This camera fulfilled our expectations for a flagship APS-C DSLR camera and comes with most (if not all) the functions a serious enthusiast or professional photographer would require. In general, it's a worthwhile step up from the D300s it replaces and a welcome partner to the professional Nikon D5.

Movie recording is strong with the D500 too, as you can record in 4K resolution at 30 frames per second for up to 30 minutes continuously. Even pro level Nikon DSLRs don't always offer that type of video recording capability right now. You do have to work in Live View mode to shoot movies, which will cost you quite a bit of battery life.

If you are an enthusiast photographer looking for something which offers a heck of a lot of features, then the D500 is the ultimate camera for you. Professionals, who are usually swayed towards full-frame, could also find use for the D500 - especially sports and wildlife photographers who could make use of the crop sensor to get additional focal length.

New firmware - 1.02
Addressed an issue that sometimes caused errors with certain UHS-II SD memory cards. As we were able to confirm that these were read errors arising not in the camera but in the cards themselves, we addressed the issue with a work-around that switches temporarily to UHS-I mode when a card-side error occurs in UHS-II mode. The camera switches back to UHS-II mode when turned off and then on again or when the standby timer restarts. Card-side read errors may still occur after the update, albeit very infrequently.

D500 owner made legal warning against Nikon advertising the camera as offering 'integrated Wi-Fi.' In the equivalent of a cease-and-desist order. Andreas V, from Butzbach, Germany says, that the term is misleading, given there are unusual restrictions to using the function.
With D500 you need to use a compatible Android device with Bluetooth LE and the Snapbridge app to enable Wi-Fi: a restriction that is not commonly shared by other cameras, including Nikon's own D750 and D7200 models.
And he is right,
Sports and wildlife photographers will love the D500. The combination of a new 20 Megapixel APSC sensor, 10fps continuous shooting, a deep buffer (especially if you're using XQD cards), and a new 153-point AF system shared with the D5, makes for a supremely confident camera. Nikon enjoyed an edge over Canon in terms of continuous AF and the D500 further cements this belief. D500 effortlessly tracked any subject I pointed it at, rattling-off bursts of focused images with eerie precision and consistency. I also loved how the AF area extends almost to the very side edges of the DX frame, leaving only small strips at the top and bottom unattended. Coupled with a new metering sensor which has sufficient resolution to perform respectable face detection through the viewfinder, the D500 can track, focus and meter for subjects almost anywhere on the frame.
