. US,CA = 1/60 or 1/120 and EU = 1/50 or 1/100. Any else shutter speed can result in that flickering.

  • @JOFO I was using 1/50 shutter speed in the last video / image because I was shooting at 24P. Is that not the correct rule of thumb?

What should I use when shooting at 60FPS?

  • 1/100 or 1/120 depends on region (50 Hz vs 60 Hz electricity).

  • Some fluo and especially Led-s can be 'off beat', I sometimes in PAL land sync at 1/40, 1/60, that is for available and uncontrolled light sources, of course...
